 He is the primary exponent of the
impressionist movement and focal point for
other impressionist composers. He has more
than 227 musical compositions which includes
orchestral music, chamber music,piano music,
operas, ballets, songs and other vocal music.
MAURICE RAVEL(1875-1937)
Born in Ciboure,France
He entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of
14 where he studied with eminent French
composer Gabriel Faure
His compositional style is mainly characterized
by its uniquely innovative but not atonal style of
harmonic treatment.

Born in Vienna, Austria on September 13, 1874.
He taught himself Music Theory, but took lessons in
Counterpoint.
He was influenced by German Composer Richard
Wagner
He has approximately 213 musical compositions
which includes concerto, orchestral music, piano
music, operas, choral music, songs and other
instrumental music.
IGOR ISTRAVINSKY(1882-1971)
Born in Lomonosov, Russia on June 17, 1882.
He was influenced by his teacher Nikolai Rimsky-
Korzakov
His first successful masterpiece is “The Firebird
Suite”(1910)
His music is characterized by being contemporary,
structured, precise, controlled and full of artifice and
theatricality
He has more or less 127 musical compositions.

MUSIC COMPOSER
BELA BARTOK(1881-1945)
Born in Romania, Hungary on March 25, 1881.
He studied piano lessons with his mother and later
entered Budapest Royal Academy of Music in 1899.
He also performed as a concert pianist as he travelled
exploring the music of Hungarian peasants.
In 1906, with his fellow composer Zoltan Kodaly, he
published his first collection of 20 Hungarian folk songs.
Bartok has approximately 700 musical compositions.
NEO-CLASSICISM
SERGEI PROKOFIEFF(1891-1953)
Born in Ukraine in 1891
His style is uniquely recognizable for its progressive technique ,
pulsating rhythm , melodic directness and a resolving dissonance.
His early compositions were branded as avant-garde and were not
approved of by his elders.
With his contact with Stravinsky, he was given the chance to write
music for the BALLET and OPERA, notably the ballet ROMEO and
JULIET and the opera WAR and PEACE.
He was highly successful in his piano music compositions.
FRANCIS POULENC(1899-1963)
He was a successful composer for piano, voice and choral
music
His vocal works reveal his strength as a lyrical melodist.
His choral works tended to be more somber and solemn.
He has a more or less 185 compositions
He was a member of the group of young French
composers known as “Les Six
His composition had a coolly elegant modernity, tempered
by a classical sense of proportion.”

GEORGE GERSHWIN(1898-1937)
Born in New York
His older brother was his artistic collaborator who wrote the
lyrics of his songs.
His first song was written in 1916 and his first Broadway musical
, La La Lucille , in 1919.
He is a true “CROSSOVER ARTIST” in the sense that his serious
compositions remain highly popular in the classical repertoire,
as his stage and film songs continue to be jazz and vocal
standards
He was considered as “ FATHER of AMERICAN JAZZ”
He has a total 369 musical compositions
LEONARD BERNSTEIN
Born in Massachusetts, USA
A charismatic conductor , pianist, composer, and lecturer.
His philosophy was that the universal language of music
is basically rooted in tonality.
He achieved preeminence in conducting and composing
for Broadway musicals, dance shows, and concert music.
He has a more or less 90 compositions.
PHILIP GLASS(Born 1937)
Born in USA
He explored the territories of ballet, opera,
theater, film, and even television jingles.
He became an accomplished violinist and flutist
at the age of 15
His music often criticized as shallow , yet
startlingly effective for its hypnotic charm.
He has a total of 170 compositions.

KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN(born 1928)
Born in Cologne , Germany.
 His music was initially met with
resistance due to its heavily atonal
content with practically no clear
melodic or rhythm sense.

JOHN CAGE(1912-1992)
Born in Los Angeles, California USA on
September 5,1912 and become one of the
most original composers in the History of
Western MUSIC.
