Editor's Notes
ADD/ADHD is a debilitating disorder which impacts many aspects of an individuals life.In fact, 30-60-% continue to show significant symptoms into childhood
The wide-reaching effects of ADD/ADHD can lead to several difficulties.PHYSICAL & HEALTH PROBLEMS: Some of the physical and mental health problems include compulsive eating, substance abuse, anxiety, chronic stress and tension, and low self-esteem. Adults may also run into trouble due to neglecting important check-ups, skipping doctor appointments, ignoring medical instructions and forgetting to take vital medications.WORK AND FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES: adults often experience career difficulties and feel a strong sense of underachievement. They usually have trouble keeping a job, sticking to 9-to-5 routine. Managing finances is also a problem, they tend to unpaid bills, lose paperwork, pay late fees or have debts due to impulsive spending.RELATIONSHIP PROLBEMS:This chronic illness is can put a strain on love and family relationships. They may get fed up with constant nagging from loved ones to tidy up, listen more closely, or get organized. On the other hand, the close ones to the person with ADD/ADHD may feel hurt and resentful over the perceived “irresponsibility” or “insensitivity”Over all ADD/ADHD can lead to embarrassment, frustration, hopelessness and disappointment. They may feel like they’ll never be able to get their life under control.
There is no single test to diagnose ADHD, and many other problems, like anxiety, depression, and certain types of learning disabilities, can have similar symptoms. One step of the process involves having a medical exam, including hearing and vision tests, to rule out other problems with symptoms like ADHD. Another part of the process may include a checklist for rating ADHD symptoms and taking a history of the child from parents, teachers, and sometimes, the child.
Scientists are studying cause(s) and risk factors in an effort to find better ways to manage and reduce the chances of a person having ADHD. The cause(s) and risk factors for ADHD are unknown, but current research shows that genetics plays an important role. Recent studies of twins link genes with ADHD.
As children with ADD/ADHD get older, the way the disorder impacts upon them and their families changes. The adverse effects from the preschool years to primary school and adolescence, with varying aspects of the disorder being more prominent at different stages.ADHD may persist into adulthood causing disruptions to both professional and personal life.
