2. WHERE HE LIVED?
They lived in the late Cretaceous period, approximately 68
and 66 million years ago, in the Maastrichtian, in what is
now North America.
3. HOW BIG WAS IT?
The size of Triceratops individuals is estimated to be
between 7.8 to 9 meters long and 2.9 to 3 meters high.
Triceratops were herbivorous, sturdy and bulky, weighing
between 6.1 and 12 tons.
4. WHAT DID IT EAT?
The large size and number of a Triceratops' teeth
suggests that they ate large volumes of fibrous plant
material, so it has been suggested that palm trees and
cycas made up most of their diet, or ferns, that would
grow in grasslands.
5. DISCOVERY
The evolutionary origins of Triceratops were unknown for
many years after their discovery. In 1922, Henry Fairfield
Osborn portrayed the recently discovered Protoceratops
as his ancestor.
6. ON THEIR HORNS
It had a single, short, thick nasal horn located
above the nostrils, in addition to a pair of
horns approximately 1 meter in length.
They used it to:
As a defense against theropods.
As a means of communication between
members of his pack.
As a means of territorial dispute and mating.
