It is with great pleasure that I recommend Yang Song for the Ralph D. Mershon Study Abroad
Scholarship. In the past seven months, I have had the privilege of getting to know Yang in my
Introduction to International Business course. This course is a survey course and requires a lot of
integration of various topics, which can be challenging for students. However, Yang excelled in this
environment. Not only did he score highly on tests and assignments, he was without a doubt my most
enthusiastic student in class. He actively engaged in the class discussion and often talked to me
afterwards about international business concepts. Yang is exceptionally motivated when it comes to
international issues, and I believe it is this trait that will allow Yang to thrive in the exchange program.
Yang’s desire to go abroad is not just an opportunity for a vacation, but he truly views it as a chance to
learn and develop.
For Yang, the opportunity to develop his international capabilities is important to his overall career
objectives. Yang was inspired to pursue a career in international business by his father, who is an
accomplished international businessman. His first step in this process was coming to Ohio State. Since
coming here Yang has thrived academically and developmentally. Yang has assumed leadership
positions in campus organizations and recently interned at one of the key banks in China. In short, Yang
has seized opportunities since coming to the U.S., and now he believes that the next step is for him to
gain experience in other cultures outside of China and the U.S. I wholeheartedly agree and believe that
Yang is an excellent candidate for the scholarship. He will make wonderful use of the opportunities that
the exchange program provides, and the scholarship will help him make this experience a reality.
Warm Regards,
Dr. Matthew S. Rodgers
