Use Disk Cleanup in Windows
1-888-959-1458

Windows XP provides tools to help you free storage space on
your hard disks and to keep the disks running smoothly and
efficiently. Disk Cleanup determines which files on a hard drive
may no longer be needed and deletes those files, freeing up a
potentially significant amount of space.
Note: These steps are written for College Enterprise (EN)
Computers with Windows XP.
Disk Cleanup helps you remove unnecessary files from your
computer. These include temporary Internet files, unused
programs, and deleted files.
During Disk Cleanup your hard drives are scanned for files that
can safely be deleted, but you still have the option to keep or
delete these files. It also provides shortcuts to the Windows
Components and Remove Programs to remove features and
programs you don't use.
We recommend you use Disk Cleanup quarterly or every other
month.

How to use Disk Cleanup
1. Double click “MY Computer.

2. Right click local “C” drive and select “Properties”.

3. On the “General” tab select the “Disk Cleanup” button.

4. Select what files to delete. We recommend checking all
boxes.

5. The clean-up utility will run and when complete will clear from
screen

Note: Files that can be safely cleared include: Temporary Internet Files,
Offline Webpages, Recycle Bin, Temporary files, WebClient/Publisher
Temporary Files, Compress old files, and Catalog files for the Content
Indexer.
Note: If you decide to use Disk Cleanup to remove either Temporary
Offline Files or Offline Files in order to save disk space, be advised that
these files will return the next time your EN machine syncs with the server
in your office. So, IT recommends that you do not check either of these 2
choices in Disk Cleanup.
Note: Unlike the other choices, Compress Old Files doesn't delete files.
Instead, it compresses files that haven't been accessed for a specified
period of time. If you highlight Compress Old Files and click the Options
button, you will see the number of days to wait before an unaccessed
file is compressed. If you run Disk Cleanup quarterly, you can set this
to 90 days.
Note: Downloaded Program Files should not be removed using Disk
Cleanup. You should not need to click the View Files button in Disk
Cleanup.

•Bonus Tip: System Restore is a great feature, but restore points can
take up a lot of space as well.Disk Cleanup will allow you to remove
all but the most recent one.
1.Navigate to the Start -> Programs ->Accessories -> System
Tools program group and choose System Restore.
2.Choose the Restore my computer to an earlier time radio button and
then click Next >.
3.Choose an available date on the calendar on the left.
Note: Available dates are those when a restore point was created and
are shown in bold. You can not use System Restore to undo Windows XP
changes to a date that a restore point does not exist.
4.Choose a specific restore point on the right.
Note: All restore points created on the date you selected in Step 3 will
be listed here. This includes any restore points that you created,
scheduled restore points that Windows XP created, and those created
automatically during the installation of certain programs.
5.Click Next

6.Click Next > on the Confirm Restore Point Selection window to
begin the System Restore.
Note: Windows XP will shut down to complete the System Restore
so be sure to save any work you might have open in other
programs now.
Important: System Restore will not revert any of your non-system
files like documents, email, music, etc. to a previous state. These
types files are completely unaffected by System Restore. If your
intention with this tool was to recover a deleted non-system file,
try a file recovery program instead of System Restore.
7.System Restore will now restore Windows XP to the state that
was recorded in the restore point you chose in Step 4.
Note: The System Restore process could take several minutes.
Your computer will then reboot as n.ormal when complete

8. Immediately after logging in after the reboot, you should see
the Restoration Completewindow.
9. Click OK.
Windows XP will now continue to start.
10. Check to see if whatever Windows XP problem you were
troubleshooting has been corrected by this System Restore.
Note-If the problem still persists, you can repeat the steps above
and choose another restore point if one is available
