Psychology and Depression
"Men pray to the gods for health and they ignore that it is in their power to have it." –Democritus
Depression:
Depression is an illness, that strikes all ages, all races and all genders. It has no limit on how severe or how slight it will hit. Depression has been
with us for as long as people have been around. In biblical times, depression was there, being noted several times in the Old Testament as "manic
–depression." Hippocrates, a Greek physician, was the first man to write a medical description of the disease. He called it "melancholia", which means
"a mental disorder". Depression is also proven to be a family thing. Professor Myrna...show more content...
Dr. Verny, co
–author of "The Secret life of the Unborn Child", believes that mother to child bonding actually begins in the womb. Dr. Verny has a
theory that the embryo can in fact have emotional problems, that come from the mother. How can this be? Dr. Verny explains, since the mother and the
baby share everything, if the mother becomes depressed the baby can feel it. Since depression is a chemical off–balance in the head, the hormones that
are in the blood stream are effected too. The imbalance hormones, travel to the baby through the blood, and thus the baby receives the hormones.
Now the baby's hormones are imbalanced and the baby becomes depressed too. The baby can stay depressed in the womb, and even after its born.
That's why psychiatrists, are now treating infant depression. Environmental Depression: Depression does not result only from psychological, and
genetic matters. But in fact depression can also come from an environment. If a child's sibling is depressed, or a parent, the child becomes used to this
depressive life, and slowly becomes depressed too.
The child could be perfectly happy, but because he/she is continually surrounded by depression, it becomes a way of life for the child too.
Risks of Depression: Their are a lot of risks when dealing with depression. From eating disorders to

DEPRESSION IN WOMAN
Depression is the most common mood disorder; it is more than just temporary feelings of sadness. Then how come women are more prone to
depression than men? Depression affects women emotionally, physically, and mentally in every aspect of their lives. Clinical depression does not
only just cause suffering to individuals who are depressed, but it brings problems for their families and friends who seldom do not know how to help
them. Experts say depression is a disorder that is colour blind and affects women in spite of race, ethnic backgrounds, or socio–economic standing.
Women are said to be two to three times more prone than men to suffer from depression. Why is this the case? Is it because of the stress caused by

Depending on how old children are, they will be affected by their mother's depression in different ways. Women in a motherly role are likely to suffer
from a mood disorder because of the expectations as a mother, this can cause her to be more emotionally distressed.
Research indicates that women experiencing depression have imbalances in daily physical activities. Women are obliged to care for children and
aging parents in addition to work. She may become unable to perform such tasks because she is restrained to being in bed and therefore cannot
participate in her usual functions. She starts to deteriorate physically, for example lose of weight and have low energy. Member around her or living
with her may start to experience role changes. For example her husband may be unable to handle the situation and may become an alcoholic or
abusive towards her, or the children. As a result, their children may start to engage in gang activities or violence as a way of dealing with the situation
and lack of socialization. These distressing events will cause corruption and problems to here family's unity. Therefore, the physical family structure
slowly starts to segregate from each other.
Another example of depression affecting a women physically is during pregnancy. Awomen with depression tend to have receive less prenatal care, do
not eat as well, and do not get enough rest. They are at risk of having a miscarriage,

Depression has been around for a longer period of time than we can imagine. Depression has been considered to be the major psychiatric disease of the
20th century, affecting approximately eight million people in North America (http://www.ndmda.org). It is a matter of whether it is diagnosed and
treated or left alone. This is a problem that can affect everyone whether they themselves are diagnosed or simply by knowing someone with depression.
People with psychiatric illnesses are twenty times more likely to die from accidents or suicide than people without psychiatric disorders (http:/

I chose this topic because it occurs much too often. I witness it myself. Of my friends, whom I still have from high school, three of them were
diagnosed. I did not find it odd that they all came from unstable families. I definitely think that this factor may influence depression because I know
for a fact that they feel abandoned by one or both parents. It is horrible to think, but depression is a popular problem. Another reason as to why I
chose this topic is because as often as it occurs, it needs more attention. Teachers, parents, family, and friends need to be aware of the warning signs
so that the problem can be dealt with before it progresses. I chose East Stroudsburg high school South because it was easier for me if I did it in East
Stroudsburg rather than driving home to Lancaster. Although, I was interested in seeing the school program and the facility itself because my high
school was all I?d ever known. Sometimes I guess I thought other high schools would be like mine. It is strange; it is odd to think that I took my high
school for granted.
I went about finding a person in the school by simply making a telephone call. I spoke to one of the secretaries of the guidance office and set up an
appointment with Mrs. Keglovits for Wednesday, November 28th at 8:30AM.
The woman I interviewed was Linda Keglovits.

Depression : A Psychological Mood Disorder Essay
Depression is a psychological mood disorder that is common in today's world. The effect of depression affects the person's ability to control their
feelings and thoughts, resulting in their activities of daily living being negatively affected. For a person to be diagnosed with depression they must
have had the symptoms present for 2 continuous weeks at minimum (Nimh.nih.gov, 2015). Correspondingly, depression in females and the symptoms
thereof are different to that of men. From social pressures to pregnancy hormones females have varying factors that alter their depressive experience
from the male sex often making depression more difficult to treat ("Depression in Women: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, and Self–Help", 2016).
Due to the unique encounter of depression in females it makes postnatal depression that much more complex. Postnatal depression's occurrence rate, of
non–psychotic postpartum depression, based on the results of many studies carried out is, 13%. The main reasons of postnatal depression were, past
history of psychopathology and psychological disturbance during pregnancy, poor marital relationship and low social support, and stressful life events.
Also, it is shown that patients of a low economic status are more likely to be diagnosed with postnatal depression (O 'hara & Swain, 1996).
"When you study postpartum depression, there is a very clear understanding that in communities where you see more support, there is less depression,"

Depression
The complex topic of depression can be looked at from various perspectives. Two such perspectives are the biological view and the psychological view.
The main focus of this paper will be from the biological side.
The symptoms of mental illness creep over you like a cold damp fog. The number of people at probable risk of depression is climbing, up from 5.2
percent in 1994/95 to 7.1 percent in 2000/01 (Hawaleshka, 38). One particular subject, Sarah Hamid started feeling the symptoms of depression at age
18. Sarah got to the point where she was sleeping 12–16 hours a day and crying uncontrollably. "It got to the point where I was driving home one day
and I really wanted to drive the car over the yellow line into oncoming...show more content...
It is thought that because of the lack of chemicals, too few messages get transmitted between neurons and depressive symptoms occur (Nestler, 1).
New technology allows researchers to take pictures of the brain that show activity levels in the brain. These imagining techniques, such as functional
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (f–MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), scan the brain. The scans create images which show the amount of
activity in different parts of the brain. Some studies with these kinds of techniques have suggested that the patterns of activation in the brains of
depressed people are different than those who are not. These tests can help doctors and researchers lean more about depression and other mental
illnesses (Nestler, 2).
Failure to recognize and treat depressive disorder leaves the patient to suffer and to become a costly user of health care services. Depression that is
not treated significantly increases the risk of mortality. Depressive disorders can also be linked to patients with Parkinson's disease, Dementia, or
Alzheimer's disease. Treatment of the depressive disorder may enable the patient to achieve better functioning in activities, daily living; possibly to a
degree that placement in a nursing facility may be delayed or avoided (McCahill, 1).
Sarah Hamid got lucky in her case, because she knew she needed assistance with depression and seeked help for it. Her doctor

Depression and Mental Health Essay
Depression is a medical, mental disorder that causes a constant feeling of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness. Depression affects how the person
feels, behaves, and thinks. It also leads to emotional and physical problems. People with depression find it hard to go about their day–to–day activities.
As human beings, many of us have encountered tough times in our lives, which caused us to feel "depressed". While those feeling are short lived,
people with depression will have feelings that are long lived; they will constantly re–embark on past negative situations and their feelings at that time.
When people are severely depressed, they become a different person and their whole attitude on life changes dramatically. It's a common but serious

Depression is a very important topic in psychology because there have been many negative outcomes because of it. "Each year, depression affects 5–8
percent of adults in the United States. This means that about 25 million Americans will have an episode of major depression this year alone.
Depression occurs 70 percent more frequently in women than in men for reasons that are not fully understood. Without treatment, the frequency and
severity of these symptoms tend to increase over time" (Depression). If left untreated, depression can escalate and lead to serious interruptions in a
person's daily functioning. It is a statistical fact that every forty seconds, someone commits suicide.
Over the years, the stigma of depression has somewhat decreases but, is still a greatly induced issue. Because mental illness has a lot of stigmas on
depression and other disorders, there is a huge issue on people getting the help that they need. In the olden days, the term depression was never really
used. People didn't really understand what it was all about and continued there every day lives in a negative mental state. Now that people are coming

Review of Literature: Why Has Depression Increased Among Adolescents? In today's world, depression continues to be a pressing issue throughout
society. The word depression is defined as "feelings of severe despondency and dejection". As it is common to feel pangs of sadness or experience a
bad day, people suffering fromdepression go through these feelings constantly and much more harshly. Adolescents especially have become more
prone to problems concerning mental health. Deciphering the difference between actual depression and feeling down continues to be a challenge to
mental health services. Signs of depression in adolescents can be interpreted in two ways. As a more common sign, being perpetual sleep and lack of
appetite, this way concerns the lower self–esteemed teen. Shown by continually feeling incompetent compared to everyone else, hatred for oneself,
whether it may be appearance or personality wise, and perceiving oneself as extremely sorrowful is the stereotypical type of depression noticed more
frequently.
The other type is the rebellious behaviored adolescent. The signs for this type can be harder to detect based on substance abuse, attitude, and
surprisingly enough, overconfidence. It is unexpected to conclude that a teen with these traits is actually depressed, but what has to be focused on is
how quickly they altered. The increase of teenagers with depression has rapidly escalated and continues to do so as years go on. It has been found that
one of every eight children in the United States is diagnosed with a mental health issue. A major warning that applies to teenagers mainly incorporates
being female and having hereditary traits of depression. This could also be a repercussion of ongoing situations happening with the teen, leaving them
confused and/or devastated.
The effects of not screening children for depression can have a negative outcome in life later on. 50% of teens with major depression go unnoticed
because their parents/guardians did not screen them for mental disorders. This in itself is an onset issue. Continuing to go undiagnosed for depression
can then induce much more confusion and unusual behavior in an adolescent. The help that could be received is not presented to

Depression Depression strikes millions of Canadians, estimating a range from zero to twenty–five percent of the population and is becoming the most
common illness in teens, varying from fourteen to twenty–four years of age. The risk of a depressed teenager committing suicide is fifty times higher
then of a person who is not depressed. Depression is more than the blues; it is a medical illness, which is as common as it is misunderstood. Society
may be afraid or ashamed to seek help or even to discuss about how they feel. Fortunately, depression is a highly treatable illness, that is not a sign of

"These individuals will most commonly have symptoms, which start off gradually, but in others cases; the person's symptoms may appear
suddenly. Furthermore, warning signs that should not be disregarded are any of the following, which has been proceeding for more then a duration

(including sex), change in weight and sleep patterns, difficulties concentrating and remembering or making decisions, decreased energy, fatigue and
feeling "slowed down", and chronic aches and pains that do not respond to treatment. In my opinion, if depression is not treated, it can last many
months or years, wreak havoc with your life and can potentially lead to suicide. When dealing with depression, no one knows exactly what causes
this illness, but there are a number of variables, either alone or in combination, that can lead to depression. Chemical imbalances are known for
causing depression. "This is due to deficiencies in at least two brain chemicals, Serotonin and Norepinephrine, which are associated with depression"
(Canadian Mental Health) Even though each case is complex, there appear to be common situations that act as triggers for the event. I have first hand

Clinical depression is one of many mental disorders affecting 1 in 10 Americans today. This disorder is characterized by ongoing feelings of sadness
and despair which leads to anxiety, agitation, feelings of emptiness, and loss of self–worth. Following these initial symptoms are possible weight loss
or gain, insomnia, lack of energy, unusualindecisiveness, and even suicidal thoughts or attempts. There are many possible causes of major
depression; however, very often the disease strikes without any triggering cause which leads to a great deal of frustration by the affected person and
his or her loved ones. Fortunately, scientists have narrowed the list to three major causes: a first depressive episode caused by a traumatic event, a

The same chemical alteration that can result from first depressive episode, can also be the result of a naturally occurring biochemical disorder. It now
appears that depression can be caused by decreased levels of serotonin and norepinephrine. These are neurotransmitters found in the brain that are
responsible for triggering the events that allow a person to feel motivation, capability, and the drive to live everyday life. The depressive brain
chemistry alteration seems to be self–limiting in most cases: after one to three years, a more normal chemistry may reappear, even without medical
treatment. However, if the alteration is profound enough to cause suicidal impulses, a majority of untreated depressed people will attempt suicide, and
as many as 17% will succeed. Therefore, depression must be thought of as a potentially fatal illness.
There is also scientific evidence that depression is an inherited disorder. A recent article published in the Health Section of USA Today claims that a
study is giving scientists encouragement that they are on the trail of a manic depression gene. The gene might increase vulnerability to the disease
only if inherited from the father. The researchers traced the inheritance of a series of markers on chromosome 18, which was identified in a 1994
study as a possible location of the

The Causes and Effects of Depression Essay
The Causes and Effects of Depression Depression has numerous causes and effects which affect not only the person but the people around them.
Depression doesn't have a specific cause; in most cases it's different for everyone. It is a common, treatable mental illness that can be experienced at
any time in life. It is often described with feeling sad, unhappy, miserable, or "down in the dumps". Most people have these feelings on occasion.
There are several types of depression. These different types of depression describe slight, but often important, diagnostic differences. True clinical

Family and friends become worried about this person. They don't understand why this person may be depressed or know how to help. So in turn
both the person and their loved ones feel helpless. People that have strong social support and loved ones to lean on tend to recover faster than people
that isolate themselves or have no one. Depression is a serious mental illness that can be treated. Knowing the type of depression is important. A
person may find the treatment that best suits them with the trial and error process. The severity of the depression means a more intensive treatment.
Most people choose to take antidepressants rather than actually getting help with their problem. They shouldn't rely on the medication alone; if they
do it can bring unwanted side effects. All of the depression treatments take time, and sometimes it might feel overwhelming or frustratingly slow.
That is normal. Recovery usually has its ups and downs. Depression has numerous causes and effects. The exact cause of depression is unknown.
Depression can be genetic, triggered by stressful events, or both. A person with depression will avoid friends and social gatherings and begin to
isolate themselves. They might even start to get into trouble or do bad things. Depression can lead to many addictions such as alcohol or drug abuse.
If it leads to something like that, then the severity of the depression can become worse. The loved

Argumentative Essay On Depression
"Depression is the inability to construct a future." When a person is struggling through a dark time in their life they are unable to look positively
towards the future. This may affect anyone close to them and anyone who is planning a future with them. The theme is evident by the history of
depression, the signs, symptoms and the treatments available and the struggles depression creates in the individual's daily life. The earliest
discovery of Depression came in the second millennium B.C. They first called this illness melancholia and it first appeared in the writings of
Mesopotamian. Depression in this time was that people were possessed with demons and a priest had to attend to them to try and rid of the
demons causing this illness. They believed depression was a spiritual illness not a physical one. Many different doctors had ways they treated
people with this mental illness. Roman and Greek doctors believed this was a psychological and a biological illness. They treated depression with
gymnastics, massage, special diets, music and baths one kind of bath was a mix of poppy extract and donkeys milk to alleviate symptoms. The
Greek physicians were called Hippocrates and they said that if you had melancholia you had to much black bile in your spleen. They used
bloodletting which removed blood from the body, bathing, exercise, and dieting to treat melancholia. As the years went on people believed that the
mental illness was inherited and the people with these mental illnesses ended up homeless or in an institute. The theories that were established from
the past were very helpful to study which treatments would work best for people today. Depression is a complex disorder which involves many
systems of the body. It disrupts sleep, changes your appetite and causes weight loss or weight gain. Everyone experiences a sad time in their lives
and has no positive outlook at the future. This does not portray personal weakness but it also can not be something that can be wished away. Studies
have shown that the best way for people with depression to get help is cognitive behavioral therapy which studies problematic thought patterns without
the use of medicine. Depression occurs more in women than in men because of

adults suffer from depression episodes before the age of 24. Also, women are two times as likely to suffer from depression than men. In addition,
more than 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression. Phill Hickey makes a claim that "Depression Is Not An Illness: It is an Adaptive
Mechanism" in his article and I beg to differ. In this paper, I plan to explain why I disagree with Hickey; and define depression/mental illness.

In my own personal experiences, these delusions are true occurrences when dealing with manic depression. My uncle suffers from manic depression

The primary drug used when dealing with depression is Lithium. "Lithium is generally used only as an augmenting agent in patients who have not had

Many symptoms and signs of toxicity are closely correlated with plasma lithium concentrations (Price 1994). The Food and Drug Association (FDA)

Major life stressors, chronic illness, medications, and relationship or work problems may cause Dysthymia. Now that you know a little bit more about
Dysthymia, you are probably wondering, what are some of the symptoms? Some of the symptoms of Dysthymia are: sadness or depressed mood most
of the day or almost everyday, loss of enjoyment of things that were once pleasurable, major change in weight ( weight loss or gaining weight),
insomnia or excessive sleep throughout the day, Fatigue, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness or guilt almost everyday, thoughts about death or
suicide. Now that you know some of the symptoms of Dysthymia, you might wonder, How are you diagnosed with it? A mental health specialist or a
psychologist, generally makes the diagnosis based on the symptoms of the person. There is no blood, x–ray, or any other lab test that can find out if
you have Dysthymia. Now that that's clear, the final question is... Is it curable!? Although Dysthymia is a severe illness; it is also very treatable. As
with any chronic illnesses, early diagnosis and medical treatment may reduce the intensity and duration of symptoms, and also reduce the likelihood
of it developing into major depression. To treat Dysthymia doctors may use psychotherapy, more commonly known as, seeing a therapist, along
with taking antidepressants. Dysthymia can be treated by a primary care physician. Now, last but not least is "Genetic Depression". It has been

In teenagers these symptoms are common; but other signs such as a drop in school grades, loss of appetite or over eating, sleep disturbance ( e.g.

crisis occurs in the teenager's life around the time just before the suicide that may affect them greatly, though other people may not think it a great
problem. This can range from girlfriend/boyfriend problems to family conflict to other things. Depression is rife at this stage and if not treated, then is
very dangerous.

Psychology And Depression Essay

  • 1. Psychology and Depression Essay Psychology and Depression "Men pray to the gods for health and they ignore that it is in their power to have it." –Democritus Depression: Depression is an illness, that strikes all ages, all races and all genders. It has no limit on how severe or how slight it will hit. Depression has been with us for as long as people have been around. In biblical times, depression was there, being noted several times in the Old Testament as "manic –depression." Hippocrates, a Greek physician, was the first man to write a medical description of the disease. He called it "melancholia", which means "a mental disorder". Depression is also proven to be a family thing. Professor Myrna...show more content... Dr. Verny, co –author of "The Secret life of the Unborn Child", believes that mother to child bonding actually begins in the womb. Dr. Verny has a theory that the embryo can in fact have emotional problems, that come from the mother. How can this be? Dr. Verny explains, since the mother and the baby share everything, if the mother becomes depressed the baby can feel it. Since depression is a chemical off–balance in the head, the hormones that are in the blood stream are effected too. Environmental Depression: Depression does not result only from psychological, and genetic matters. But in fact depression can also come from an environment. If a child's sibling is depressed, or a parent, the child becomes used to this depressive life, and slowly becomes depressed too. The child could be perfectly happy, but because he/she is continually surrounded by depression, it becomes a way of life for the child too. Risks of Depression: Their are a lot of risks when dealing with depression. From eating disorders to suicide, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Depression affects women emotionally, physically, and mentally in every aspect of their lives. Clinical depression does not only just cause suffering to individuals who are depressed, but it brings problems for their families and friends who seldom do not know how to help them. Experts say depression is a disorder that is colour blind and affects women in spite of race, ethnic backgrounds, or socio–economic standing. Women are said to be two to three times more prone than men to suffer from depression. Why is this the case? Is it because of the stress caused by ...show more content... Depending on how old children are, they will be affected by their mother's depression in different ways. Women in a motherly role are likely to suffer from a mood disorder because of the expectations as a mother, this can cause her to be more emotionally distressed. Research indicates that women experiencing depression have imbalances in daily physical activities. Women are obliged to care for children and aging parents in addition to work. She may become unable to perform such tasks because she is restrained to being in bed and therefore cannot participate in her usual functions. She starts to deteriorate physically, for example lose of weight and have low energy. Member around her or living with her may start to experience role changes. For example her husband may be unable to handle the situation and may become an alcoholic or abusive towards her, or the children. As a result, their children may start to engage in gang activities or violence as a way of dealing with the situation and lack of socialization. These distressing events will cause corruption and problems to here family's unity. Therefore, the physical family structure slowly starts to segregate from each other. • 4. depression Essay Depression has been around for a longer period of time than we can imagine. Depression has been considered to be the major psychiatric disease of the 20th century, affecting approximately eight million people in North America (http://www.ndmda.org). It is a matter of whether it is diagnosed and treated or left alone. This is a problem that can affect everyone whether they themselves are diagnosed or simply by knowing someone with depression. People with psychiatric illnesses are twenty times more likely to die from accidents or suicide than people without psychiatric disorders (http:/ /www.nami.org). Of my friends, whom I still have from high school, three of them were diagnosed. I did not find it odd that they all came from unstable families. I definitely think that this factor may influence depression because I know for a fact that they feel abandoned by one or both parents. It is horrible to think, but depression is a popular problem. Another reason as to why I chose this topic is because as often as it occurs, it needs more attention. Teachers, parents, family, and friends need to be aware of the warning signs so that the problem can be dealt with before it progresses. I chose East Stroudsburg high school South because it was easier for me if I did it in East Stroudsburg rather than driving home to Lancaster. Although, I was interested in seeing the school program and the facility itself because my high school was all I?d ever known. Sometimes I guess I thought other high schools would be like mine. It is strange; it is odd to think that I took my high school for granted. I went about finding a person in the school by simply making a telephone call. I spoke to one of the secretaries of the guidance office and set up an appointment with Mrs. Keglovits for Wednesday, November 28th at 8:30AM. The woman I interviewed was Linda Keglovits. • 5. Depression : A Psychological Mood Disorder Essay Depression is a psychological mood disorder that is common in today's world. The effect of depression affects the person's ability to control their feelings and thoughts, resulting in their activities of daily living being negatively affected. For a person to be diagnosed with depression they must have had the symptoms present for 2 continuous weeks at minimum (Nimh.nih.gov, 2015). Correspondingly, depression in females and the symptoms thereof are different to that of men. From social pressures to pregnancy hormones females have varying factors that alter their depressive experience from the male sex often making depression more difficult to treat ("Depression in Women: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, and Self–Help", 2016). Due to the unique encounter of depression in females it makes postnatal depression that much more complex. Postnatal depression's occurrence rate, of non–psychotic postpartum depression, based on the results of many studies carried out is, 13%. The main reasons of postnatal depression were, past history of psychopathology and psychological disturbance during pregnancy, poor marital relationship and low social support, and stressful life events. Also, it is shown that patients of a low economic status are more likely to be diagnosed with postnatal depression (O 'hara & Swain, 1996). • 6. Essay on Depression Depression The complex topic of depression can be looked at from various perspectives. Two such perspectives are the biological view and the psychological view. The main focus of this paper will be from the biological side. The symptoms of mental illness creep over you like a cold damp fog. The number of people at probable risk of depression is climbing, up from 5.2 percent in 1994/95 to 7.1 percent in 2000/01 (Hawaleshka, 38). One particular subject, Sarah Hamid started feeling the symptoms of depression at age 18. Sarah got to the point where she was sleeping 12–16 hours a day and crying uncontrollably. It is thought that because of the lack of chemicals, too few messages get transmitted between neurons and depressive symptoms occur (Nestler, 1). New technology allows researchers to take pictures of the brain that show activity levels in the brain. These imagining techniques, such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (f–MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), scan the brain. The scans create images which show the amount of activity in different parts of the brain. Some studies with these kinds of techniques have suggested that the patterns of activation in the brains of depressed people are different than those who are not. These tests can help doctors and researchers lean more about depression and other mental illnesses (Nestler, 2). Failure to recognize and treat depressive disorder leaves the patient to suffer and to become a costly user of health care services. Depression that is not treated significantly increases the risk of mortality. Depressive disorders can also be linked to patients with Parkinson's disease, Dementia, or Alzheimer's disease. Treatment of the depressive disorder may enable the patient to achieve better functioning in activities, daily living; possibly to a degree that placement in a nursing facility may be delayed or avoided (McCahill, 1). Sarah Hamid got lucky in her case, because she knew she needed assistance with depression and seeked help for it. Her doctor

Depression affects how the person feels, behaves, and thinks. It also leads to emotional and physical problems. People with depression find it hard to go about their day–to–day activities. As human beings, many of us have encountered tough times in our lives, which caused us to feel "depressed". While those feeling are short lived, people with depression will have feelings that are long lived; they will constantly re–embark on past negative situations and their feelings at that time. When people are severely depressed, they become a different person and their whole attitude on life changes dramatically. It's a common but serious ...show more content... Depression is a very important topic in psychology because there have been many negative outcomes because of it. "Each year, depression affects 5–8 percent of adults in the United States. This means that about 25 million Americans will have an episode of major depression this year alone. Depression occurs 70 percent more frequently in women than in men for reasons that are not fully understood. Without treatment, the frequency and severity of these symptoms tend to increase over time" (Depression). If left untreated, depression can escalate and lead to serious interruptions in a person's daily functioning. It is a statistical fact that every forty seconds, someone commits suicide. Over the years, the stigma of depression has somewhat decreases but, is still a greatly induced issue. Because mental illness has a lot of stigmas on depression and other disorders, there is a huge issue on people getting the help that they need. In the olden days, the term depression was never really used. People didn't really understand what it was all about and continued there every day lives in a negative mental state. • 9. Depression And Depression Essay Review of Literature: Why Has Depression Increased Among Adolescents? In today's world, depression continues to be a pressing issue throughout society. The word depression is defined as "feelings of severe despondency and dejection". As it is common to feel pangs of sadness or experience a bad day, people suffering fromdepression go through these feelings constantly and much more harshly. Adolescents especially have become more prone to problems concerning mental health. Deciphering the difference between actual depression and feeling down continues to be a challenge to mental health services. Signs of depression in adolescents can be interpreted in two ways. As a more common sign, being perpetual sleep and lack of appetite, this way concerns the lower self–esteemed teen. Shown by continually feeling incompetent compared to everyone else, hatred for oneself, whether it may be appearance or personality wise, and perceiving oneself as extremely sorrowful is the stereotypical type of depression noticed more frequently. The other type is the rebellious behaviored adolescent. The signs for this type can be harder to detect based on substance abuse, attitude, and surprisingly enough, overconfidence. It is unexpected to conclude that a teen with these traits is actually depressed, but what has to be focused on is how quickly they altered. The increase of teenagers with depression has rapidly escalated and continues to do so as years go on. It has been found that one of every eight children in the United States is diagnosed with a mental health issue. A major warning that applies to teenagers mainly incorporates being female and having hereditary traits of depression. This could also be a repercussion of ongoing situations happening with the teen, leaving them confused and/or devastated. The effects of not screening children for depression can have a negative outcome in life later on. 50% of teens with major depression go unnoticed because their parents/guardians did not screen them for mental disorders. This in itself is an onset issue. Continuing to go undiagnosed for depression can then induce much more confusion and unusual behavior in an adolescent. The help that could be received is not presented to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Depression Essay Depression Depression strikes millions of Canadians, estimating a range from zero to twenty–five percent of the population and is becoming the most common illness in teens, varying from fourteen to twenty–four years of age. The risk of a depressed teenager committing suicide is fifty times higher then of a person who is not depressed. Depression is more than the blues; it is a medical illness, which is as common as it is misunderstood. Society may be afraid or ashamed to seek help or even to discuss about how they feel. Fortunately, depression is a highly treatable illness, that is not a sign of personal failure. When people dismiss seeking professional help for this illness, they suffer greatly in the long run and may be at risk of...show more content... "These individuals will most commonly have symptoms, which start off gradually, but in others cases; the person's symptoms may appear suddenly. The person shows signs of, persistent emptiness or excessive irritability, loss of pleasure in ordinary activities (including sex), change in weight and sleep patterns, difficulties concentrating and remembering or making decisions, decreased energy, fatigue and feeling "slowed down", and chronic aches and pains that do not respond to treatment. In my opinion, if depression is not treated, it can last many months or years, wreak havoc with your life and can potentially lead to suicide. When dealing with depression, no one knows exactly what causes this illness, but there are a number of variables, either alone or in combination, that can lead to depression. Chemical imbalances are known for causing depression. "This is due to deficiencies in at least two brain chemicals, Serotonin and Norepinephrine, which are associated with depression" (Canadian Mental Health) Even though each case is complex, there appear to be common situations that act as triggers for the event. I have first hand knowledge on the subject, because I worked with adolescents, who are diagnosed with depressions. • 11. Depression Essay Clinical depression is one of many mental disorders affecting 1 in 10 Americans today. This disorder is characterized by ongoing feelings of sadness and despair which leads to anxiety, agitation, feelings of emptiness, and loss of self–worth. Following these initial symptoms are possible weight loss or gain, insomnia, lack of energy, unusualindecisiveness, and even suicidal thoughts or attempts. There are many possible causes of major depression; however, very often the disease strikes without any triggering cause which leads to a great deal of frustration by the affected person and his or her loved ones. Fortunately, scientists have narrowed the list to three major causes: a first depressive episode caused by a traumatic event, a ...show more content... The same chemical alteration that can result from first depressive episode, can also be the result of a naturally occurring biochemical disorder. It now appears that depression can be caused by decreased levels of serotonin and norepinephrine. These are neurotransmitters found in the brain that are responsible for triggering the events that allow a person to feel motivation, capability, and the drive to live everyday life. The depressive brain chemistry alteration seems to be self–limiting in most cases: after one to three years, a more normal chemistry may reappear, even without medical treatment. However, if the alteration is profound enough to cause suicidal impulses, a majority of untreated depressed people will attempt suicide, and as many as 17% will succeed. Therefore, depression must be thought of as a potentially fatal illness. There is also scientific evidence that depression is an inherited disorder. A recent article published in the Health Section of USA Today claims that a study is giving scientists encouragement that they are on the trail of a manic depression gene. The gene might increase vulnerability to the disease only if inherited from the father. The researchers traced the inheritance of a series of markers on chromosome 18, which was identified in a 1994 study as a possible location of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 13. Argumentative Essay On Depression "Depression is the inability to construct a future." When a person is struggling through a dark time in their life they are unable to look positively towards the future. This may affect anyone close to them and anyone who is planning a future with them. The theme is evident by the history of depression, the signs, symptoms and the treatments available and the struggles depression creates in the individual's daily life. The earliest discovery of Depression came in the second millennium B.C. They first called this illness melancholia and it first appeared in the writings of Mesopotamian. Depression in this time was that people were possessed with demons and a priest had to attend to them to try and rid of the demons causing this illness. They believed depression was a spiritual illness not a physical one. Many different doctors had ways they treated people with this mental illness. Roman and Greek doctors believed this was a psychological and a biological illness. They treated depression with gymnastics, massage, special diets, music and baths one kind of bath was a mix of poppy extract and donkeys milk to alleviate symptoms. The Greek physicians were called Hippocrates and they said that if you had melancholia you had to much black bile in your spleen. They used bloodletting which removed blood from the body, bathing, exercise, and dieting to treat melancholia. As the years went on people believed that the mental illness was inherited and the people with these mental illnesses ended up homeless or in an institute. The theories that were established from the past were very helpful to study which treatments would work best for people today. Depression is a complex disorder which involves many systems of the body. It disrupts sleep, changes your appetite and causes weight loss or weight gain. Everyone experiences a sad time in their lives and has no positive outlook at the future. This does not portray personal weakness but it also can not be something that can be wished away. Studies have shown that the best way for people with depression to get help is cognitive behavioral therapy which studies problematic thought patterns without the use of medicine. Also, women are two times as likely to suffer from depression than men. In addition, more than 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression. Phill Hickey makes a claim that "Depression Is Not An Illness: It is an Adaptive Mechanism" in his article and I beg to differ. In this paper, I plan to explain why I disagree with Hickey; and define depression/mental illness. According to NAMI Mental Illness is a condition that impacts a person's thinking, feelings, and moods. Mental Illness can also affect the way you function each and every day. There are many different mental disorders such as Alcohol Abuse, Claustrophobia, Depressive, Panic disorder, and Manic disorder. In addition, NAMI states that Get more content on HelpWriting.net

"Lithium is generally used only as an augmenting agent in patients who have not had a response to antidepressant drugs alone (Price 1994). Most patients receiving lithium have side effects, reflecting the drug's narrow therapeutic index. Many symptoms and signs of toxicity are closely correlated with plasma lithium concentrations (Price 1994). The Food and Drug Association (FDA) banned lithium in response to the deaths of several patients in 1949 (Price 1994).
