Always Running Chapter 1 Analysis
People go through different changes in their life. People can be shy and then confident or some could be lazy and then hardworking. In the story
Always Running the main character Grillo goes through many stages in his life, from maturing, to being violent, and then wanting better for
himself. In the beginning of the novel Grillo is shy, weak, and illustrates low confidence however in chapter 2 Grillo begins to change by building
up his confidence and matured side. In this chapter Grillo defends his brother by standing up to a couple of bullies who were trash talking his older
brother. When his older brother Rano asked him why he stood up to them, Grillo replied with "I did it because I love you"(pg. 51). This quote from
the novel shows how Grillo starts changing from being the protected to protector. Another change we start to see in Grillo's character is his violent side.

Being a member of Lomas at his age means having to be involved in many hits and missions to earn his respect from the gang. What we read in
Chapter 5 is a time in Grillo's life where him and other members of Lomas go do a hit on a Sangras members house. Their ideal tactic was to throw
molotovs into the house of a Sangras members house and set it to flames. In chapter he tells himself, "It became a habit for me to take the trench coat
whenever I did a job like this"(pg. 118). The quote means he's always wearing that same trench coat whenever he is involved in some gang mission

Shouldn't fiction be part of students' curriculum in their academics? School board across the states no longer has a place for fiction in school
curriculum. From the beginning of time, many of native storytellers carry morals through generations of passing down customs, history and heritage.
Such as Always Running by Luis Rodriguez, there are morals into which one retell and learns from mistakes. It is important today in which storytelling
had been around from cave paintings, movies to novels. Without history, without the storytelling, mankind would not learn from their mistakes, never
dream of heroes like Alfred Einstein and would not acknowledge anything of the past. Mankind would bewildered of the past, then eventually will be

As in today's society, one can witness someone being treated differently from others or oneself. Throughout the world, many can see discrimination,
prejudice, poverty and happening. It contributes on a larger scale to people and how one gets treated whether it is their race, nationality, ethnicity and
religion. In the article, "Alabama school won't let Latino teen enroll, right group says," by Nick Valencia, CNN, states that "an Alabama high school
declined to enroll a 17–year–old Latino student twice "simply" because he was born in Mexico, the Southern Poverty Law Center said" (Valencia).
This is a valuable point. It shows that one can discriminate for no particular reason yet for national origin. Prior to this, the author points this to raise
the issue of how a school can treat one differently, yet there are factors on why does the school not enroll the student. Many people may also
experience what the teenager feels and is going through. This article is important today because there are some who do not have prior knowledge of
realizing on how someone can treat differently based on categories. In additional, the article, "Poor Latinos are victims of abuse nationwide, activists
say," by Arthur Brice, CNN, reports that "Forty–one percent of the people surveyed said they had experienced theft of their wages by employers.
Forty–seven percent said they know someone who was treated unfairly by police. Seventy–seven percent of women surveyed said they have been
sexually harassed by bosses, many saying that bosses used their immigration status as leverage." (Brice). It is important to consider this point because
many do not recognize how others put in an effort such as some low class Latinos yet not get treated equally. This points out that due to lower class
society being "believed" as not worthy therefore when something happens to one, they won't believe them except the

Luis Rodriguez Always Running Analysis
Luis Rodriguez is a very well known writer and was the 2014 Los Angeles Poet Laureate. One of his most famous works is Always Running. This
memoir describes the event in which Rodriguez was confronted by white boys when he went to "their" side of the tracks and were eventually beat
up because they were Latino (a.k.a discrimination). Here he describes how he was going to do something innocent, like by some "good" groceries for
his mom on the other sides of the track with his brother. Though they are then discriminated by white boys because they are on "their" side of the
tracks. We get a descriptive point of view from the author of his feeling towards the event. Though, he uses more than clever wording.
This memoir has very deep meaning in its choices of words and various details that make the memoir more interesting and helps there be more of a
connection between the text and the reader. You can even see the use of some of the ninth grade expectations in this piece. This includes syntax,
Connotation, and imagery. Syntax is used in this piece by creating pauses and emphasis using punctuation on certain phrases to make the reader feel the
effect. Connotation is also used carefully in the writing in certain words to make a phrase or word have a strong effect on the reader. Imagery is also

The writer accomplishes making the writing more interesting by, using three of many expectations for a ninth grader which are, connotation, syntax,

Always Running, A Comparative Analysis
After reading all three novels, Always Running written by Luis Rodriguez, Soul on Ice written by Elgeridge Cleaver, and Lessons from San
Quentin written by Bill Dallas, there are many similarities. All three novels are telling a story of their life. Where Racism, people, struggles,
influences, society, prison are all things that Rodriguez, Cleaver and Dallas experienced in their life and had an effect on who they are today.
Proving that how and where someone is raised can and will affect their decisions throughout life. However, it is up to themselves and very possible to
emerge against the odds and transform yourself into a greater person because of your struggles. Rodriguez told of his life being an immigrant to United

In the book Always running there are lots of examples of an individual making a difference in society. Luis the main person in the book he is the
person that leads the walkout and leads the students to try to make a change he fights against injustice in the school against Mr. Madison after he
decided to fire one of the Latino teachers at the school. Luis also fights against cultural appropriation when he tries out to be the mascot of the school,
the mascot was an aztec and before Luis became the mascot all the other mascots were White people who probably made fun of the culture. One of the
techniques that the author used in the book and I saw this a lot is vocabulary he had to make a 3 page glossary with spanish words he also didn't use

Book Review: Always Running By Luis Rodriguez
Always Running
The school board is not quite certain that schools should continue to include fiction in the curriculum. However, if fiction is taught to students it may
actually teach life lessons. Fictional literature can change someone's perspective on, what problems we may come across. For instance, a fictional
book can help us relate to all the controversial problems that do occur in today's society. I disagree with the school board's thoughts about completely
banning it. This type of literature can deepen our knowledge and teach us about things that we don't experience on a day to day basis.
Always Running by Luis Rodriguez includes several different social issues. For example, there is a lot of hate towards Luis because of his ethnicity.
He was constantly bullied because of the language he spoke and where he came from. If Luis spoke Spanish in school, then he...show more content...
Luis had a very rough and unfair childhood. He and his family were constantly moving because they were economically unstable and because of how
much involvement he had with gang violence. As Luis gets more involved in the gang life him and his friends began to establish a gang called, "The
Impersonations." On page 41 in the book he says, "The impersonations is how we wove something out of the threads of nothing." At one point Luis and
his gang family thought that was all they could rely on at the time.
Nonfiction is easier to believe than fiction. It is likely that we find interest in what we read when the book is nonfiction rather than a fiction book.
However, fiction helps you think more while processing the text you are trying to comprehend. Thoughts like, "what if this happened to me," "How
would I react," tend to come up. I have learned more about East LA and how gang violence was, and is still a major issue. Literature influences
change. If Luis didn't encounter writing, or poetry he may still be involved in

`` Always Running By Luis Rodriguez
Prior to being assigned the reading of the memoir "Always Running", by Luis Rodriguez, I had never given much thought on juveniles involved in
gang life. Rodriguez achieved success as an award–winning poet; sure the streets would no longer haunt him – until his own son joined a gang.
Rodriguez fought for his child by telling his own story in the vivid memoir, "Always Running." "Always Running" is the compilation of events Luis
experienced during his youth in San Gabriel. The theme of the book is to always strive for the best things in life and to always take a stand for what
you believe. Lured by the seemingly invincible gang culture of East L.A., he witnessed countless shootings and beatings, as well as senseless acts of
street crime against his friends and family members. As a Latino in a poor neighborhood, Luis struggled through criticism, stereotypes, and
mistreatment. With the help of his mentor, Chente, Luis saw a way out through education and the power of word to successfully break free from years
of violence and desperation.
Luis was growing up into the life of gang banging, gaining a reputation in San Gabriel by being scouted into bigger gangs in the area. Increasing his
involvement in the gang by stealing form stores, to eventually being part of premeditated arson and murders. Luis was well on his way to a life in
prison or worse, death. By growing up during a time of racial discrimination, options were limited to becoming a factory worker or gangster. Luis met

Always Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days in L.A. Analysis
By Gillian Husack
Introduction
Always Running is, essentially, a detailed memoir by Luis Rodriguez. Moreover, the author describes his sordid past as a gang member in Los
Angeles during the 1960 's. As a consequence of residing in a gang, Rodriguez became involved in spontaneous acts of violence; for instance, accounts
included rape, drug peddling, shootings, and multiple other reasons for arrests. But, the deciding factor that had made him feel the need to finish
confessing his atrocities, was only after hearing that his son, Ramiro, had 'rolled in' with a local gang. Determined to warn his son of the hazardousness
of gang association, Always Running features traumatizing depictions of true events set against the backdrop of the beggar streets of L.A. during the
anti–establishment racial occurrence.
Plot Development
RodrГguez began school at a disadvantage, being unable to speak English, as have many other tykes of Spanish–speaking background. "In those days
there was no way to integrate the non–English–speaking children. So they just made it a crime to speak anything but English. If a Spanish word
sneaked out . . . kids were often sent to the office to get swatted or to get detention. Teachers complained that maybe the children were saying bad things
about them." Thus RodrГguez entered the conventional society as a social outcast, uncomfortable in the language of the ruling culture, and compelled

`` Always Running, Luis J. Rodriguez
In Always Running, Luis J. Rodriguez recalls his time growing up in Los Angeles during the 60s and 70s. Rodriguez writes of the hardships that his
family had first encountered while trying to assimilate into American society and how he would often, while growing up, be criminalized by his
teachers, law enforcement, other people, his peers, his community, and eventually people who cared most for him. Rodriguez recalls the times where
he and some friends came together and created a family, a brotherhood of sort, in order to fulfill his need of belonging, but as other people in the
community had also formed groups to consolidate power, thus marked the beginning of rivalry and the introduction of gangs. Rodriguez's gang life had
been filled with tragedies and filled with great times, but ultimately he tried to leave the life of crime and commit to an education. Rodriguez tried
stepping away from the gang lifestyle by going to school and writing poetry, but ended up back in the life of crime after a serious altercation with the
police. When Rodriguez went back to his gang lifestyle, he found the same gang that treated him as a brother, had shunned him away after Rodriguez
had offered a solution to wither away the gang violence. The way the book was written made the reading a bit hard and unclear, for Rodriguez often
would talk about a certain time and the age he was for that specific story, then he would then jump to another age or another story without any kind of
transition.

Always Running Film Analysis
Through books, authors often try to communicate messages about society, or predict what will happen to it. Through their literature, they explore the
different aspects of what their community is comprised of, and shed light on certain subjects that would otherwise be left untouched by the minds of
readers. Similarly, movies share these messages with the masses, and make it more accessible to the community. Oftentimes, directors use the cinema
to paint a picture of what life is like, or what life will be like. Through these two different fields, artists are able to share their knowledge with their
audience, and audiences are able to soak up this knowledge, and relate to it. In Always Running, a memoir written by Luis Rodriguez, he shares an

For Luis Rodriguez, he is ignored, and the school system basically gave up on him. Luis could easily recall "when [he] first entered school in
Watts, how [he] had been virtually written off, pushed into a corner with building blocks and treated like a pariah; how in Garvey [he] had been
heaved out of classes, and later in high school, forced to drop out and labeled a failure"(Rodriguez 218). It is impossible to succeed when everyone
contributes to your failure. From the minute he stepped foot inside a school, the teachers wouldn't even try to teach him, and shoved him into the
corner. The only thing this taught him is that his education isn't as important as the education of the white children. As a spanish speaking child, the
teachers never made an effort to communicate with him, and he is exiled from an institution that should be welcoming him with open arms.
Similarly, in Gattaca, Vincent's need for an education is completely ignored, and he is told that "the only way [he is] ever going to see the inside of a
spaceship is if [he is] cleaning it"(Niccol). The only thing Vincent is ever taught is how to serve. Vincent's education is never a priority for anyone
around him, including himself. At birth he is told that he will never succeed, so he began to believe it himself. His parents doubted him, and told him
that he would never accomplish his dreams.

Always Running Book Report
The book Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez is about a boy or guy named Luis and his family. This book takes place in gang infested cities in
Los Angeles. The action begins when Luis talks about him and his family. Then, after talking about his family the story goes to talk about how he
joined a gang and did a lot of bad things as a teenager. Next, Luis about what he was doing and starts to think about what he is doing wrong and tries
to change it. After that, Luis joins a boxing team to stop thinking and stop being involved with gangs. The story ends talking about how he want to be
an example to his kids and doesn't want them to follow the wrong footsteps he did. The authors theme to this story I think is to keep going and not
give up.

Always Running
In the novel Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez, the main character "Grillo" is trying to find a way to better himself and beat the street and gang
life of South Central Los Angeles.
The author Luis Rodriguez wrote the book about his childhood and teen years, so he did beat the streets and he also became a famous author. In order
to accomplish this goal he had to overcome many obstacles throughout his life. One of the obstacles was school and education. He felt as if he didn't
belong due to his first american school experience. As stated in the novel, His teacher didn't even try to help him because he didn't speak any english.
As a result of Grillo's first American school experience in kindergarten,...show more content...
Education always finds a way to bring him down. For example within chapter six, Grillo goes into his english literature class with a book that he
likes to read but, the rest of the classroom was reading something different so his teacher confront him about it. And Grillo tries to persuade him to
let him read the book. "This book is something i'd like to read. I can even do a report on it." "Young man, you do not decide your assignments in this
class. If you can't participate like the rest of us, I suggest you leave." "Fine– who gives a fuck what i want!" This quote illustrates another way that
education is unwelcoming to Grillo. He tries to better himself, but the education system fails to accommodate his

Always Running Chapter Summary
Chapter one of Luis J. RodrГguez's memoir, Always Running: La Vida Loca, details RodrГguez's youth living in poverty and homelessness in Los
Angeles, California. With his vivid language and detail, he helps me see how growing up in this state changed his view of the world and of himself.
One way poverty changed his view on the world is how he hated the cold, even more that someone who only experiences cold in the outside. His family
didn't have the money to pay for gas or light, so the house was always cold. Their bath water was always cold. One particular moment that sticks out is
how RodrГguez's family is looking for a place to eat our because they don't have the heat to cook, and he doesn't want to go inside. When his mother

It's reiterated in different forms throughout the chapter, in different ways. He talks about how one Christmas he had gotten gifts, and promptly
broken them all. He writes, "I suppose in my mind it didn't seem right to have things that were in working order, unspent," (2054). This is easy to
understand as well. Shirts with logos that hadn't faded, jeans with no holes them, shoes that weren't too tight; all of them have felt too nice for me,
ever since I was little. My first instinct has always been, and probably will always be to break new things in, and make them more worn. Another way
he shows discomfort with the idea of not being in poverty is how RodrГguez talks about the houses his mother works in. He talks about the smell
specifically and how it was different from his home. The smells in the white people's houses was, "sweet and nauseating," but the smells on 105th
street where he lived were, "funky, earth, animal and mechanical" (2054, 2055). He's clearly far more comfortable with the more natural smells of his
neighborhood than the fake sweet, perfumed smells of the houses his mother

Essay about Running
Running is very good for humans in many different ways. It is a great way to get exercise, and a great way to meet new people. There are many
positives, and some negatives, it is easy, enjoyable and makes humans more social, you can do it at anytime, and it relieves stress rather than give
stress. Although there are some negatives with running, there are also many positives. Many people run because of the health reasons. It is good for the
heart and lungs and people run in the fresh air. Running outside rather than inside is good for you too because of the fresh air. Running also relieves

person overdoes their exercise and can be physically harmed. Although there are some negatives, there are more positives to running. Running is
easy, enjoyable and is very social. Many people see running as a good place to meet new people and enjoyable to do, it is also one of the easiest ways
to exercise. Running can be very fun, it is easy because you need no experience to run. Training for races is also fun it can be done by men and
women, girls and boys at any age. You can meet new people who can be very social able, you can meet new people by either running by yourself or
with a friend or spouse. People of all sizes and races and ages can run it is a great way to meet new people and a great way to exercise. Running is a
great way to exercise and you could do it anytime and anywhere. People can run either on streets or on paths, but paths are a bit more ideal. Running
is more ideal to do on hard surfaces, but is better exercise if you do it on uneven ground. You can run too fast and you can run too far but whether you
run fast or far you are still running and are still getting exercise. To prevent getting hurt while running

The novel titled Always Running is titled this because the main character Grillo is constantly running from society, family, and away from gangs. You
might ask yourself why is the novel titled Always Running? and its because in the novel he is running all the time. One example of Grillo constantly
running is when he and his family would run away from the society in which they lived in. They would run from the racism, disrespect, and criticism.
For these reasons Grillo would be running as quoted in the text "I'm just a ball. Bouncing outside. Bouncing inside"(pg.34). The quote explains how
Grillo and his family can't get a stable place because of the society. Another example of Grillo constantly running is when he started running away from

Always Running Chapter 1 Analysis

  • 1. Always Running Chapter 1 Analysis People go through different changes in their life. People can be shy and then confident or some could be lazy and then hardworking. In the story Always Running the main character Grillo goes through many stages in his life, from maturing, to being violent, and then wanting better for himself. In the beginning of the novel Grillo is shy, weak, and illustrates low confidence however in chapter 2 Grillo begins to change by building up his confidence and matured side. In this chapter Grillo defends his brother by standing up to a couple of bullies who were trash talking his older brother. When his older brother Rano asked him why he stood up to them, Grillo replied with "I did it because I love you"(pg. 51). This quote from the novel shows how Grillo starts changing from being the protected to protector. Another change we start to see in Grillo's character is his violent side. ...show more content... Being a member of Lomas at his age means having to be involved in many hits and missions to earn his respect from the gang. What we read in Chapter 5 is a time in Grillo's life where him and other members of Lomas go do a hit on a Sangras members house. Their ideal tactic was to throw molotovs into the house of a Sangras members house and set it to flames. In chapter he tells himself, "It became a habit for me to take the trench coat whenever I did a job like this"(pg. 118). The quote means he's always wearing that same trench coat whenever he is involved in some gang mission that stirs up a lot of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Rodriguez With the power of Fiction we are able to express ourselves, develop new ways of thinking, and the factor of seeing someone else's footsteps simply with their biography or novel they have written for the readers. Novels like Luis J Rodriguez, Always Running can impact the youth with the chilling story of his facing of drug abuse and gang life/violence he faces throughout the novel. The huge point of the novel discrimination and relating it to the novel and real world present issues that are occurring throughout the novel and now. • 3. Always Running By Luis Rodriguez Shouldn't fiction be part of students' curriculum in their academics? School board across the states no longer has a place for fiction in school curriculum. From the beginning of time, many of native storytellers carry morals through generations of passing down customs, history and heritage. Such as Always Running by Luis Rodriguez, there are morals into which one retell and learns from mistakes. It is important today in which storytelling had been around from cave paintings, movies to novels. Without history, without the storytelling, mankind would not learn from their mistakes, never dream of heroes like Alfred Einstein and would not acknowledge anything of the past. Mankind would bewildered of the past, then eventually will be hopeless in...show more content... As in today's society, one can witness someone being treated differently from others or oneself. Throughout the world, many can see discrimination, prejudice, poverty and happening. It contributes on a larger scale to people and how one gets treated whether it is their race, nationality, ethnicity and religion. In the article, "Alabama school won't let Latino teen enroll, right group says," by Nick Valencia, CNN, states that "an Alabama high school declined to enroll a 17–year–old Latino student twice "simply" because he was born in Mexico, the Southern Poverty Law Center said" (Valencia). This is a valuable point. It shows that one can discriminate for no particular reason yet for national origin. Prior to this, the author points this to raise the issue of how a school can treat one differently, yet there are factors on why does the school not enroll the student. Many people may also experience what the teenager feels and is going through. This article is important today because there are some who do not have prior knowledge of realizing on how someone can treat differently based on categories. In additional, the article, "Poor Latinos are victims of abuse nationwide, activists say," by Arthur Brice, CNN, reports that "Forty–one percent of the people surveyed said they had experienced theft of their wages by employers. Forty–seven percent said they know someone who was treated unfairly by police. Seventy–seven percent of women surveyed said they have been sexually harassed by bosses, many saying that bosses used their immigration status as leverage." (Brice). It is important to consider this point because many do not recognize how others put in an effort such as some low class Latinos yet not get treated equally. This points out that due to lower class society being "believed" as not worthy therefore when something happens to one, they won't believe them except the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Luis Rodriguez Always Running Analysis Luis Rodriguez is a very well known writer and was the 2014 Los Angeles Poet Laureate. One of his most famous works is Always Running. This memoir describes the event in which Rodriguez was confronted by white boys when he went to "their" side of the tracks and were eventually beat up because they were Latino (a.k.a discrimination). Here he describes how he was going to do something innocent, like by some "good" groceries for his mom on the other sides of the track with his brother. Though they are then discriminated by white boys because they are on "their" side of the tracks. We get a descriptive point of view from the author of his feeling towards the event. Though, he uses more than clever wording. This memoir has very deep meaning in its choices of words and various details that make the memoir more interesting and helps there be more of a connection between the text and the reader. You can even see the use of some of the ninth grade expectations in this piece. This includes syntax, Connotation, and imagery. Syntax is used in this piece by creating pauses and emphasis using punctuation on certain phrases to make the reader feel the effect. Connotation is also used carefully in the writing in certain words to make a phrase or word have a strong effect on the reader. Imagery is also used several times, as it...show more content... The writer accomplishes making the writing more interesting by, using three of many expectations for a ninth grader which are, connotation, syntax, and imagery. He used all of these categories various times throughout the story/memoir. All of these helped in making the memoir more emotional and what makes it impacting. In this memoir we are given a true and emotional impacting words that make us feel various emotions inside. • 5. Always Running, A Comparative Analysis After reading all three novels, Always Running written by Luis Rodriguez, Soul on Ice written by Elgeridge Cleaver, and Lessons from San Quentin written by Bill Dallas, there are many similarities. All three novels are telling a story of their life. Where Racism, people, struggles, influences, society, prison are all things that Rodriguez, Cleaver and Dallas experienced in their life and had an effect on who they are today. Proving that how and where someone is raised can and will affect their decisions throughout life. • 6. Always Running In the book Always running there are lots of examples of an individual making a difference in society. Luis the main person in the book he is the person that leads the walkout and leads the students to try to make a change he fights against injustice in the school against Mr. Madison after he decided to fire one of the Latino teachers at the school. Luis also fights against cultural appropriation when he tries out to be the mascot of the school, the mascot was an aztec and before Luis became the mascot all the other mascots were White people who probably made fun of the culture. One of the techniques that the author used in the book and I saw this a lot is vocabulary he had to make a 3 page glossary with spanish words he also didn't use spanish Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Book Review: Always Running By Luis Rodriguez Always Running The school board is not quite certain that schools should continue to include fiction in the curriculum. However, if fiction is taught to students it may actually teach life lessons. Fictional literature can change someone's perspective on, what problems we may come across. For instance, a fictional book can help us relate to all the controversial problems that do occur in today's society. I disagree with the school board's thoughts about completely banning it. He and his family were constantly moving because they were economically unstable and because of how much involvement he had with gang violence. As Luis gets more involved in the gang life him and his friends began to establish a gang called, "The Impersonations." On page 41 in the book he says, "The impersonations is how we wove something out of the threads of nothing." At one point Luis and his gang family thought that was all they could rely on at the time. Nonfiction is easier to believe than fiction. It is likely that we find interest in what we read when the book is nonfiction rather than a fiction book. However, fiction helps you think more while processing the text you are trying to comprehend. Thoughts like, "what if this happened to me," "How would I react," tend to come up. I have learned more about East LA and how gang violence was, and is still a major issue. Literature influences change. If Luis didn't encounter writing, or poetry he may still be involved in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. `` Always Running By Luis Rodriguez Prior to being assigned the reading of the memoir "Always Running", by Luis Rodriguez, I had never given much thought on juveniles involved in gang life. Rodriguez achieved success as an award–winning poet; sure the streets would no longer haunt him – until his own son joined a gang. Rodriguez fought for his child by telling his own story in the vivid memoir, "Always Running." "Always Running" is the compilation of events Luis experienced during his youth in San Gabriel. The theme of the book is to always strive for the best things in life and to always take a stand for what you believe. Lured by the seemingly invincible gang culture of East L.A., he witnessed countless shootings and beatings, as well as senseless acts of street crime against his friends and family members. As a Latino in a poor neighborhood, Luis struggled through criticism, stereotypes, and mistreatment. With the help of his mentor, Chente, Luis saw a way out through education and the power of word to successfully break free from years of violence and desperation. Luis was growing up into the life of gang banging, gaining a reputation in San Gabriel by being scouted into bigger gangs in the area. Increasing his involvement in the gang by stealing form stores, to eventually being part of premeditated arson and murders. Luis was well on his way to a life in prison or worse, death. By growing up during a time of racial discrimination, options were limited to becoming a factory worker or gangster. Luis met Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Always Running : La Vida Loca Always Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days in L.A. Analysis By Gillian Husack Introduction Always Running is, essentially, a detailed memoir by Luis Rodriguez. Moreover, the author describes his sordid past as a gang member in Los Angeles during the 1960 's. As a consequence of residing in a gang, Rodriguez became involved in spontaneous acts of violence; for instance, accounts included rape, drug peddling, shootings, and multiple other reasons for arrests. But, the deciding factor that had made him feel the need to finish confessing his atrocities, was only after hearing that his son, Ramiro, had 'rolled in' with a local gang. Determined to warn his son of the hazardousness of gang association, Always Running features traumatizing depictions of true events set against the backdrop of the beggar streets of L.A. during the anti–establishment racial occurrence. Plot Development RodrГguez began school at a disadvantage, being unable to speak English, as have many other tykes of Spanish–speaking background. "In those days there was no way to integrate the non–English–speaking children. So they just made it a crime to speak anything but English. If a Spanish word sneaked out . . . kids were often sent to the office to get swatted or to get detention. Teachers complained that maybe the children were saying bad things about them." Thus RodrГguez entered the conventional society as a social outcast, uncomfortable in the language of the ruling culture, and compelled to feel Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. `` Always Running, Luis J. Rodriguez In Always Running, Luis J. Rodriguez recalls his time growing up in Los Angeles during the 60s and 70s. Rodriguez writes of the hardships that his family had first encountered while trying to assimilate into American society and how he would often, while growing up, be criminalized by his teachers, law enforcement, other people, his peers, his community, and eventually people who cared most for him. Rodriguez recalls the times where he and some friends came together and created a family, a brotherhood of sort, in order to fulfill his need of belonging, but as other people in the community had also formed groups to consolidate power, thus marked the beginning of rivalry and the introduction of gangs. Rodriguez's gang life had been filled with tragedies and filled with great times, but ultimately he tried to leave the life of crime and commit to an education. Rodriguez tried stepping away from the gang lifestyle by going to school and writing poetry, but ended up back in the life of crime after a serious altercation with the police. When Rodriguez went back to his gang lifestyle, he found the same gang that treated him as a brother, had shunned him away after Rodriguez had offered a solution to wither away the gang violence. The way the book was written made the reading a bit hard and unclear, for Rodriguez often would talk about a certain time and the age he was for that specific story, then he would then jump to another age or another story without any kind of transition. • 11. Always Running Film Analysis Through books, authors often try to communicate messages about society, or predict what will happen to it. Through their literature, they explore the different aspects of what their community is comprised of, and shed light on certain subjects that would otherwise be left untouched by the minds of readers. Similarly, movies share these messages with the masses, and make it more accessible to the community. Oftentimes, directors use the cinema to paint a picture of what life is like, or what life will be like. Through these two different fields, artists are able to share their knowledge with their audience, and audiences are able to soak up this knowledge, and relate to it. In Always Running, a memoir written by Luis Rodriguez, he shares an ...show more content... For Luis Rodriguez, he is ignored, and the school system basically gave up on him. Luis could easily recall "when [he] first entered school in Watts, how [he] had been virtually written off, pushed into a corner with building blocks and treated like a pariah; how in Garvey [he] had been heaved out of classes, and later in high school, forced to drop out and labeled a failure"(Rodriguez 218). It is impossible to succeed when everyone contributes to your failure. From the minute he stepped foot inside a school, the teachers wouldn't even try to teach him, and shoved him into the corner. The only thing this taught him is that his education isn't as important as the education of the white children. As a spanish speaking child, the teachers never made an effort to communicate with him, and he is exiled from an institution that should be welcoming him with open arms. Similarly, in Gattaca, Vincent's need for an education is completely ignored, and he is told that "the only way [he is] ever going to see the inside of a spaceship is if [he is] cleaning it"(Niccol). The only thing Vincent is ever taught is how to serve. Vincent's education is never a priority for anyone around him, including himself. At birth he is told that he will never succeed, so he began to believe it himself. His parents doubted him, and told him that he would never accomplish his dreams. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The action begins when Luis talks about him and his family. Then, after talking about his family the story goes to talk about how he joined a gang and did a lot of bad things as a teenager. Next, Luis about what he was doing and starts to think about what he is doing wrong and tries to change it. After that, Luis joins a boxing team to stop thinking and stop being involved with gangs. • 13. Always Running Luis Rodriguez Quotes Always Running In the novel Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez, the main character "Grillo" is trying to find a way to better himself and beat the street and gang life of South Central Los Angeles. The author Luis Rodriguez wrote the book about his childhood and teen years, so he did beat the streets and he also became a famous author. In order to accomplish this goal he had to overcome many obstacles throughout his life. One of the obstacles was school and education. He felt as if he didn't belong due to his first american school experience. As stated in the novel, His teacher didn't even try to help him because he didn't speak any english. • 14. Always Running Chapter Summary Chapter one of Luis J. RodrГguez's memoir, Always Running: La Vida Loca, details RodrГguez's youth living in poverty and homelessness in Los Angeles, California. With his vivid language and detail, he helps me see how growing up in this state changed his view of the world and of himself. One way poverty changed his view on the world is how he hated the cold, even more that someone who only experiences cold in the outside. His family didn't have the money to pay for gas or light, so the house was always cold. Their bath water was always cold. One particular moment that sticks out is how RodrГguez's family is looking for a place to eat our because they don't have the heat to cook, and he doesn't want to go inside. When his mother gets upset and asks why, he...show more content... It's reiterated in different forms throughout the chapter, in different ways. He talks about how one Christmas he had gotten gifts, and promptly broken them all. He writes, "I suppose in my mind it didn't seem right to have things that were in working order, unspent," (2054). This is easy to understand as well. Shirts with logos that hadn't faded, jeans with no holes them, shoes that weren't too tight; all of them have felt too nice for me, ever since I was little. My first instinct has always been, and probably will always be to break new things in, and make them more worn. Another way he shows discomfort with the idea of not being in poverty is how RodrГguez talks about the houses his mother works in. He talks about the smell specifically and how it was different from his home. The smells in the white people's houses was, "sweet and nauseating," but the smells on 105th street where he lived were, "funky, earth, animal and mechanical" (2054, 2055). He's clearly far more comfortable with the more natural smells of his neighborhood than the fake sweet, perfumed smells of the houses his mother Get more content on HelpWriting.net

There are many positives, and some negatives, it is easy, enjoyable and makes humans more social, you can do it at anytime, and it relieves stress rather than give stress. Although there are some negatives with running, there are also many positives. Many people run because of the health reasons. It is good for the heart and lungs and people run in the fresh air. Running outside rather than inside is good for you too because of the fresh air. People can also get discouraged when running because some are doing it to lose weight and some do not lose weight. People can also "hit the wall" when running which happens when a person overdoes their exercise and can be physically harmed. Although there are some negatives, there are more positives to running. Running is easy, enjoyable and is very social. Many people see running as a good place to meet new people and enjoyable to do, it is also one of the easiest ways to exercise. Running can be very fun, it is easy because you need no experience to run. Training for races is also fun it can be done by men and women, girls and boys at any age. You can meet new people who can be very social able, you can meet new people by either running by yourself or with a friend or spouse. People of all sizes and races and ages can run it is a great way to meet new people and a great way to exercise. Running is a great way to exercise and you could do it anytime and anywhere. People can run either on streets or on paths, but paths are a bit more ideal. Running is more ideal to do on hard surfaces, but is better exercise if you do it on uneven ground. You can run too fast and you can run too far but whether you run fast or far you are still running and are still getting exercise. For instance it can affect you in a negative way which can lose you in the long run but, eventually you'll find your way back. Within the novel of Always Running, by Luis J.
