SENSORY PERCEPTIONS2
"Sensory Perceptions" The body's senses are the input devices of the human computer known as the brain. These senses, touch, sight, smell, sound and
taste, are only as effective as the human brain can process the information. The accuracy of these inputs can easily be deceived when the senses
conflict or not interpreted as intended. Like any other computer, the information being processed and stored is only as good as the information was
input (garbage in, garbage out). Sensory information is almost always...show more content...
The more sensors used, the more accurate the information is which can then be used in creating thoughts and memories. "The human capacity to
perform real time information processing is limited. The limited speed of neuronal operations may partly be compensated for by parallel interactive
and distributed processing" (Carlsson, Petrovic, Skare, Petersson & Ingvar, 2000, p. 681). There are many factors that can contribute to the
accuracy or inaccuracy of sensor data. Our perception will influence the way we interpret sensor information. "Sharpening our perceptions is crucial
for delivering better data to our brains" (Kirby & Goodpaster, 2007, p. 54). Personal deception and the realization that our senses can be
deceived will affect the accuracy of that data. Once we accept that our senses are not perfect, we can then take steps to counter this deception or
improve the accuracy obtained. Listening is probably the largest contributor to the accuracy of sensor data. We learn as we listen and this affects the
final outcome in the long run as additional data is obtained that helps to refine the initial interpretation of the data. The roles of "Nature" and
"Nurtured" with regard to the interpretation and evaluation of sensory data has been disputed by scholars for centuries. Some believe that we are born
with information inherited

Sense Perception Essay
'We see and understand things not as they are but as we are'
Christopher Columbus, in the 1440's on his voyage to America, saw three mermaids and described them as insight of females who rose from the
sea. Did Christopher Columbus Imagine the mermaids because he was interested in fantasies or did he actual see it? On one hand I do believe that
we understand and see things not as they are but as we are, on the other hand disagree with this statement. The way we view things reflects on our
personality and each of our personality is different and some people also have similar personality. "We do not see things the way they are but as we
are" is said to be a Jewish proverb. The proverb talks about how we are engaged with sense perception. It...show more content...
Emotions are of different types sad, happy, angry, cheerful and many more. Sometimes people have mixed emotions as well. We know emotions
because we feel them and it tells us about what's going on in our mind.
Our state of mind also depends on the way we view things. Each person has different ways of seeing things. Even though each person views things
differently but one state of mind can make the person see things the same. When a person is sad then everything around him would be sad and
would react in a manner, which would make everyone, upset. When a person is happy then the people around him would be happy. The way people
view thing depends on emotion. If a person is sad then everyone about him could be sad. When many people are sad they could react the same way.
In some ways abstract ideas could be viewed the same for everyone and each idea could make the person view things differently.
Culture can play a very important role in the way we view things. Each culture has its own values and every culture is different from one another;
they infer things as they are but on how it seems. In Indian culture no woman is allowed to work or to be exposed to the world around her but in
America every woman has the freedom of rights. If Indians would see the American women then they would be ashamed of how America is, they
understand and see things as they are and as their culture is. Culture also makes

Sensation and Perception
Sensations and Perceptions are related but total different concepts. A distinction has been made between sensations and perceptions. Thomas Reid
(1758). The philosopher who made the original distinction between sensation and perception. He proposed that the crucial difference between the two
terms was that perception always refers to external objects whereas sensations refers to experiences within a person that is not linked to external objects
An example following Reid's way of distinguishing between sensation and perception world be say that if the light of a star we are sensing a tiny point

We are usually referring to the pinna. The funny looking structure that stick out from the sides of our hands. Pinna is the most part of theear that is
important in helping us to locate sounds and is of great importance for those of us who wear eyeglasses or earrings. The major working of the ear is
found inside the head, hidden from view. It is these hidden places inside the head that sound waves must travel before they are heard.in the first stage of
their journey they pass through the outer ear which consist of pinna and the auditory canal, auditory canal is a tube–like structure about 3 cm long
whose function is to protect the delicate structures of the middle ear from the hazards of the outside

Perception And Perception Of Perception
Imagine you are walking down the street; it is a beautiful, breezy day. You stop for a moment, you notice a tree. For some reason you find this tree to
be very alluring. You can't help but stare as you attempt to capture this moment. You notice the way the light dances through the branches, the way the
breeze catches each leaf, sending them into a blissful dance. The limbs move so freely throughout the crisp air. This expression of pure freedom and
bliss etched upon the face of nature. It captivates you. Since the very moment that this tree captured your attention, perception has been at work.
Perception has allowed for you to interpret this one particular occurrence and, in turn, experience life. The process of perception helps us to
experience the world at large. It is our perceptions that make up our conscious experience and make it possible for us to interact with the people and
objects that surround us. Perception, in psychological terms, can be defined as the process of organizing, interpreting, and selectively extracting
sensory information from the world around us. It is through this process that we are able to experience all of our senses. The perceptual process
refers not only to the recognition of a given stimulus but also the response we have to said stimuli. It is also through this process that we are able to
further our understanding of the world around us and ultimately, survive. The perceptual process shapes our experiences and allows us to take part in the

Perception of Others Essay
Perception of Others
There is no second chance for a first impression. Perception has never been random, since the beginning of time it has been human nature to judge
others before really getting a chance to know them. People immediately cast others into stereotypes in every situation: they form a schema, or an
organized set of thoughts about something containing properties and uses. These schemas effect the way people carry themselves around others.
Schemas are usually formed with in eight seconds of getting the initial impression of a person. This by psychologists is know as the ?eight–second
rule,? where people have been proven to form hypothesizes about others with in eight seconds of meeting or seeing an individual for the...show more

seems to be very ?uncool? to say the least. His oversized plaid jacket, tight laced large sneakers, and tight jeans combining with his out of control
curly hair and spectacles allow myself to automatically place ?the guy behind me? in a stereotype of nerds. The way he crosses his legs also leads
me to believe he is one of those that probably enjoy computers and Dungeons & Dragons, yet for all I know this guy could be the best basketball
player at Catawba. By his appearance I have already made assumptions about his lifestyle, or formed something referred to as Functional Association.
After realizing the extent of judgement I cast on others, I began to contemplate if others would place me in certain stereotypes if I didn?t appear as I
do; so, I decided to form my own experiment.
I decided to make myself salient, or stand out, to better see my impressions on people. I began a three–day experiment where I would wear my not–so
attractive glasses, a hooded sweatshirt, and Velcro shoes from Wal
–Mart to dress like one would call a ?bum.? Of my many experiences of the
weekend, three stood out from all the rest: my attendance at the soccer game, my trip to the Bar Charlotte nightclub, and being introduced to new
friends.
No girl in their right mind would dance with a guy with big ugly glasses. For we all know they have already formed something called an illusory
correlation, or a memory of a negative or distasteful person or instance. Here I began to look at not

Example Of Perception Research Paper
Your perception is how you see things, and basically what you think about them when you see them. For example, two people might see the same
thing visually like for an example two individuals see an older man with a beard and ragged clothes on the street with a sign asking for money.
Person one might perceive him as a lazy human being, and think he needs to get a job. And the other individual, on the other hand, might perceive him
to be a guy who, through no fault of his own, needs help, and still deserves respect. Our perceptions are shaped by our upbringing mostly, and by what
we are taught by others. Racism is another example of perception. It's all about what your "opinion" is when you see something.Everyone at least once
in their life has judged or even stereotyped someone just by taking one look at their...show more content...
I remember watching that show when I was younger and would always perceive a "geek" to look like that. But that's what movies and television
shows do, they are known for stereotyping and with that other who aren't taught will also perceive and believe these stereotypes that these
Hollywood films are showing.Perception and stereotypes is a massive problem that a lot of individuals of color are facing in a negative way. Both
my parents being Hispanic they have had their experiences with stereotypes coming in their way that being people assuming that they cannot speak
English and when they do speak English they get backhanded compliments saying that they were surprised that they speak "good English'. That's an
example of what microaggression is, verbal, nonverbal, or insults whether they were intentional or unintentional. Being half Colombian from my
mother's side I have heard so many stereotypes about how Colombians are drug dealers. Everyone knows who Pablo Escobar is. However, what he
isn't is a fair representation of all Colombians. Not everyone in Colombia is a coke trafficker or drug lord. Also, shocking fact, coke is not even legal in

Reflection About Perception
Perception changes everything; absolutely everything, from the tiniest little details to the life shaking decisions. It's one of the integral building
blocks of life, and it's the main difference between things. The difference between how something is viewed, object or person, is the perception it
holds. Now in my life this concept is quite interesting to behold. While I am still a school student, my perception is very different from my peers.
This comes from ten years of doing English at home. Yes, I am talking about homeschool. I was homeschooled from the very beginning all the way
up to the start of Senior English, Grade Ten. When I walked in the door of Miss Palmer's English class for the very first time, I was in awe. While I
had done English my whole life there was something different about learning the curriculum in a whole class setting rather than just by myself. In these
classes, I have learned many different things in regards to the English language and how it is used to give insight into our world around us. Some of
the techniques I learned related to those of representations, intertextuality and positioning. All of these are aspects of Metalanguage. I can say without a
shadow of a doubt that they have changed my life. From walking in that door, my perception changed, my eyes had been opened to the intricate details
that are a part of Senior English. From my plethora of film and literature knowledge, intertextuality was an immediate connection. Connections

"There is nothing in our mind unless it is first in the senses"
–Aquinas
Throughout our life senses have enriched our brains; they currently play a part with our brain as we think. As powerful as our senses are, they do not
always transfer accurate data to the brain. Especially when we are sick, tired or confused, our senses are even more deceiving to us. Our sensual
perception can deceive our brain in three ways: limited biologically, superficially and custom. (Kirby/Goodpaster, 2007)
There are factors that influence the accuracy of information received by human senses and how it affects the perception...show more content...
We could not know anything without the use of sensory perception. There is on the other hand, the possibility to gain knowledge by only using
sensory perception. In this case whatever you know you have experienced yourself. Yet the knowledge gained from purely sensory perception is in my
opinion not quite reliable. I believe this due to several reasons. (Goldstein, 2010)
If we speak about knowledge then we are speaking of what we as a society have accepted as knowledge. If only one person believes something to be
true then that is their opinion. We know how others experience their sensory perception. Sensory perception is something which every individual might
see different. Another factor which influence to what extent sensory perception is an accurate way of knowing is the fact that the brain wants to
simplify things in order to understand them.
From a personal stand point, I believe our sensory perception can lead us on the right path but to every positive there is a negative. Our emotions also
play a big part along with our senses and brain. If your emotions are all over the place the mind and senses will be too.
As a conclusion I believe that sensory perception as a way of knowing is very unreliable. I believe that sensory perception is too dependent on the
human brain. As I explained before, we do need sensory perception and therefore it is reliable to a certain extent. We cannot use sensory perception as
our only direct way of knowing but we can use it as a

Visual Perception Essay
Visual Perception
Any one given experience an organism perceives must incorporate several sensory systems, that involves numerous number of organs , that further
more are comprised of millions upon millions of firing cells. Perception is not a direct mirroring of stimulus, but a complex chaotic patterns dependent
on the simultaneously activity of neurons. This essay deals primarily with neurons from the optical sensory system. The outer ridge of the brain, known
as the cerebral cortex begins the analysis of sensory messages. (1) Nevertheless, visual perception is possibly more widespread than one area of the
cerebral cortex and like ly over various subcortical structures and number of different systems as well. (2) One of the many...show more content...
However, there are many gaps within the course, which cannot possibly fully formulate the sense of perception. Not only are there missing
intermediatary, but there is outside activity happening simultaneously along this path. As discussed in lecture, the retina sends (5 to 10) different
information activities to different parts of the brain. Neural data may be taken to the midbrain instead to the dicephalo n. The dicephalon consists the
lateral geniculate, which consists the visual occipital cortex. The complex midbrain is made up of other complex parts such as the superior collicus
and the optic tectrum. The optic tectrum is then made up of more complex in tricate parts, such as the protectal nucleus and the basal optic nerve. Once
again, the organization and specificity of complex within complex come into play. As seen here there are parallel simultaneous paths that are activated
or inactivated due to spec ific retina information.
Neurologists, Sheinberg and Logothetis studied macaque monkey responses to different visual imputs. (3) They tested the difference between one
image fixed on one eye and one image fixed on one eye accompanie d with a flash of a second image on the other eye. Tests show that former test did

Extra Sensory Perception
Have you ever had the feeling that you've been in an establishment before you've actually gone inside? Did you ever feel like you've known that
something was about to happen before there were any signs that it was about to occur? If you're not a skeptic about the powers of the mind, then there
might just be an explanation for your seemingly coincidental premonitions. It's a phenomenon called extra sensory perception, better known as ESP.
The textbook definition of this classification of parapsychology is "sensing" anything beyond the normal.(www.paranormalatoz.com) Most scientists do
not believe that this phenomenon exists. Nevertheless, controversial evidence can be used to sway the incredulous. By viewing and...show more

The actual term extra sensory perception wasn't used until the early 1930's. During this time an American scientist, Joseph Banks Rhine first began his
ground breaking experiments testing ESP's validity.(Encarta) His research was conducted at the Parapsychology Laboratory of North Carolina's, Duke
University.(Encarta) Rhine's most well–known experiment involved a deck of twenty–five cards. On the cards, written in heavy black ink, each card
had a different design on them. The designs included a star, a cross, a square, or wavy lines.(Encarta) The concealed deck of twenty–five cards was
shuffled. One random card was drawn from the deck at a time and the test subject was asked to identify the hidden marking on the flip–side of the card.
If the test subject correctly identified five out of twenty five cards correctly, it was considered pure chance.(Encarta) Rhine and his associates
concluded that if the individual named six out of ten of the cards correctly, then indeed the test subject possessed extra sensory perception.(Encarta)
From his experimentally proved evidence, it can easily be seen which stand Rhine took on the controversial existence of ESP. However, not all
scientists had acknowledged the authenticity of his trials and the legitimacy of this branch of pseudo–science called parapsychology. Certain scientists
do not believe in the reality of extrasensory perception due to their lack of faith in the experiments that test it's

Are Some Decisions Base on: Perception or Reality?
Have you ever thought you heard something, but there was nothing there? Have you ever thought you saw someone in the corner of your eye, and
when you looked there was no person there? When we look down from a high building on people, do they appear small like ants? Aren't there
thousands of occasions when we do misperceive? What is reality and perception? Mainstream science describes reality as "the state of things as they
actually exist". So reality is simply: everything we observe. Perception is the process by which organisms interpret and organize sensation to produce

I have come across this scenario in my social life and also at school. This is the first time I am involved in a situation of being accused of
plagiarism. Therefore, I add it as a mark in my learning and life experiences. I am currently a student at a particular university, working hard to get
good grades so as to leave with two concentrations in business. Let me share an example with my readers of an event that occurred in my life. I
was accused of plagiarism. I had the choice as to how I am going to respond to it. (I use this example because it is something I have been through).
I know for a fact that I did not plagiarize, and I was willing to make the truth be a reality. I can choose to see the event as something terrible and
unfair to which I will respond accordingly. Or I can choose to see the event as something that will inspire me to make something more of my life,
to try my best to resolve it as soon as possible, and hope I will never find myself getting trapped in this situation ever again. My teacher thought my
final paper was similar in ideas to another person's in content and structure. Therefore, she grades me down from an A to a C plus, because of
suspicion of plagiarism. That was because of her perception of me, and of life which also became her reality. It did not make it reality for me and my
reality was very different from hers. From this example I can see that I did not have control over

Psychology : Sensation And Perception Essay
1.Define sensation and perception. How do sensation and perception differ from cognition? How might sensation and perception be related to cognition?
a.Although sensation and perception are closely related, it is very important to understand the difference between the two. Sensation is the process of
sensing our environment using our different sensory systems. There are four different systems: visual, auditory, cutaneous, and chemical. The
information we acquire through sensation is then sent to our brains. This is where the two now link together. Perception is the way that we interpret that
information from our senses in order for it to mean anything. Simply put, perceiving is believing. Perception differs from person to person. Using
color as an example, the color "green" to one person may be different to another person.
Cognition is not the same as perception but they are directly linked to one another as well. Simplest way to explain cognition is the word thinking.
Cognition involves our thought processes and how we store information. 90% of what we see is lost by the time it reaches our brain. This means that we
combine our visual information with information previously stored in our brain. So without the information from cognition, perception and sensation
would not be the same.
2.Describe the Gestalt Approach to sensation and perception. How does it differ from the Empiricist Approach?
a.The Gestalt Approach, which came from German psychologists, believes that

Essay On Perception In Hamlet
Perception in Hamlet Essay
"There is no truth. There is only perception." a knowledgeable quote by French novelist, Gustave Flaubert, discussing how humans perceive things
versus reality. Perception is how one interprets the world and its individuals through their own knowledge and experiences; therefore, there is a diverse
amount of viewpoints on the same subjects and people. As a result, those who are capable of perceiving situations accomplish more than those who are
incapable. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare develops the theme that those who are incapable of perceiving others leads to punishment, however, those
who successfully perceive are rewarded. This theme can be proven through three major characters: Claudius, the main antagonist, Gertrude, the mother
of the main character, and Hamlet, the main character. These characters portray both successful and failed attempts of perception throughout the play.
Claudius has experienced failed and successful perception that has left massive impacts in his life. An example of how failed perception caused
suffering happens when Claudius attends the play, "The Murder of Gonzago", where Hamlet jokingly calls "The Mouse–Trap" and fails to see it as a
trap Hamlet has staged for him. Hamlet has set up the play to receive a reaction from Claudius therefore confirming he was the one who murdered Old
King Hamlet, his own brother. Due to this failed perception of the play's true intentions, Claudius seems to be quite upset about the play

Perception And Perception Of Perception
The term friendship is defined as a mutual strand of affection between two or more people. It is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an
association. It is a link between people who show trust and altruism with one another without the placement of sexual or physical intimacy that
commonly happens in a romantic relationship. Friends tend to share common interests, demographics, backgrounds, and traits of the self. However,
before we get to know a person, we use perception to categorize them into a certain role. It often causes us to assume that the other party is superior
or inferior to us. We do this more often than not without even realizing we've engaged in perception. Perception played a very large part in the first
meeting of my best friend, Cinda, and I. In Chapter 4: Interpersonal Perception (Floyd, 2011), there are many examples of the ways in which people
instantly perceive another person as being one way or another. This exact thing happened when I met Cinda. Our perceptions of one another were not
complimentary or nice, in fact, we were practically enemies at the time. Negativity bias, or the tendency to weigh negative information more heavily
than positive (Floyd, 2011), would describe what we felt with each other. We were unable to see anything good or complimentary about the other.
What exactly brought on these feelings? One might ask. Well, embarrassingly enough, it all started with a boy; Cinda and I had never even spoke to
each other. Ironically

Essay on The Perception of the Perception
The Perception of the Perception The subjective nature of perception is an inborn characteristic humanity. However, humans found the ability to still
classify knowledge under two categories, objective and subjective. Knowledge in the subjective sense, or subjective knowledge for short, is the
individual knowledge that each person gains through personal experiences. Artists often try to portray a scene that has an emotional and psychological
effect on the viewer, by drawing on their own experiences and thoughts. However, scientists are interested in developing the former type of knowledge,
knowledge in the objective sense. Objective knowledge is subjective knowledge which has passed through...show more content...
Sir Karl outlined this process in a tetradic schema illustrated below: P1 Г TT Г EE Г P2 In this process, P1 is the original problem, practical or
theoretical, TT is the tentative theory that is offered to solve the problem, EE is the "error elimination" where it is critically tested, and finally P2 is
the problems that are left over and those which are created by this process. The problems that scientists face are in the tentative theory stage. In this
stage, complications arise when the original problem is theoretical. To provide some tentative solution to the problem the scientist must first make
observations formulate a hypothesis, test it under controlled conditions, evaluate whether the tests adheres to the hypothesis, if it does not, then the
hypothesis is reformed and the process is repeated, however if it does hold true for that situation, then the scientist may put it forth for critical
evaluation by his peers. More often than not, the theory never passes the critical evaluation, thus P2 is essentially P1. Now the question is, 'How does
all this relate to the subjective nature of perception', and the answer is quite simple. Subjective knowledge, which was mentioned before, are personal
experiences, thus are biased, since they are formed through the perception of the world, which has a subjective nature. Since the knowledge has the
subjective nature to it, it

Knowledge Question: To what extent does our sense perception limit the way we perceive reality?
Word Count: 800
Knowledge is an extensive concept which has no precise definition since it has no end or limit. In a constantly changing world, several individuals
have different upbringings, prejudices, viewpoints and the way we perceive or understand certain things may be different from how they are in reality.
Firstly sense perception, in this case is simply what the eyes see, the nose smells, the ears hear or the body feels. Secondly, reality is not a subjective

Our senses help us gather and respond to information about our surroundings, which in turn aids our survival through our reciprocation to most sensory
information.Improvements in science have enhanced the quality of life for many people with sensory disabilities by providing things as alternative
methods of communication, increasing mobility and technology for sensory enhancement. For example, sound and smell has a strong influence in our
daily lives it increases our emotional quotient thus improving our productivity during work. Therefore, the way we perceive reality can be tied to our
emotions hence, sense perception in some ways can grow our perception of reality.
To conclude, I personally believe that sense perception is dependent on many external factors thus can limit the way we perceive reality and can
sometimes betray us or memory that influences our ways of knowing. Reality is altered everyday to some extent. However, we have become
intelligent enough to understand this idea over the decades, hence we can not let these things come in the way of truth. That is why we use reason and
logic and put aside our sense perceptions and try to see things not as they are but as we

process. Perception affects the way people communicate with others. An individual's pattern of thinking can affect their perception of others. Most
people communicate best with people of similar cultures.
The articles that I read discussed Social Perception. Social Perception was described as interpreting information about other people. If you feel that you

(3) First Impression error allows a lasting impression to be formed based on an initial meeting. This can be positive or negative. If you are going to a
job interview and the interviewer sees your appearance is neat and you are prepared of the interview, this could determine whether or not you are
chosen for the job. On the other hand if the interviewer sees that you are not dressed appropriately for the interview and are unprepared this could also
be a determining factor in whether or not you get the job.
(4) Projection allows believe that other people have similar beliefs. If you are a person who believes that all people are honest and truthful, projection
is the belief that others share the same truthfulness and honesty, and we know that is not true.
(5) Self– Fulfilling prophecy affects the outcome of expectations while interacting with others. An, example of this is President Bush convinced
Congress that invading Iraq would liberate the country and make the world a safer place, without knowing that it would make the Iraqi rebels feel that
we were occupying their country and trying to take control the oil.
Comparing ourselves to others to see how we measure up and using past experiences can effect perceptions that we have with others. There are many
processes that influence perception. Consciously deciding what information to pay attention to can influence many decisions we make. Understanding

Essay about Perceptions of Time in Great Gatsby
Time is an idea described in diverse periods and aspects, for example philosophical, psychological, physical and biological. This time flows
consistently but is broken into the past, present and future. Since we only live in the present forever in preparation for our futures and dreams, when
we try to live in the past it restricts our future. Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Gatsby wasted time and his life for a single
dream, and it was his illusion of his idyllic future that made time a key dimension in his life. Fitzgerald sees life in satiric–tragic dimensions, as a
contest between romantic illusion and coarse reality. The reality slowly and viciously disintegrates the illusion.

she was in the past. From Gatsby's illusions of the past preoccupying all his beliefs, he forgets about the key dimension he exists in which is the present.
Although Gatsby was unrelenting on reliving the past, Gatsby vaguely lived for the present. This is evident when he cancels his biology by
leaving home, changing his name, and leaving his heritage behind which was not done by following the past. In the past Jay Gatsby made a
platonic notion of himself. What Nick said about Gatsby's spiritual theory of himself was that Gatsby "...was a son of God?" (104). From Jay
Gatsby's hypothesis he makes an ideal conception of himself, of which he projects himself into the future. Eventually, Gatsby is left with the
choices to "...suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder," (117) or kiss Daisy and "...his mind would never romp again
like the mind of God". In Gatsby's choices he is to ascend "the ladder" to God which represents Gatsby's future, or choose Daisy and the past. Since
Gatsby idealized the past could be his future, from Gatsby's kissing Daisy, he is leaving his past perfect platonic conception of himself by choosing no
longer to have his mind think like the "mind of God". In conclusion, Jay Gatsby begins to make his future from his present even

Perception and Attention Essay
Perception and Attention Perception is a remarkable trait. Consider human vision, a two–dimensional array of light appears on the retina, which houses
the visual receptors. Instead of seeing a random collection of color dots, people immediately experience a rich, coherent, veridical, three–dimensional
perception of an object, person, or event Perhaps the most astounding fact is that this occurs immediately, mostly outside of conscious awareness
(Robinson–Riegler& Robinson–Riegler, 2008). Perception and attention are two independent mechanisms relevant to one another. Attention is the state
of focused awareness on a division of available perceptual information. This paper will explain the concept of perception, break down the perceptual

Define the concept of attention
Attention is the state of focused awareness on a division of available perceptual information. It is a system of the brain that is separate from the data
processing system. Attention is usually considered to have at least three aspects: orienting, filtering, and searching (Ward, 2008). These aspects can be
focused on a single information source or divided among several sources. Each of these aspects has specific properties of which complete operations on
systems that complete operations on specific inputs even when attention is in another place.
The attention method is different from any other sensory and motor systems. The Attention structure works together with other parts of the brain, but
maintains its own identity. Individuals' conscious attention is selective. Selective attention occurs the moment one focus his or her awareness on a
limited segment of all they are able of experiencing. Attention is an important feature because it connects the mental level of description processes used
in cognitive science with the anatomical in detail level common in neuroscience (Peterson &Postner, 1990).

Essay On Sensory Perceptions

  • 1. Essay on Sensory Perceptions Running head: SENSORY PERCEPTIONS1 Critical Thinking – PHI 210 "Sensory Perceptions" 9 July 2010 SENSORY PERCEPTIONS2 "Sensory Perceptions" The body's senses are the input devices of the human computer known as the brain. These senses, touch, sight, smell, sound and taste, are only as effective as the human brain can process the information. The accuracy of these inputs can easily be deceived when the senses conflict or not interpreted as intended. Like any other computer, the information being processed and stored is only as good as the information was input (garbage in, garbage out). Sensory information is almost always...show more content... The more sensors used, the more accurate the information is which can then be used in creating thoughts and memories. "The human capacity to perform real time information processing is limited. The limited speed of neuronal operations may partly be compensated for by parallel interactive and distributed processing" (Carlsson, Petrovic, Skare, Petersson & Ingvar, 2000, p. 681). There are many factors that can contribute to the accuracy or inaccuracy of sensor data. Our perception will influence the way we interpret sensor information. "Sharpening our perceptions is crucial for delivering better data to our brains" (Kirby & Goodpaster, 2007, p. 54). Personal deception and the realization that our senses can be deceived will affect the accuracy of that data. Once we accept that our senses are not perfect, we can then take steps to counter this deception or improve the accuracy obtained. Listening is probably the largest contributor to the accuracy of sensor data. We learn as we listen and this affects the final outcome in the long run as additional data is obtained that helps to refine the initial interpretation of the data. The roles of "Nature" and "Nurtured" with regard to the interpretation and evaluation of sensory data has been disputed by scholars for centuries. Some believe that we are born with information inherited Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Sense Perception Essay 'We see and understand things not as they are but as we are' Christopher Columbus, in the 1440's on his voyage to America, saw three mermaids and described them as insight of females who rose from the sea. Did Christopher Columbus Imagine the mermaids because he was interested in fantasies or did he actual see it? On one hand I do believe that we understand and see things not as they are but as we are, on the other hand disagree with this statement. The way we view things reflects on our personality and each of our personality is different and some people also have similar personality. "We do not see things the way they are but as we are" is said to be a Jewish proverb. The proverb talks about how we are engaged with sense perception. It...show more content... Emotions are of different types sad, happy, angry, cheerful and many more. Sometimes people have mixed emotions as well. We know emotions because we feel them and it tells us about what's going on in our mind. Our state of mind also depends on the way we view things. Each person has different ways of seeing things. Even though each person views things differently but one state of mind can make the person see things the same. When a person is sad then everything around him would be sad and would react in a manner, which would make everyone, upset. When a person is happy then the people around him would be happy. The way people view thing depends on emotion. If a person is sad then everyone about him could be sad. When many people are sad they could react the same way. In some ways abstract ideas could be viewed the same for everyone and each idea could make the person view things differently. Culture can play a very important role in the way we view things. Each culture has its own values and every culture is different from one another; they infer things as they are but on how it seems. In Indian culture no woman is allowed to work or to be exposed to the world around her but in America every woman has the freedom of rights. If Indians would see the American women then they would be ashamed of how America is, they understand and see things as they are and as their culture is. Culture also makes Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Introduction Sensation and Perception Sensations and Perceptions are related but total different concepts. A distinction has been made between sensations and perceptions. Thomas Reid (1758). The philosopher who made the original distinction between sensation and perception. He proposed that the crucial difference between the two terms was that perception always refers to external objects whereas sensations refers to experiences within a person that is not linked to external objects An example following Reid's way of distinguishing between sensation and perception world be say that if the light of a star we are sensing a tiny point of brightness as linked to an actual object such as the star or even if we mistake it for a firefly we are perceive...show more content... We are usually referring to the pinna. The funny looking structure that stick out from the sides of our hands. Pinna is the most part of theear that is important in helping us to locate sounds and is of great importance for those of us who wear eyeglasses or earrings. The major working of the ear is found inside the head, hidden from view. It is these hidden places inside the head that sound waves must travel before they are heard.in the first stage of their journey they pass through the outer ear which consist of pinna and the auditory canal, auditory canal is a tube–like structure about 3 cm long whose function is to protect the delicate structures of the middle ear from the hazards of the outside Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Perception And Perception Of Perception Imagine you are walking down the street; it is a beautiful, breezy day. You stop for a moment, you notice a tree. For some reason you find this tree to be very alluring. You can't help but stare as you attempt to capture this moment. You notice the way the light dances through the branches, the way the breeze catches each leaf, sending them into a blissful dance. The limbs move so freely throughout the crisp air. This expression of pure freedom and bliss etched upon the face of nature. It captivates you. Since the very moment that this tree captured your attention, perception has been at work. Perception has allowed for you to interpret this one particular occurrence and, in turn, experience life. The process of perception helps us to experience the world at large. It is our perceptions that make up our conscious experience and make it possible for us to interact with the people and objects that surround us. Perception, in psychological terms, can be defined as the process of organizing, interpreting, and selectively extracting sensory information from the world around us. It is through this process that we are able to experience all of our senses. The perceptual process refers not only to the recognition of a given stimulus but also the response we have to said stimuli. It is also through this process that we are able to further our understanding of the world around us and ultimately, survive. The perceptual process shapes our experiences and allows us to take part in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Perception of Others Essay Perception of Others There is no second chance for a first impression. Perception has never been random, since the beginning of time it has been human nature to judge others before really getting a chance to know them. People immediately cast others into stereotypes in every situation: they form a schema, or an organized set of thoughts about something containing properties and uses. These schemas effect the way people carry themselves around others. Schemas are usually formed with in eight seconds of getting the initial impression of a person. This by psychologists is know as the ?eight–second rule,? where people have been proven to form hypothesizes about others with in eight seconds of meeting or seeing an individual for the...show more content... seems to be very ?uncool? to say the least. His oversized plaid jacket, tight laced large sneakers, and tight jeans combining with his out of control curly hair and spectacles allow myself to automatically place ?the guy behind me? in a stereotype of nerds. The way he crosses his legs also leads me to believe he is one of those that probably enjoy computers and Dungeons & Dragons, yet for all I know this guy could be the best basketball player at Catawba. By his appearance I have already made assumptions about his lifestyle, or formed something referred to as Functional Association. After realizing the extent of judgement I cast on others, I began to contemplate if others would place me in certain stereotypes if I didn?t appear as I do; so, I decided to form my own experiment. I decided to make myself salient, or stand out, to better see my impressions on people. I began a three–day experiment where I would wear my not–so attractive glasses, a hooded sweatshirt, and Velcro shoes from Wal –Mart to dress like one would call a ?bum.? Of my many experiences of the weekend, three stood out from all the rest: my attendance at the soccer game, my trip to the Bar Charlotte nightclub, and being introduced to new friends. No girl in their right mind would dance with a guy with big ugly glasses. For we all know they have already formed something called an illusory correlation, or a memory of a negative or distasteful person or instance. Here I began to look at not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Example Of Perception Research Paper Your perception is how you see things, and basically what you think about them when you see them. For example, two people might see the same thing visually like for an example two individuals see an older man with a beard and ragged clothes on the street with a sign asking for money. Person one might perceive him as a lazy human being, and think he needs to get a job. And the other individual, on the other hand, might perceive him to be a guy who, through no fault of his own, needs help, and still deserves respect. Our perceptions are shaped by our upbringing mostly, and by what we are taught by others. Racism is another example of perception. It's all about what your "opinion" is when you see something.Everyone at least once in their life has judged or even stereotyped someone just by taking one look at their...show more content... I remember watching that show when I was younger and would always perceive a "geek" to look like that. But that's what movies and television shows do, they are known for stereotyping and with that other who aren't taught will also perceive and believe these stereotypes that these Hollywood films are showing.Perception and stereotypes is a massive problem that a lot of individuals of color are facing in a negative way. Both my parents being Hispanic they have had their experiences with stereotypes coming in their way that being people assuming that they cannot speak English and when they do speak English they get backhanded compliments saying that they were surprised that they speak "good English'. That's an example of what microaggression is, verbal, nonverbal, or insults whether they were intentional or unintentional. Being half Colombian from my mother's side I have heard so many stereotypes about how Colombians are drug dealers. Everyone knows who Pablo Escobar is. However, what he isn't is a fair representation of all Colombians. Not everyone in Colombia is a coke trafficker or drug lord. Also, shocking fact, coke is not even legal in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Reflection About Perception Perception changes everything; absolutely everything, from the tiniest little details to the life shaking decisions. It's one of the integral building blocks of life, and it's the main difference between things. The difference between how something is viewed, object or person, is the perception it holds. Now in my life this concept is quite interesting to behold. While I am still a school student, my perception is very different from my peers. This comes from ten years of doing English at home. Yes, I am talking about homeschool. I was homeschooled from the very beginning all the way up to the start of Senior English, Grade Ten. When I walked in the door of Miss Palmer's English class for the very first time, I was in awe. While I had done English my whole life there was something different about learning the curriculum in a whole class setting rather than just by myself. In these classes, I have learned many different things in regards to the English language and how it is used to give insight into our world around us. Some of the techniques I learned related to those of representations, intertextuality and positioning. All of these are aspects of Metalanguage. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that they have changed my life. From walking in that door, my perception changed, my eyes had been opened to the intricate details that are a part of Senior English. From my plethora of film and literature knowledge, intertextuality was an immediate connection. Connections Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. sensory perception Essay Sensory Perceptions Critical Thinking Professor Naomi Sanderovsky Raquiera Wilkerson April 23, 2014 "There is nothing in our mind unless it is first in the senses" –Aquinas Throughout our life senses have enriched our brains; they currently play a part with our brain as we think. As powerful as our senses are, they do not always transfer accurate data to the brain. Especially when we are sick, tired or confused, our senses are even more deceiving to us. Our sensual perception can deceive our brain in three ways: limited biologically, superficially and custom. (Kirby/Goodpaster, 2007) There are factors that influence the accuracy of information received by human senses and how it affects the perception...show more content... We could not know anything without the use of sensory perception. There is on the other hand, the possibility to gain knowledge by only using sensory perception. In this case whatever you know you have experienced yourself. Yet the knowledge gained from purely sensory perception is in my opinion not quite reliable. I believe this due to several reasons. (Goldstein, 2010) If we speak about knowledge then we are speaking of what we as a society have accepted as knowledge. If only one person believes something to be true then that is their opinion. We know how others experience their sensory perception. Sensory perception is something which every individual might see different. Another factor which influence to what extent sensory perception is an accurate way of knowing is the fact that the brain wants to simplify things in order to understand them. From a personal stand point, I believe our sensory perception can lead us on the right path but to every positive there is a negative. Our emotions also play a big part along with our senses and brain. If your emotions are all over the place the mind and senses will be too. As a conclusion I believe that sensory perception as a way of knowing is very unreliable. I believe that sensory perception is too dependent on the human brain. As I explained before, we do need sensory perception and therefore it is reliable to a certain extent. We cannot use sensory perception as our only direct way of knowing but we can use it as a

  • 10. Visual Perception Essay Visual Perception Any one given experience an organism perceives must incorporate several sensory systems, that involves numerous number of organs , that further more are comprised of millions upon millions of firing cells. Perception is not a direct mirroring of stimulus, but a complex chaotic patterns dependent on the simultaneously activity of neurons. This essay deals primarily with neurons from the optical sensory system. The outer ridge of the brain, known as the cerebral cortex begins the analysis of sensory messages. (1) Nevertheless, visual perception is possibly more widespread than one area of the cerebral cortex and like ly over various subcortical structures and number of different systems as well. (2) One of the many...show more content... However, there are many gaps within the course, which cannot possibly fully formulate the sense of perception. Not only are there missing intermediatary, but there is outside activity happening simultaneously along this path. As discussed in lecture, the retina sends (5 to 10) different information activities to different parts of the brain. Neural data may be taken to the midbrain instead to the dicephalo n. The dicephalon consists the lateral geniculate, which consists the visual occipital cortex. The complex midbrain is made up of other complex parts such as the superior collicus and the optic tectrum. The optic tectrum is then made up of more complex in tricate parts, such as the protectal nucleus and the basal optic nerve. Once again, the organization and specificity of complex within complex come into play. As seen here there are parallel simultaneous paths that are activated or inactivated due to spec ific retina information. Neurologists, Sheinberg and Logothetis studied macaque monkey responses to different visual imputs. (3) They tested the difference between one image fixed on one eye and one image fixed on one eye accompanie d with a flash of a second image on the other eye. Tests show that former test did not always evoke effective stimulus, while the latter test yields 90% effective stimulus. • 11. Extra Sensory Perception Essay Extra Sensory Perception Have you ever had the feeling that you've been in an establishment before you've actually gone inside? Did you ever feel like you've known that something was about to happen before there were any signs that it was about to occur? If you're not a skeptic about the powers of the mind, then there might just be an explanation for your seemingly coincidental premonitions. It's a phenomenon called extra sensory perception, better known as ESP. The textbook definition of this classification of parapsychology is "sensing" anything beyond the normal.(www.paranormalatoz.com) Most scientists do not believe that this phenomenon exists. Nevertheless, controversial evidence can be used to sway the incredulous. By viewing and...show more content... The actual term extra sensory perception wasn't used until the early 1930's. During this time an American scientist, Joseph Banks Rhine first began his ground breaking experiments testing ESP's validity.(Encarta) His research was conducted at the Parapsychology Laboratory of North Carolina's, Duke University.(Encarta) Rhine's most well–known experiment involved a deck of twenty–five cards. On the cards, written in heavy black ink, each card had a different design on them. The designs included a star, a cross, a square, or wavy lines.(Encarta) The concealed deck of twenty–five cards was shuffled. One random card was drawn from the deck at a time and the test subject was asked to identify the hidden marking on the flip–side of the card. If the test subject correctly identified five out of twenty five cards correctly, it was considered pure chance.(Encarta) Rhine and his associates concluded that if the individual named six out of ten of the cards correctly, then indeed the test subject possessed extra sensory perception.(Encarta) From his experimentally proved evidence, it can easily be seen which stand Rhine took on the controversial existence of ESP. However, not all scientists had acknowledged the authenticity of his trials and the legitimacy of this branch of pseudo–science called parapsychology. Certain scientists do not believe in the reality of extrasensory perception due to their lack of faith in the experiments that test it's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Perception vs Reality Damion Stone Are Some Decisions Base on: Perception or Reality? Have you ever thought you heard something, but there was nothing there? Have you ever thought you saw someone in the corner of your eye, and when you looked there was no person there? When we look down from a high building on people, do they appear small like ants? Aren't there thousands of occasions when we do misperceive? What is reality and perception? Mainstream science describes reality as "the state of things as they actually exist". So reality is simply: everything we observe. Perception is the process by which organisms interpret and organize sensation to produce a meaningful experience of the world (sapdesignguild.org np). This is the first time I am involved in a situation of being accused of plagiarism. Therefore, I add it as a mark in my learning and life experiences. I am currently a student at a particular university, working hard to get good grades so as to leave with two concentrations in business. Let me share an example with my readers of an event that occurred in my life. I was accused of plagiarism. I had the choice as to how I am going to respond to it. (I use this example because it is something I have been through). I know for a fact that I did not plagiarize, and I was willing to make the truth be a reality. I can choose to see the event as something terrible and unfair to which I will respond accordingly. Or I can choose to see the event as something that will inspire me to make something more of my life, to try my best to resolve it as soon as possible, and hope I will never find myself getting trapped in this situation ever again. My teacher thought my final paper was similar in ideas to another person's in content and structure. Therefore, she grades me down from an A to a C plus, because of suspicion of plagiarism. That was because of her perception of me, and of life which also became her reality. It did not make it reality for me and my reality was very different from hers. From this example I can see that I did not have control over Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Psychology : Sensation And Perception Essay 1.Define sensation and perception. How do sensation and perception differ from cognition? How might sensation and perception be related to cognition? a.Although sensation and perception are closely related, it is very important to understand the difference between the two. Sensation is the process of sensing our environment using our different sensory systems. There are four different systems: visual, auditory, cutaneous, and chemical. The information we acquire through sensation is then sent to our brains. This is where the two now link together. Perception is the way that we interpret that information from our senses in order for it to mean anything. Simply put, perceiving is believing. Perception differs from person to person. Using color as an example, the color "green" to one person may be different to another person. Cognition is not the same as perception but they are directly linked to one another as well. Simplest way to explain cognition is the word thinking. Cognition involves our thought processes and how we store information. 90% of what we see is lost by the time it reaches our brain. This means that we combine our visual information with information previously stored in our brain. So without the information from cognition, perception and sensation would not be the same. 2.Describe the Gestalt Approach to sensation and perception. How does it differ from the Empiricist Approach? a.The Gestalt Approach, which came from German psychologists, believes that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Essay On Perception In Hamlet Perception in Hamlet Essay "There is no truth. There is only perception." a knowledgeable quote by French novelist, Gustave Flaubert, discussing how humans perceive things versus reality. Perception is how one interprets the world and its individuals through their own knowledge and experiences; therefore, there is a diverse amount of viewpoints on the same subjects and people. As a result, those who are capable of perceiving situations accomplish more than those who are incapable. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare develops the theme that those who are incapable of perceiving others leads to punishment, however, those who successfully perceive are rewarded. This theme can be proven through three major characters: Claudius, the main antagonist, Gertrude, the mother of the main character, and Hamlet, the main character. These characters portray both successful and failed attempts of perception throughout the play. Claudius has experienced failed and successful perception that has left massive impacts in his life. An example of how failed perception caused suffering happens when Claudius attends the play, "The Murder of Gonzago", where Hamlet jokingly calls "The Mouse–Trap" and fails to see it as a trap Hamlet has staged for him. Hamlet has set up the play to receive a reaction from Claudius therefore confirming he was the one who murdered Old King Hamlet, his own brother. Due to this failed perception of the play's true intentions, Claudius seems to be quite upset about the play Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Perception And Perception Of Perception The term friendship is defined as a mutual strand of affection between two or more people. It is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. It is a link between people who show trust and altruism with one another without the placement of sexual or physical intimacy that commonly happens in a romantic relationship. Friends tend to share common interests, demographics, backgrounds, and traits of the self. However, before we get to know a person, we use perception to categorize them into a certain role. It often causes us to assume that the other party is superior or inferior to us. We do this more often than not without even realizing we've engaged in perception. Perception played a very large part in the first meeting of my best friend, Cinda, and I. In Chapter 4: Interpersonal Perception (Floyd, 2011), there are many examples of the ways in which people instantly perceive another person as being one way or another. This exact thing happened when I met Cinda. Our perceptions of one another were not complimentary or nice, in fact, we were practically enemies at the time. Negativity bias, or the tendency to weigh negative information more heavily than positive (Floyd, 2011), would describe what we felt with each other. We were unable to see anything good or complimentary about the other. What exactly brought on these feelings? One might ask. Well, embarrassingly enough, it all started with a boy; Cinda and I had never even spoke to each other. Ironically Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Essay on The Perception of the Perception The Perception of the Perception The subjective nature of perception is an inborn characteristic humanity. However, humans found the ability to still classify knowledge under two categories, objective and subjective. Knowledge in the subjective sense, or subjective knowledge for short, is the individual knowledge that each person gains through personal experiences. Artists often try to portray a scene that has an emotional and psychological effect on the viewer, by drawing on their own experiences and thoughts. However, scientists are interested in developing the former type of knowledge, knowledge in the objective sense. Objective knowledge is subjective knowledge which has passed through...show more content... Sir Karl outlined this process in a tetradic schema illustrated below: P1 Г TT Г EE Г P2 In this process, P1 is the original problem, practical or theoretical, TT is the tentative theory that is offered to solve the problem, EE is the "error elimination" where it is critically tested, and finally P2 is the problems that are left over and those which are created by this process. The problems that scientists face are in the tentative theory stage. In this stage, complications arise when the original problem is theoretical. To provide some tentative solution to the problem the scientist must first make observations formulate a hypothesis, test it under controlled conditions, evaluate whether the tests adheres to the hypothesis, if it does not, then the hypothesis is reformed and the process is repeated, however if it does hold true for that situation, then the scientist may put it forth for critical evaluation by his peers. More often than not, the theory never passes the critical evaluation, thus P2 is essentially P1. Now the question is, 'How does all this relate to the subjective nature of perception', and the answer is quite simple. Subjective knowledge, which was mentioned before, are personal experiences, thus are biased, since they are formed through the perception of the world, which has a subjective nature. Since the knowledge has the subjective nature to it, it Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Knowledge Question: To what extent does our sense perception limit the way we perceive reality? Word Count: 800 Knowledge is an extensive concept which has no precise definition since it has no end or limit. In a constantly changing world, several individuals have different upbringings, prejudices, viewpoints and the way we perceive or understand certain things may be different from how they are in reality. Firstly sense perception, in this case is simply what the eyes see, the nose smells, the ears hear or the body feels. Secondly, reality is not a subjective knowledge, but rather an objective one....show more content... Our senses help us gather and respond to information about our surroundings, which in turn aids our survival through our reciprocation to most sensory information.Improvements in science have enhanced the quality of life for many people with sensory disabilities by providing things as alternative methods of communication, increasing mobility and technology for sensory enhancement. For example, sound and smell has a strong influence in our daily lives it increases our emotional quotient thus improving our productivity during work. Therefore, the way we perceive reality can be tied to our emotions hence, sense perception in some ways can grow our perception of reality. To conclude, I personally believe that sense perception is dependent on many external factors thus can limit the way we perceive reality and can sometimes betray us or memory that influences our ways of knowing. Reality is altered everyday to some extent. However, we have become intelligent enough to understand this idea over the decades, hence we can not let these things come in the way of truth. That is why we use reason and logic and put aside our sense perceptions and try to see things not as they are but as we Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Perception affects the way people communicate with others. An individual's pattern of thinking can affect their perception of others. Most people communicate best with people of similar cultures. The articles that I read discussed Social Perception. Social Perception was described as interpreting information about other people. On the other hand if the interviewer sees that you are not dressed appropriately for the interview and are unprepared this could also be a determining factor in whether or not you get the job. If you are a person who believes that all people are honest and truthful, projection is the belief that others share the same truthfulness and honesty, and we know that is not true. • 19. Essay about Perceptions of Time in Great Gatsby Time is an idea described in diverse periods and aspects, for example philosophical, psychological, physical and biological. This time flows consistently but is broken into the past, present and future. Since we only live in the present forever in preparation for our futures and dreams, when we try to live in the past it restricts our future. Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Gatsby wasted time and his life for a single dream, and it was his illusion of his idyllic future that made time a key dimension in his life. Fitzgerald sees life in satiric–tragic dimensions, as a contest between romantic illusion and coarse reality. The reality slowly and viciously disintegrates the illusion. From Gatsby's illusions of the past preoccupying all his beliefs, he forgets about the key dimension he exists in which is the present. Although Gatsby was unrelenting on reliving the past, Gatsby vaguely lived for the present. This is evident when he cancels his biology by leaving home, changing his name, and leaving his heritage behind which was not done by following the past. In the past Jay Gatsby made a platonic notion of himself. What Nick said about Gatsby's spiritual theory of himself was that Gatsby "...was a son of God?" (104). From Jay Gatsby's hypothesis he makes an ideal conception of himself, of which he projects himself into the future. Eventually, Gatsby is left with the choices to "...suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder," (117) or kiss Daisy and "...his mind would never romp again like the mind of God". In Gatsby's choices he is to ascend "the ladder" to God which represents Gatsby's future, or choose Daisy and the past. Since Gatsby idealized the past could be his future, from Gatsby's kissing Daisy, he is leaving his past perfect platonic conception of himself by choosing no longer to have his mind think like the "mind of God". In conclusion, Jay Gatsby begins to make his future from his present even Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Perception and Attention Essay Perception and Attention Perception is a remarkable trait. Consider human vision, a two–dimensional array of light appears on the retina, which houses the visual receptors. Instead of seeing a random collection of color dots, people immediately experience a rich, coherent, veridical, three–dimensional perception of an object, person, or event Perhaps the most astounding fact is that this occurs immediately, mostly outside of conscious awareness (Robinson–Riegler& Robinson–Riegler, 2008). Perception and attention are two independent mechanisms relevant to one another. Attention is the state of focused awareness on a division of available perceptual information. Other components are depth effect, time effect, and anti–regularity (Plhakova, 2008). Define the concept of attention Attention is the state of focused awareness on a division of available perceptual information. It is a system of the brain that is separate from the data processing system. Attention is usually considered to have at least three aspects: orienting, filtering, and searching (Ward, 2008). These aspects can be focused on a single information source or divided among several sources. Each of these aspects has specific properties of which complete operations on systems that complete operations on specific inputs even when attention is in another place. The attention method is different from any other sensory and motor systems. The Attention structure works together with other parts of the brain, but maintains its own identity. Individuals' conscious attention is selective. Selective attention occurs the moment one focus his or her awareness on a limited segment of all they are able of experiencing. Attention is an important feature because it connects the mental level of description processes used in cognitive science with the anatomical in detail level common in neuroscience (Peterson &Postner, 1990).
