Perceptions
Why are the perceptions you have of your skills usually different from the perceptions that others have of your skills
Why Do Differences in Perception Occur?
The way you sense the world–the way you see, hear, smell, touch, and taste–is subjective, uniquely your own. Nobody else sees the world the way you
do, and nobody experiences events exactly as you do. The uniqueness of human experience is based largely on differences in perception–"the process of
becoming aware of objects and events from the senses" (DeVito, 1986)
Perception is subjective, active, and creative. Active perception means that your mind selects, organizes, and interprets that which yousense. So each
person is a different video camera, and each person aims the...show more content...
Roles also tend to change with context: in your parents' home you are a son or daughter; in your own home you may be a roommate or a mother or
father; in the classroom you are a student; and at work you may be an editor or a manager.
Culture and Co–culture
The ways people greet each other, position themselves when they talk, and even eat and sleep are all influenced by culture. An intercultural
communication researcher, maintains that what people see, hear, taste, touch, and smell is conditioned by their culture. He says that people's
perceptions are largely learned; the greater the experiential differences among people, the greater the disparity in their perceptions. Conversely, the
more similar their backgrounds, the more similarly they perceive the world.
People from different cultures and different countries perceive communication differently. American speakers who are accustomed to a certain level of
feedback might find audiences in Finland and Norway to be inexpressive.
To complicate matters further, your co–culture also affects your perceptions of the world. Women and men, for example, tend to see the world
differently, to communicate about it differently, and even to practice and perceive communication itself differently. Women tend to see talk as
relational, as a way to share and understand feelings, whereas men tend to see talk as instrumental, as a way to

The Phenomenon of Perception Essay
The Phenomenon of Perception
It's impossible to decipher how other people view your image. It's a hypothesis, an educated guess. Projected images can sometimes be misunderstood,
viewed as negative, self–serving transparencies. In my experience a large segment of the population attempts to portray a false image of someone
they are not, but someone they would like to emulate. Without a solid relationship with someone, it can be difficult to decide if their image is real or
delusional. I have been conscious of self image since my youth. My life has provided me with many challenges and opportunities that have resulted in
the evolution of my image that has transitioned from a rebellious teenager to a 55–year–old displaced worker going back...show more content...
Though shy around girls, I caught on quickly. I tried to project an image of self confidence and assuredness that I would become successful someday.
I decided to cut my long hair and start shaving daily. I worked part–time in high school and saved enough money to buy a car. It was a foreign sports
car – a bright red convertible. I was sure it was perfect for my new image. There was one small problem. I was viewed as a hippie and a jock – an odd
combination, but image–wise, I seemed to make it work. I tend to look at the similarities in people rather than the differences. I was drawn to both
groups and had their acceptance. Throughout high school my outward image was ever–changing. I wore my hair long, ponytail or dreadlocks. I wore
my hair short, sometimes shaved or Mohawk style. I dressed up, I dressed casual. I never wanted my image to be stereotyped. When I graduated
from high school, I made plans to attend college. I chose a university out of town. I had friends who were already enrolled. I made plans to join a
fraternity and mold my new image. My plans changed abruptly. My father died suddenly from a heart defect. I chose to postpone college and help
take care of my family. My image changed from a self confident, fun–loving, free spirit to a confused powerless teenager. I tried to keep up appearances
during this difficult time, but I wasn't having much luck. When my life returned to a state of semi–normalcy, I was emotionally drained. I turned to

Perception and Attention Essay
Perception and Attention Perception is a remarkable trait. Consider human vision, a two–dimensional array of light appears on the retina, which houses
the visual receptors. Instead of seeing a random collection of color dots, people immediately experience a rich, coherent, veridical, three–dimensional
perception of an object, person, or event Perhaps the most astounding fact is that this occurs immediately, mostly outside of conscious awareness
(Robinson–Riegler& Robinson–Riegler, 2008). Perception and attention are two independent mechanisms relevant to one another. Attention is the state
of focused awareness on a division of available perceptual information. This paper will explain the concept of perception, break down the perceptual

The example focuses on objects that include the depth of a set of stimulus elements perceived as one object, and visual regularity as a component in the
perception organization process. Other components are depth effect, time effect, and anti–regularity (Plhakova, 2008).
Define the concept of attention
Attention is the state of focused awareness on a division of available perceptual information. It is a system of the brain that is separate from the data
processing system. Attention is usually considered to have at least three aspects: orienting, filtering, and searching (Ward, 2008). These aspects can be
focused on a single information source or divided among several sources. Each of these aspects has specific properties of which complete operations on
systems that complete operations on specific inputs even when attention is in another place.
The attention method is different from any other sensory and motor systems. The Attention structure works together with other parts of the brain, but
maintains its own identity. Individuals' conscious attention is selective. Selective attention occurs the moment one focus his or her awareness on a
limited segment of all they are able of experiencing. Attention is an important feature because it connects the mental level of description processes used
in cognitive science with the anatomical in detail level common in neuroscience (Peterson &Postner, 1990).

Perception Essay
PERCEPTION
Perception is defined as how you look at others and the world around you. Being able to select, organize and intercept information starts the perceptual
process. Perception affects the way people communicate with others. An individual's pattern of thinking can affect their perception of others. Most
people communicate best with people of similar cultures.
The articles that I read discussed Social Perception. Social Perception was described as interpreting information about other people. If you feel that you
are familiar with a person, you perceive to have a better understanding of that person intention. The pattern of thinking can affect a person's perception
of others. The social contexts, in which you meet someone, can play a...show more content...
(3) First Impression error allows a lasting impression to be formed based on an initial meeting. This can be positive or negative. If you are going to a
job interview and the interviewer sees your appearance is neat and you are prepared of the interview, this could determine whether or not you are
chosen for the job. On the other hand if the interviewer sees that you are not dressed appropriately for the interview and are unprepared this could also
be a determining factor in whether or not you get the job.
(4) Projection allows believe that other people have similar beliefs. If you are a person who believes that all people are honest and truthful, projection
is the belief that others share the same truthfulness and honesty, and we know that is not true.
(5) Self– Fulfilling prophecy affects the outcome of expectations while interacting with others. An, example of this is President Bush convinced
Congress that invading Iraq would liberate the country and make the world a safer place, without knowing that it would make the Iraqi rebels feel that
we were occupying their country and trying to take control the oil.
Comparing ourselves to others to see how we measure up and using past experiences can effect perceptions that we have with others. There are many
processes that influence perception. Consciously deciding what information to pay attention to can influence many decisions we make. Understanding

Sensory Perceptions
Critical Thinking

"There is nothing in our mind unless it is first in the senses"
–Aquinas
Throughout our life senses have enriched our brains; they currently play a part with our brain as we think. As powerful as our senses are, they do not
always transfer accurate data to the brain. Especially when we are sick, tired or confused, our senses are even more deceiving to us. Our sensual
perception can deceive our brain in three ways: limited biologically, superficially and custom. (Kirby/Goodpaster, 2007)
There are factors that influence the accuracy of information received by human senses and how it affects the perception...show more content...
We could not know anything without the use of sensory perception. There is on the other hand, the possibility to gain knowledge by only using
sensory perception. In this case whatever you know you have experienced yourself. Yet the knowledge gained from purely sensory perception is in my
opinion not quite reliable. I believe this due to several reasons. (Goldstein, 2010)
If we speak about knowledge then we are speaking of what we as a society have accepted as knowledge. If only one person believes something to be
true then that is their opinion. We know how others experience their sensory perception. Sensory perception is something which every individual might
see different. Another factor which influence to what extent sensory perception is an accurate way of knowing is the fact that the brain wants to
simplify things in order to understand them.
From a personal stand point, I believe our sensory perception can lead us on the right path but to every positive there is a negative. Our emotions also
play a big part along with our senses and brain. If your emotions are all over the place the mind and senses will be too.
As a conclusion I believe that sensory perception as a way of knowing is very unreliable. I believe that sensory perception is too dependent on the
human brain. As I explained before, we do need sensory perception and therefore it is reliable to a certain extent. We cannot use sensory perception as
our only direct way of knowing but we can use it as a

Visual Perception Essay
Visual Perception
Any one given experience an organism perceives must incorporate several sensory systems, that involves numerous number of organs , that further
more are comprised of millions upon millions of firing cells. Perception is not a direct mirroring of stimulus, but a complex chaotic patterns dependent
on the simultaneously activity of neurons. This essay deals primarily with neurons from the optical sensory system. The outer ridge of the brain, known
as the cerebral cortex begins the analysis of sensory messages. (1) Nevertheless, visual perception is possibly more widespread than one area of the
cerebral cortex and like ly over various subcortical structures and number of different systems as well. (2) One of the many...show more content...
However, there are many gaps within the course, which cannot possibly fully formulate the sense of perception. Not only are there missing
intermediatary, but there is outside activity happening simultaneously along this path. As discussed in lecture, the retina sends (5 to 10) different
information activities to different parts of the brain. Neural data may be taken to the midbrain instead to the dicephalo n. The dicephalon consists the
lateral geniculate, which consists the visual occipital cortex. The complex midbrain is made up of other complex parts such as the superior collicus
and the optic tectrum. The optic tectrum is then made up of more complex in tricate parts, such as the protectal nucleus and the basal optic nerve. Once
again, the organization and specificity of complex within complex come into play. As seen here there are parallel simultaneous paths that are activated
or inactivated due to spec ific retina information.
Neurologists, Sheinberg and Logothetis studied macaque monkey responses to different visual imputs. (3) They tested the difference between one
image fixed on one eye and one image fixed on one eye accompanie d with a flash of a second image on the other eye. Tests show that former test did
not always evoke effective stimulus, while the latter test yields 90% effective stimulus. Activity is taken from superior temporal sulcus (STS) and the

Examples Of Perception
What is perception?
It is the process of recognizing and interpreting sensory stimuli.
Perception is how you can see the world around you, how you experience the world around. There are two things that are included in perception. The
first is the environment that you are in and how that stimulates the senses of recognition. The second is how you respond to the environment and what
action is taken in and how you respond to the information you are taking in.
Perception includes five senses:
1.Touch.
2.Sight.
3.Taste.
4.Smell.
5.Sound.
Think of how you can remember a friend's face or a particular smell. Or even a song played will bring back an old memory. Perception allows you to
take what is sensory information from your environment and then use that information to interact or react...show more content...
The biggest example of this for this generation is Brain training games/Applications widely available over the last 5–10 years. The understanding that
the brain could be enhanced and trained to be better, think faster and learn quicker. The speed of your reactions to different actions and
circumstances play a large part in your everyday life. Fast reaction times can produce big rewards, for example, you're a goalkeeper in a soccer match
and you end up saving a blistering soccer ball from entering the goal. In this instant slow reaction times may come with consequences.
When the goalkeeper realizes the ball is blistering towards them, there is visual information that has to be processed and decisions regarding a correct
course of action. The brain then needs to send many signals to various muscles. Feet begin to move, body stands taller, hands might travel in front of
the face, and eyes may close shut suddenly, along with many more processes. This is the work of many neurons as well as numerous systems and
circuits in the brain, and what's more, and you can train and enhance your skill through practice.
What is semantic encoding and

Perceptions

  • 1. Perceptions Why are the perceptions you have of your skills usually different from the perceptions that others have of your skills Why Do Differences in Perception Occur? The way you sense the world–the way you see, hear, smell, touch, and taste–is subjective, uniquely your own. Nobody else sees the world the way you do, and nobody experiences events exactly as you do. The uniqueness of human experience is based largely on differences in perception–"the process of becoming aware of objects and events from the senses" (DeVito, 1986) Perception is subjective, active, and creative. Active perception means that your mind selects, organizes, and interprets that which yousense. So each person is a different video camera, and each person aims the...show more content... Roles also tend to change with context: in your parents' home you are a son or daughter; in your own home you may be a roommate or a mother or father; in the classroom you are a student; and at work you may be an editor or a manager. Culture and Co–culture The ways people greet each other, position themselves when they talk, and even eat and sleep are all influenced by culture. An intercultural communication researcher, maintains that what people see, hear, taste, touch, and smell is conditioned by their culture. He says that people's perceptions are largely learned; the greater the experiential differences among people, the greater the disparity in their perceptions. Conversely, the more similar their backgrounds, the more similarly they perceive the world. People from different cultures and different countries perceive communication differently. American speakers who are accustomed to a certain level of feedback might find audiences in Finland and Norway to be inexpressive. To complicate matters further, your co–culture also affects your perceptions of the world. Women and men, for example, tend to see the world differently, to communicate about it differently, and even to practice and perceive communication itself differently. Women tend to see talk as relational, as a way to share and understand feelings, whereas men tend to see talk as instrumental, as a way to

  • 3. The Phenomenon of Perception Essay The Phenomenon of Perception It's impossible to decipher how other people view your image. It's a hypothesis, an educated guess. Projected images can sometimes be misunderstood, viewed as negative, self–serving transparencies. In my experience a large segment of the population attempts to portray a false image of someone they are not, but someone they would like to emulate. Without a solid relationship with someone, it can be difficult to decide if their image is real or delusional. I have been conscious of self image since my youth. My life has provided me with many challenges and opportunities that have resulted in the evolution of my image that has transitioned from a rebellious teenager to a 55–year–old displaced worker going back...show more content... Though shy around girls, I caught on quickly. I tried to project an image of self confidence and assuredness that I would become successful someday. I decided to cut my long hair and start shaving daily. I worked part–time in high school and saved enough money to buy a car. It was a foreign sports car – a bright red convertible. I was sure it was perfect for my new image. There was one small problem. I was viewed as a hippie and a jock – an odd combination, but image–wise, I seemed to make it work. I tend to look at the similarities in people rather than the differences. I was drawn to both groups and had their acceptance. Throughout high school my outward image was ever–changing. I wore my hair long, ponytail or dreadlocks. I wore my hair short, sometimes shaved or Mohawk style. I dressed up, I dressed casual. I never wanted my image to be stereotyped. When I graduated from high school, I made plans to attend college. I chose a university out of town. I had friends who were already enrolled. I made plans to join a fraternity and mold my new image. My plans changed abruptly. My father died suddenly from a heart defect. I chose to postpone college and help take care of my family. My image changed from a self confident, fun–loving, free spirit to a confused powerless teenager. I tried to keep up appearances during this difficult time, but I wasn't having much luck. When my life returned to a state of semi–normalcy, I was emotionally drained. I turned to drugs and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Perception and Attention Essay Perception and Attention Perception is a remarkable trait. Consider human vision, a two–dimensional array of light appears on the retina, which houses the visual receptors. Instead of seeing a random collection of color dots, people immediately experience a rich, coherent, veridical, three–dimensional perception of an object, person, or event Perhaps the most astounding fact is that this occurs immediately, mostly outside of conscious awareness (Robinson–Riegler& Robinson–Riegler, 2008). Perception and attention are two independent mechanisms relevant to one another. Attention is the state of focused awareness on a division of available perceptual information. This paper will explain the concept of perception, break down the perceptual ...show more content... The example focuses on objects that include the depth of a set of stimulus elements perceived as one object, and visual regularity as a component in the perception organization process. Other components are depth effect, time effect, and anti–regularity (Plhakova, 2008). Define the concept of attention Attention is the state of focused awareness on a division of available perceptual information. It is a system of the brain that is separate from the data processing system. Attention is usually considered to have at least three aspects: orienting, filtering, and searching (Ward, 2008). These aspects can be focused on a single information source or divided among several sources. Each of these aspects has specific properties of which complete operations on systems that complete operations on specific inputs even when attention is in another place. The attention method is different from any other sensory and motor systems. The Attention structure works together with other parts of the brain, but maintains its own identity. Individuals' conscious attention is selective. Selective attention occurs the moment one focus his or her awareness on a limited segment of all they are able of experiencing. Attention is an important feature because it connects the mental level of description processes used in cognitive science with the anatomical in detail level common in neuroscience (Peterson &Postner, 1990). • 5. Perception Essay PERCEPTION Perception is defined as how you look at others and the world around you. Being able to select, organize and intercept information starts the perceptual process. Perception affects the way people communicate with others. An individual's pattern of thinking can affect their perception of others. Most people communicate best with people of similar cultures. The articles that I read discussed Social Perception. Social Perception was described as interpreting information about other people. If you feel that you are familiar with a person, you perceive to have a better understanding of that person intention. The pattern of thinking can affect a person's perception of others. The social contexts, in which you meet someone, can play a...show more content... (3) First Impression error allows a lasting impression to be formed based on an initial meeting. This can be positive or negative. If you are going to a job interview and the interviewer sees your appearance is neat and you are prepared of the interview, this could determine whether or not you are chosen for the job. On the other hand if the interviewer sees that you are not dressed appropriately for the interview and are unprepared this could also be a determining factor in whether or not you get the job. (4) Projection allows believe that other people have similar beliefs. If you are a person who believes that all people are honest and truthful, projection is the belief that others share the same truthfulness and honesty, and we know that is not true. (5) Self– Fulfilling prophecy affects the outcome of expectations while interacting with others. An, example of this is President Bush convinced Congress that invading Iraq would liberate the country and make the world a safer place, without knowing that it would make the Iraqi rebels feel that we were occupying their country and trying to take control the oil. Comparing ourselves to others to see how we measure up and using past experiences can effect perceptions that we have with others. There are many processes that influence perception. Consciously deciding what information to pay attention to can influence many decisions we make. Understanding different cultures and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. sensory perception Essay Sensory Perceptions Critical Thinking Professor Naomi Sanderovsky Raquiera Wilkerson April 23, 2014 "There is nothing in our mind unless it is first in the senses" –Aquinas Throughout our life senses have enriched our brains; they currently play a part with our brain as we think. As powerful as our senses are, they do not always transfer accurate data to the brain. Especially when we are sick, tired or confused, our senses are even more deceiving to us. Our sensual perception can deceive our brain in three ways: limited biologically, superficially and custom. (Kirby/Goodpaster, 2007) There are factors that influence the accuracy of information received by human senses and how it affects the perception...show more content... We could not know anything without the use of sensory perception. There is on the other hand, the possibility to gain knowledge by only using sensory perception. In this case whatever you know you have experienced yourself. Yet the knowledge gained from purely sensory perception is in my opinion not quite reliable. I believe this due to several reasons. (Goldstein, 2010) If we speak about knowledge then we are speaking of what we as a society have accepted as knowledge. If only one person believes something to be true then that is their opinion. We know how others experience their sensory perception. Sensory perception is something which every individual might see different. Another factor which influence to what extent sensory perception is an accurate way of knowing is the fact that the brain wants to simplify things in order to understand them. From a personal stand point, I believe our sensory perception can lead us on the right path but to every positive there is a negative. Our emotions also play a big part along with our senses and brain. If your emotions are all over the place the mind and senses will be too. As a conclusion I believe that sensory perception as a way of knowing is very unreliable. I believe that sensory perception is too dependent on the human brain. As I explained before, we do need sensory perception and therefore it is reliable to a certain extent. We cannot use sensory perception as our only direct way of knowing but we can use it as a

  • 8. Visual Perception Essay Visual Perception Any one given experience an organism perceives must incorporate several sensory systems, that involves numerous number of organs , that further more are comprised of millions upon millions of firing cells. Perception is not a direct mirroring of stimulus, but a complex chaotic patterns dependent on the simultaneously activity of neurons. This essay deals primarily with neurons from the optical sensory system. The outer ridge of the brain, known as the cerebral cortex begins the analysis of sensory messages. (1) Nevertheless, visual perception is possibly more widespread than one area of the cerebral cortex and like ly over various subcortical structures and number of different systems as well. (2) One of the many...show more content... However, there are many gaps within the course, which cannot possibly fully formulate the sense of perception. Not only are there missing intermediatary, but there is outside activity happening simultaneously along this path. As discussed in lecture, the retina sends (5 to 10) different information activities to different parts of the brain. Neural data may be taken to the midbrain instead to the dicephalo n. The dicephalon consists the lateral geniculate, which consists the visual occipital cortex. The complex midbrain is made up of other complex parts such as the superior collicus and the optic tectrum. The optic tectrum is then made up of more complex in tricate parts, such as the protectal nucleus and the basal optic nerve. Once again, the organization and specificity of complex within complex come into play. As seen here there are parallel simultaneous paths that are activated or inactivated due to spec ific retina information. Neurologists, Sheinberg and Logothetis studied macaque monkey responses to different visual imputs. (3) They tested the difference between one image fixed on one eye and one image fixed on one eye accompanie d with a flash of a second image on the other eye. Tests show that former test did not always evoke effective stimulus, while the latter test yields 90% effective stimulus. Activity is taken from superior temporal sulcus (STS) and the inferior Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Examples Of Perception What is perception? It is the process of recognizing and interpreting sensory stimuli. Perception is how you can see the world around you, how you experience the world around. There are two things that are included in perception. The first is the environment that you are in and how that stimulates the senses of recognition. The second is how you respond to the environment and what action is taken in and how you respond to the information you are taking in. Perception includes five senses: 1.Touch. 2.Sight. 3.Taste. 4.Smell. 5.Sound. Think of how you can remember a friend's face or a particular smell. Or even a song played will bring back an old memory. Perception allows you to take what is sensory information from your environment and then use that information to interact or react...show more content... The biggest example of this for this generation is Brain training games/Applications widely available over the last 5–10 years. The understanding that the brain could be enhanced and trained to be better, think faster and learn quicker. The speed of your reactions to different actions and circumstances play a large part in your everyday life. Fast reaction times can produce big rewards, for example, you're a goalkeeper in a soccer match and you end up saving a blistering soccer ball from entering the goal. In this instant slow reaction times may come with consequences. When the goalkeeper realizes the ball is blistering towards them, there is visual information that has to be processed and decisions regarding a correct course of action. The brain then needs to send many signals to various muscles. Feet begin to move, body stands taller, hands might travel in front of the face, and eyes may close shut suddenly, along with many more processes. This is the work of many neurons as well as numerous systems and circuits in the brain, and what's more, and you can train and enhance your skill through practice. What is semantic encoding and
