Reflective Essay On Social Media
Social media is an outlet for people to talk about the latest "hits" and whatever is going on in their everyday lives. It can be a great tool, but taking
a breather from it helped me realize how much of my time was spent online. Social media has greatly influenced the world we live in and has brought
the world closer than ever before but it can leave us more estranged from our family and neighbors as well. I recommend that others should turn off
twitter, unfriend facebook, and put Snapchat on "silent" to experience what I did when I was offline. People experience the life that exists beyond their
screens and they will see what I mean. Depression. Insecurities. Jealousy. These three struggles defined the person I became by spending most of my
time on social media. Instagram portrayed my friends' "glam lives", their perfect lives, making me feel jealous. On Twitter, selfies were shared with
no sign of imperfection, leaving me insecure. Snapchat kept me in the loop of friend gatherings that I could not be a part of because I was
working, and this left me depressed. After facing these problems, I discovered how much time I was spending on it. My mom also noticed a change
in my mood and communication. I then came to realize this and took a break from any source of social media for a month. Everything changed. I
was free of insecurities, jealousy, and depression. Social media was taking control of my feelings. I started loving myself; the person that God created
me to be. I

Negative Effects Of Social Media Essay
Social Media
Technology plays a big role in people's progression in relationships. Social media is the big boom in social relationships, they connect more people in
more ways than one. Even though Parents worry about their children on social media, teens can find a positive outcome from it. Social media
positively impacts teen relationships. Teens say that social media has more positive effects rather than negative on relationships. Also, most kids that
are introverted can find kids that have similar interest online, and make new friends.
Teens feel as if social media has more positive effect on their relationships. These positive effects include confidence building and can also make
them more unhibited. According to source, The Upside of Selfies: Social Media Isn't All Bad Kids, "One in five teens said social media makes them
feel more confident, compared with 4% who said it makes them feel less so. When it comes to relationships with friends 52% of teens said social
media has made them better versus just 4% who said it has negatively affected those relationships" (Wallace,1). With the data found in a survey
taken by Common Sense Media group, more teens feel as if social media makes them more confident to make more friends rather than not. They will
then, go out, find friends and try to connect with others to improve their overall relationship status with others. According to Kelly Wallace, ""On the
whole, teens said they feel that social media has a more positive than negative impact on their social and emotional lives, they believe that social
media helps their friendships, makes them feel more outgoing and gives them confidence" said Shira Lee Katz, Common Sense Media's director of
digital media" (Wallace,1). The director of Common Sense Media pulled information from her surveys and data and concluded that teens generally feel
as if social media improves the relationships they have with other friends. When teens notice that social media improves relationships with friends, this
feeling of accomplishment helps them come out of their shell which increases their confidence and encourages them to make more friends. For some
people it's difficult to make new friends, but social media is the starting point

Social networking has become a major part of society. Many people wake up each day and check social media websites specifically throughout
Twitter and Facebook first thing in the morning instead of reaching for a newspaper. Since people are spending such a large amount of time
surfing social networks, it is important to point out some of the positive and negative effects that social networking can have on a society. The
positive effects of social networking sites are allow people to create new relationships and reconnect with friends and family. Increased
communication, even online, strengthens relationships. And the other is social networking sites make people share everything that they want and
bring people with common interests together, offer exposure to new ideas from around the world, and lower inhibitions to overcome social
anxiety. Social media has changed the way people think and how they communicate. It's incredible to see how social media has become such a big
part of our daily lives. Just to think social media as we know it was birthed less than ten years ago in August 2003 with MySpace and has become
such an integral part of our daily lives. Synonymous with checking our email we go to our Facebook for not only our daily gossip, but for up to date
news and events.

Social Media And Sociology Essay
Social Media and Sociology Berlirce Chetgna In this modern age, the majority of society has adapted to social media and the newest technology to
fit around our lives. Technology provides tools that are imperative to the making and the use of other tools. It is a tool in itself. Technology is
changing rapidly; so rapidly, in fact, there can be cultural gaps between generations. The construction of social media has enabled access to innovative
phenomenon, broken barriers, changed our perspectives on ideas, and has even opened doors to new opportunities. Efficiency is a monumental
advantage that technology and social media has provided for many. Whether someone is on the other side of the world or a few feet away, the

Television, movies, songs, and social media are the cultured lenses in which we view the world. What we perceive through a screen can change
where we stand on certain topics; for example, gender messages and body images. Mass media not only reflects gender stereotypes but also plays a
role in changing them. Females used to be portrayed as less brave and more dependent. Now there are strong, independent female characters like
Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games and intelligent, brave female characters like Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Like women's
changing positions in society, more aggressive and dominant females are being featured. Mass media molds new stereotypes but not all the ideas that
are communicated are positive. Mass media is effective in teaching us what we "should" look like. Women should be thin. Men should be muscular.
The skinny and muscular ideals portrayed in advertising encourage men and women to look a certain way. The depiction of the female ideal has
helped shaped society's perspectives about beauty. The media pushes you to "improve your body" by buying their products but soon the road to a
skinny and toned body leads to a self destructive path of self hatred. The powerful ideas that the media transmits through words, images, and movement
can have lasting impacts on the human brain, affecting how we think and

Social Media's Impact on Society Essay
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, what do they mutually have in common? They are all social media websites. Social Media has
become the number one way to communicate with other people from around the world. It has been beneficial and helpful to many, on the contrary
harmful to some. People use social networks to catch up with a childhood friend, endorse their business, or develop news faster. Other people use it to
steal identities, cyberbully, and abuse others. It has stated that social media's are "websites and other online means of communication that are used by
large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts" ("social media.") With this in mind, how has social media

Everyone realized that MySpace was being too cluttered with spam and negated by the owners, users switched over to Facebook. Facebook
allowed several new features that MySpace did not, for example: games like FarmVille, "poking" and more. As a result of social media, people
have become more connected with each other, but consequently less connected with the real world. If people are less connected with the real
world, then what is so beneficial about social media? Overall, social media can be an enjoyable and valuable tool, which allows you to catch up
with a childhood friend, endorse their business, and acquire news faster. When you become an adult and graduate from high school or college,
people like to reminisce about the glory days. Thanks to social networks like Facebook and Classmates.com, you can connect with your childhood
friends and see what they are up to now. If you are planning your high school reunion, social network websites like Facebook, you can plan and invite
people from Facebook to come instead of collecting new contact information. In addition, companies who use a social network can promote their
business and attract more consumers to sell the product. Big business like Wal–Mart and Target can use the social networks to tell consumers what is
on sale that week and offer coupons to help save money. Business can also use the social networks, like Facebook who offer companies to promote

Effects Of Social Media Essay
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to research all types of effects social media has on society, especially adolescent girls as that age
group is mainly targeted. The role of media has changed drastically from when it first started to now. It was first created for the main purpose of
communicating information. Although that is still true to this day, there are also other purposes for the media now. Media presents information
through books, posters, the web and etc. One of the most popular forms of media today is social media. That includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
Snapchat and others similar. Social media is a platform for one to display how we want others to view us. In some ways, this is a good thing because

The culturalist theory also ties into this topic. This theory articulates that people connect with social media and create their own meaning based on
the material; images, messages etc. they receive. Theorists highly emphasize that we, the audience, have control over what we see, how much we
see and are able to mute(sound of the television, videos, etc.). It is said people interpret material based on one's personal knowledge and experience.
This explains why most people, for example, have different meanings to a book, song, television show, etc. Culturalist theory demonstrates how
personal perspective plays a role in how we interpret certain things. PRIOR RESEARCH Males and females view the pursuit of beauty as important
for females (Markey and Markey 2012). Eating disorders have increased between the early and mid–twentieth century as media began to emphasize
thinness in women. Body dissatisfaction is common in over 50% of women and young girls (Grabe et al. 2008). There have been studies regarding
the role of media in the causes of eating disorders among women. Ferguson, C. C., MuГ±oz, M., Garza, A., & Galindo, M. (2014) focused on whether
media, such as television or social media, has a greater influence in precipitating eating disorders rather than peer influence. The experiment conducted
consisted of 237 pre–adolescent and adolescent females between the ages of 10 to 17

Digital Technology And Social Media Essay
More recently than in years past, digital technology and social media have grown to become a part of our everyday lives. The recent rise in those
who own smartphones allows this everyday use of digital technology and social networking to be easier than ever before. At any time and any place,
we have the ability to "socialize" with nearly anyone–even celebrities who have no idea most of us even exist. The continuous consumption of digital
media has altered once personal face–to–face communication to just that, digital. More and more people seem to be living in what Sonia Maasik and
Jack Solomon call "The Cloud". "The Cloud" is a seemingly alternate universe of which communication is altered from personal to digital. This
universe has led to debates over whether or not these online communities are real or whether social media is actually social. Various digital media
sources also encourage users to create individual identities, of which may or may not actually be real. It seems as though our reliance on digital
technology and social media have allowed the determination of certain aspects of our lives. Although social media allows us to connect with nearly
anyone at any time, Americans have taken advantage of its use, and their attention has been drawn away from real life interactions to digital ones. The
ramifications of such influences reflect the hidden insecurities of Americans and, ironically, emphasize our inclination to boast about ourselves by
allowing others to see the

everyone in society, especially teenagers by negatively impacting their lives, face–to–face interactions, and mental health. Social media is causing
teenagers to be negatively influenced. This is an issue, because teenagers are extremely impressionable and social media is negatively impacting

or Negative?" states, "90 percent of teens have used social media" (Teens' Use of Social Media). In this statement, it is clear that a large majority
of teenagers have already been exposed to some type of social media. Since teenagers learn from direct observation and experience, it is a huge
problem when they witness things on social media that concern sexist, racist, or homophobic content. Many teenagers even say that they have an

When people think they are the only ones getting bullied, they are scared to go out in public, which makes them angry. They don't know how to
solve the problem and that cause huge issues with their life. Constantly feeling lonely makes you feel like you have no friends, nor can you get any
friends because of it. More studies shown from Carl shows that males get angry and vengeful whenever they are cyberbullied, which causes them to
say something back to a bully or try to fight. When teens do that when getting bullied rather than trying to solve the problem in a good way only
makes things worse. Ignoring a cyberbully and deleting your social media account is a good step into stopping the bullying. If you fire words back at a

simple message for everyone to see at once. They can let everyone know where they are, what they're doing and how they're feeling, and it only
takes a few seconds. The most genuine complication of social media is addiction. A reporter on Salem health characterized that text messaging is no

addictions still remain, but in our generation and in analogy to the Facebook mania, it's quite insignificant. Facebook addiction is advised to be a

much more impactful than on social media. Rather than making social media a huge part of your life, Fowlkes wishes that people would look up

through pictures, blogs, music, links and many other ways. As social networking sites become more important to society, some people agrees that
these online sites are causing society a great trouble, especially the teens (our generation). Many sites cause harassment, bully, violation of someone's
privacy etc... Social media can change a person life but these days it's affecting negatively, especially teens. Social sites can ruin a person's life by

Social networking sites encourage people to be more public about their personal lives, because personal details of our lives can be posted so easily,
so we feel safe putting out there but its really not safe like its mentioned in the quote "Neither privacy nor publicity is dead, but technology will
continue to make a mess of both." – Danah Boyd. It can be bad for our college record. What's more interesting is that the things we post remain
available forever. Some people might post a photo of friends doing party and it may seem harmless, the image can be less attractive in the
situation of an employer doing a background check. While most sites allow their users to control who sees the things they've posted, Usually I
look for the sites that are safe to use and the ones I cant trust but I sometimes I am forced to use it. Sometimes we don't know it well or it doesn't as
it supposed to be. Social media sites is a big tools in our society and we use it almost every in our life. We don't really see how harmful it can be
because we just try to have fun and communicate with friends. Some people take advantage of it by doing what they aren't supposed to be doing. It's
pretty common that social media sites are the main cause of cyber bullying. Hopefully we will understand social media site and use it wisely instead

Reflective Essay On Social Media

  • 1. Reflective Essay On Social Media Social media is an outlet for people to talk about the latest "hits" and whatever is going on in their everyday lives. It can be a great tool, but taking a breather from it helped me realize how much of my time was spent online. Social media has greatly influenced the world we live in and has brought the world closer than ever before but it can leave us more estranged from our family and neighbors as well. I recommend that others should turn off twitter, unfriend facebook, and put Snapchat on "silent" to experience what I did when I was offline. People experience the life that exists beyond their screens and they will see what I mean. Depression. Insecurities. Jealousy. These three struggles defined the person I became by spending most of my time on social media. Instagram portrayed my friends' "glam lives", their perfect lives, making me feel jealous. On Twitter, selfies were shared with no sign of imperfection, leaving me insecure. Snapchat kept me in the loop of friend gatherings that I could not be a part of because I was working, and this left me depressed. After facing these problems, I discovered how much time I was spending on it. My mom also noticed a change in my mood and communication. I then came to realize this and took a break from any source of social media for a month. Everything changed. I was free of insecurities, jealousy, and depression. Social media was taking control of my feelings. I started loving myself; the person that God created me to be. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Negative Effects Of Social Media Essay Social Media Technology plays a big role in people's progression in relationships. Social media is the big boom in social relationships, they connect more people in more ways than one. Even though Parents worry about their children on social media, teens can find a positive outcome from it. Social media positively impacts teen relationships. Teens say that social media has more positive effects rather than negative on relationships. Also, most kids that are introverted can find kids that have similar interest online, and make new friends. Teens feel as if social media has more positive effect on their relationships. These positive effects include confidence building and can also make them more unhibited. According to source, The Upside of Selfies: Social Media Isn't All Bad Kids, "One in five teens said social media makes them feel more confident, compared with 4% who said it makes them feel less so. When it comes to relationships with friends 52% of teens said social media has made them better versus just 4% who said it has negatively affected those relationships" (Wallace,1). With the data found in a survey taken by Common Sense Media group, more teens feel as if social media makes them more confident to make more friends rather than not. They will then, go out, find friends and try to connect with others to improve their overall relationship status with others. According to Kelly Wallace, ""On the whole, teens said they feel that social media has a more positive than negative impact on their social and emotional lives, they believe that social media helps their friendships, makes them feel more outgoing and gives them confidence" said Shira Lee Katz, Common Sense Media's director of digital media" (Wallace,1). The director of Common Sense Media pulled information from her surveys and data and concluded that teens generally feel as if social media improves the relationships they have with other friends. When teens notice that social media improves relationships with friends, this feeling of accomplishment helps them come out of their shell which increases their confidence and encourages them to make more friends. For some people it's difficult to make new friends, but social media is the starting point Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Social Media: Changing Our Society Essay Social Media: Changing Our Society Electricity was first introduced to society hundreds of years ago; the way people communicate began to change in many different ways since then. New inventions helped people build more sophisticate tools to build better places to live and work. This new inventions changed the way we live now days; they make our lives much easier. In the decade of the 1920's when radio was first introduced to public, people begin buying it and using it more and more, as years passed by it become incredibly popular that most American families had a radio at their houses. They could spend hours with their families listening to music or their favorite shows. This was just the beginning of the revolution of social media....show more content... Social networking has become a major part of society. Many people wake up each day and check social media websites specifically throughout Twitter and Facebook first thing in the morning instead of reaching for a newspaper. Since people are spending such a large amount of time surfing social networks, it is important to point out some of the positive and negative effects that social networking can have on a society. The positive effects of social networking sites are allow people to create new relationships and reconnect with friends and family. Increased communication, even online, strengthens relationships. And the other is social networking sites make people share everything that they want and bring people with common interests together, offer exposure to new ideas from around the world, and lower inhibitions to overcome social anxiety. Social media has changed the way people think and how they communicate. It's incredible to see how social media has become such a big part of our daily lives. Just to think social media as we know it was birthed less than ten years ago in August 2003 with MySpace and has become such an integral part of our daily lives. • 4. Social Media And Sociology Essay Social Media and Sociology Berlirce Chetgna In this modern age, the majority of society has adapted to social media and the newest technology to fit around our lives. Technology provides tools that are imperative to the making and the use of other tools. It is a tool in itself. Technology is changing rapidly; so rapidly, in fact, there can be cultural gaps between generations. The construction of social media has enabled access to innovative phenomenon, broken barriers, changed our perspectives on ideas, and has even opened doors to new opportunities. Efficiency is a monumental advantage that technology and social media has provided for many. Whether someone is on the other side of the world or a few feet away, the geographical happenstance...show more content... Television, movies, songs, and social media are the cultured lenses in which we view the world. What we perceive through a screen can change where we stand on certain topics; for example, gender messages and body images. Mass media not only reflects gender stereotypes but also plays a role in changing them. Females used to be portrayed as less brave and more dependent. Now there are strong, independent female characters like Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games and intelligent, brave female characters like Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Like women's changing positions in society, more aggressive and dominant females are being featured. Mass media molds new stereotypes but not all the ideas that are communicated are positive. Mass media is effective in teaching us what we "should" look like. Women should be thin. Men should be muscular. The skinny and muscular ideals portrayed in advertising encourage men and women to look a certain way. The depiction of the female ideal has helped shaped society's perspectives about beauty. The media pushes you to "improve your body" by buying their products but soon the road to a skinny and toned body leads to a self destructive path of self hatred. The powerful ideas that the media transmits through words, images, and movement can have lasting impacts on the human brain, affecting how we think and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Social Media's Impact on Society Essay Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, what do they mutually have in common? They are all social media websites. Social Media has become the number one way to communicate with other people from around the world. It has been beneficial and helpful to many, on the contrary harmful to some. People use social networks to catch up with a childhood friend, endorse their business, or develop news faster. Other people use it to steal identities, cyberbully, and abuse others. It has stated that social media's are "websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts" ("social media.") With this in mind, how has social media influenced...show more content... Everyone realized that MySpace was being too cluttered with spam and negated by the owners, users switched over to Facebook. Facebook allowed several new features that MySpace did not, for example: games like FarmVille, "poking" and more. As a result of social media, people have become more connected with each other, but consequently less connected with the real world. If people are less connected with the real world, then what is so beneficial about social media? Overall, social media can be an enjoyable and valuable tool, which allows you to catch up with a childhood friend, endorse their business, and acquire news faster. When you become an adult and graduate from high school or college, people like to reminisce about the glory days. Thanks to social networks like Facebook and Classmates.com, you can connect with your childhood friends and see what they are up to now. If you are planning your high school reunion, social network websites like Facebook, you can plan and invite people from Facebook to come instead of collecting new contact information. In addition, companies who use a social network can promote their business and attract more consumers to sell the product. Big business like Wal–Mart and Target can use the social networks to tell consumers what is on sale that week and offer coupons to help save money. Business can also use the social networks, like Facebook who offer companies to promote their page for a fee, and place advertisements on Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Effects Of Social Media Essay INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to research all types of effects social media has on society, especially adolescent girls as that age group is mainly targeted. The role of media has changed drastically from when it first started to now. It was first created for the main purpose of communicating information. Although that is still true to this day, there are also other purposes for the media now. Media presents information through books, posters, the web and etc. One of the most popular forms of media today is social media. That includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others similar. Social media is a platform for one to display how we want others to view us. In some ways, this is a good thing because we are in full...show more content... The culturalist theory also ties into this topic. This theory articulates that people connect with social media and create their own meaning based on the material; images, messages etc. they receive. Theorists highly emphasize that we, the audience, have control over what we see, how much we see and are able to mute(sound of the television, videos, etc.). It is said people interpret material based on one's personal knowledge and experience. This explains why most people, for example, have different meanings to a book, song, television show, etc. Culturalist theory demonstrates how personal perspective plays a role in how we interpret certain things. PRIOR RESEARCH Males and females view the pursuit of beauty as important for females (Markey and Markey 2012). Eating disorders have increased between the early and mid–twentieth century as media began to emphasize thinness in women. Body dissatisfaction is common in over 50% of women and young girls (Grabe et al. 2008). There have been studies regarding the role of media in the causes of eating disorders among women. Ferguson, C. C., MuГ±oz, M., Garza, A., & Galindo, M. (2014) focused on whether media, such as television or social media, has a greater influence in precipitating eating disorders rather than peer influence. The experiment conducted consisted of 237 pre–adolescent and adolescent females between the ages of 10 to 17 Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Digital Technology And Social Media Essay More recently than in years past, digital technology and social media have grown to become a part of our everyday lives. The recent rise in those who own smartphones allows this everyday use of digital technology and social networking to be easier than ever before. At any time and any place, we have the ability to "socialize" with nearly anyone–even celebrities who have no idea most of us even exist. The continuous consumption of digital media has altered once personal face–to–face communication to just that, digital. More and more people seem to be living in what Sonia Maasik and Jack Solomon call "The Cloud". "The Cloud" is a seemingly alternate universe of which communication is altered from personal to digital. This universe has led to debates over whether or not these online communities are real or whether social media is actually social. Various digital media sources also encourage users to create individual identities, of which may or may not actually be real. It seems as though our reliance on digital technology and social media have allowed the determination of certain aspects of our lives. Although social media allows us to connect with nearly anyone at any time, Americans have taken advantage of its use, and their attention has been drawn away from real life interactions to digital ones. The ramifications of such influences reflect the hidden insecurities of Americans and, ironically, emphasize our inclination to boast about ourselves by allowing others to see the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
