1. THE MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT GROUP OF BOSTON
The Paradox of Knowing:
How to Follow the Rainbow Successfully
This article is a second draft, submitted Sept 1st, 2016; By Prof. William E Morrison Jr. Consultant- Industrial
Psychologist & Senior Lecture
In thisarticle, we willbe discussing:
A. How priorities and discretionary income can be a major determinate to a downfall of one’s Family.
B. The Do’s & the Don’ts.
C. How can you be a major factor in reaching goals to put the family back on track?
D. How one can overcome the many emotional, mental, and psychological issues that causes employment
issues if one does not know how to go down the path that will obtain success in the new 2016 arena and
current employment culture of today.
This Modelis about:
Priorities
Discretionary Income
Status Quo Employment
Unemployment
What to do as we follow “The Rainbow” successfully to reach the finish line for our career
development realistically.
Ones’ Familial Priorities:
Let us mention for a moment Discretionary Income how it can be used in a few stages:
2. 2
A. Emergency Planning:
Health Issues
Education
House Repairs
Employment Status
Senior Family Members
The one area that has to be planned for in this Model of Discretionary Income must be Employment Status.
Both underachieved and employment is related to moving up the organization ladder.
We cannot think of any other factor that can destroy the entire family faster than when one is facing
unemployment issues and all of the ramifications that follows. For a moment let us look at the Senior
Executives that are classified in the Status Quo Arena:
Some Executives don’t understand thatthe very things thatare often their strengths may also
be their weaknesses or obstacles to moving beyond their current career situation. So, manyof
the professionals who do extremely detailed work (this list often includes lawyers, IT project
managers, engineers) are, according to the Myers-Briggs personality profile, often described
as INTJ’s. (Introverted, intuitive, Thinking and Judging) Thatis to say, the very qualitythat
makes them suited to their very detailed work also makes it extremely difficult for this same
Executive to get a handleon the bigger picture of their aspiring career.
WhatI have found over years of managementdevelopmentconsulting is that many, whowould
describe themselves as people who dot every “I” and cross every “T”, also find that their
thoroughnesshas painted them into a career corner. Theyare so busy being excellent at their
current job or profession that they get bogged down. Theyhave little energy or ability to look
beyond to their next larger career goals. They find themselves so tuned in to their current
position that they have become one-dimensional professionally, therefore, it is hard for them
to “think outside the box”. They become stuck in a peaked rut.
Unfortunately, whatcompoundsthe difficulty of the situation for many is that they have a
“good job” and they are “good at whatthey do.” This makes it hard for them or their
families to encouragethe parallel thinking required to investigating an alternate career paths
or opportunities and focusing on their broad array of transferable skills. Their career search
has been nothing buta “fishing trip” and they do not know how to think out of the box, but
their story and direction is “whatI have been doing today” and not whatvalue they can bring
to the table tomorrow!

B. Let’s talk for a moment of how one needs to follow “The Rainbow” employment concept and its priorities
for an individual who is in the Status Quo arena and those who are unemployed!
This Rainbow Employment Concept process is usually a 6-10 month endeavor. We must assume this Senior
Executive has the horsepower, work history, educational credentials, senior business leadership personality
and a strong desire to succeed. Now we all will be working to achieve the same goal all the way to the
finish line together. We will be working in an aspiring direction most likely in the CEO, COO, or the C-Status
arena.
As we continue our journey on this priory Rainbow – we need to list the Do’s & Don’ts list:
The Don’ts:
Do not answer ads, WSJ ect.
Do not go for open Requisitions.
Do not spend time with Head Hunters, as they do not work for you!
Do not answer newspapers ads.
Do not write Traditional Resumes
If you are truly a Senior Executive with all the credentials I have talked about and looking for a total
compensation package with a base salary of 275k to 480k plus all the benefits that go with such opportunities,
then we have a few suggestions that one needs to follow as we continue our journey.
The Do’s:
Never put yourself into an audience and people’s perception that you are looking for work.
Find out the “To Do list” of that organization you might have some value interest in. Know the
players and the culture of that organization to the last detail especially of Senior Management and
boards members.
Do a thorough marketing approach to your future career development. You have to be really focused
and cannot be all things to all people.
Know the unadvertised market and network and who could be your future audience.
You must be focused on the goal and not be all things to all people.
You must look at yourself…ask yourself…What you bring to the table as value and not… what have
you have been doing over the past years. It’s so important to understand this element for without it
you will be dead in the water at this point.
Be willing to think out of the box.
Use appropriate timing and opportunities to talk to Board members or CEO’s in this endeavor.
Know the importance of a functional approach. Use your transferrable skills and skill based resume
with lots of self accomplishments of what one has done over the years that is realist in today market
arena.
Remember that Exit Strategies of one’s total picture sometimes is more important than the offer itself.
Know how to use an Employment Attorney for your final status as you sign on the dotted line without
“asking for the farm” so to speak…
Your spouse or significant other must be supporting and be part of the journey with all of us!
4. 4
Ask yourself this question…Areyou getting qualityinterviews at35% - 55% aboveyour
current earnings? Thiscould bea barometer of how you are doing …
I must say I have seen many resumes that are over two years old of Senior Executive where the statuses of
these people have not changed.
In conclusion, this author would be pleased to discuss this article in detail and offer any suggestions that may
help you in your future endeavors!
Let’s hit this together… Let’s Reach over the Rainbow and understand your most important priorities so that
your career development can reach its highest peak for you and your family!
