PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
INDIANA UNIVERSITY (IU) HEALTH, INDIANAPOLIS, IN 2013-PRESENT
The IU Health Academic Campus now includes: University Hospital and Simon Cancer Center, Riley Children’s Hospital,
Methodist Hospital, the VA medical campus and the new Eskenazi County Hospital. This brings together three level one
trauma centers and nearly 2,000 beds.
Director of Peri Operative System Collaborative
The IU Health System level Collaberative effort is designed to foster synergy, reducing administrative and clinical practice
variance. The program is designed to maximize vertical and horizontal integration of all business units across all facilities and
with integrating: budgeting, policies, practices, benchmarks, supply and purchasing. A core challenge is to foster innovative
improvements to the patient, staff and provider environments.
Accomplishments
• Gained physician organization and cooperative management:
o Moved IU Hospital from 87th
to 4th
in the nation based on UHC PSI 90 Quality Scores
o Led, IU Health to be the only system with two of its peri-operative programs IU Hospital and Ball
Memorial in the UHC top 10
o Reduced staff turnover and improved retention by improving work environment and pay scale
o Conducted over 150 peri-operative transformation and materials management events recovering
over $47 million in sustainable savings
o Expanded Pre-Surgical Wellness Program, Impact AR Nutrition Program and PAT Process with
ERAS elements across the System. Resulting in recovering a minimum of 2 days on LOS, reducing
SSI and readmissions by over 50%
• Revised and implemented new Physician Engaged Materials Management Program to review all active and proposed
clinical care products to gain the best market price point and ensure the best for patient care. Resulted in cost
reductions of over $60 million annually.
• Developed and implemented an “Accountable Care” quality care program for all surgical specialty care areas.
• Designed and integrated service line specific QA incentive structure for IUHP and physician salary management.
• Developed and implemented pre-surgical Wellness and Nutrition Program system wide.
• Revised the materials management process for clinical and operative management, system wide.
• Led collaboration within Cancer Center for NCI designation.
INDIANA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL AND CANCER CENTER, INDIANAPOLIS, IN 2012-PRESENT
Director of IU Hospital Operative Services
Leads the strategic, as well as daily operations at IU Hospital and Simon Cancer Center. Management across 10 clinical
departments, Interventional Radiology, Bronchoscopy and GI/ERCP. Budget currently in excess of $55 million.
2. Accomplishments
• Improved Quality: Led SCIP and other dashboard markers to their highest levels ever.
• Reduced General Surgery LOS index from > 5 to 1.13 (currently) recovering over 12,000 days in 2012-2013. All
service lines now under 1.2 LOS index.
• Integrated Management of IUH ORs carrying out 1100 cases per month including one of the most progressive
transplant and multidisciplinary robotic programs in the country.
• Served as co-chair of the system wide oversight committee for Operative Services for IU Health and its 29 statewide
locations.
• Selected as representative for IU Health to the Indiana Coalition for Patient Safety.
INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, INDIANAPOLIS, IN 2005-2012
Vice Chairman of Clinical Affairs
Facilitate, strategic and daily clinical activities as related to hospital systems and surgical services to: Clarian/ IU Health, IU
Hospital, Riley Children’s Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Clarian West and North facilities, Saxony Hospital, Wishard/
Eskenazi Health, VSN 11 VAMC, and three Level I Trauma Centers.
Accomplishments
• Revised the inter-local contract with Wishard Health care with expansion of funding for surgical coverage, improving
quality and sustained increase in revenue to surgical providers in excess of $6 million per year.
• Supported site visits for Level I trauma designation at Riley, Wishard and Methodist Hospitals
• Continued Burn Center Certification visits at Riley and Wishard facilities
• Led, Development, construction and now operation of the Simon Cancer Center and Operating Room
• Support clinical, resident and student educational program coordination and integration across the departments and
sections with multiple coordinators.
• VAMC- negotiated revised contracts for physician payment. Developed and designed a new Plastic Surgery Clinic
and outpatient surgical facility. Facilitated the development of an “Awake” hand surgery program, which has
eliminated extended wait times and access to ambulatory surgery.
• Engaged with Deans Office of Gift Giving, successfully expanding research and other endowments by over $12
million, including full funding of the tumor tissue bank.
