Media Analysis
My analysis of major themes and how the media participate in the construction of attitudes about gender and sexual orientation is predicated upon 16
articles drawn from three major news sources: Newsweek, The New York Times, and The Advocate. The articles were published in the months of
January, February, and March. The selection of the articles was not random; I specifically chose articles whose titles and introductions were of
particular interest. The three news sources, particularly the Times and The Advocate, published many articles related toLGBT issues–typically greater
than a dozen for each weekly search–from which I selected only two per week. In sifting through the 16 articles, I identified three important...show

As in the case of all of the articles I examined for this analytical essay, the authors avoided insensitive language and euphemisms, which might have
allowed them to construct their arguments in a less–than–candid way. My sense is that, based on the cohort of Newsweek articles, the magazine's
authors and editors do care about marriage equality and social justice, but they are influenced by the dominant culture in perhaps believing that an
issue is not really legitimate until it has been raised by heterosexual males. Gavin Newsom, especially, is given a lot of national coverage about
marriage equality, despite his not being an LGBT person. Newsweek does a poor job of consulting members of the LGBT community about issues that
directly affect them. Maybe the magazine's writers just are not comfortable enough to interject the thoughts, opinions, and arguments of LGBT people
directly into their articles, thus [possibly] unintentionally reinforcing norms of heterosexual male power. The Advocate and The New York Times, in
contrast, place very heavy emphasis on integrating the voices of members of the LGBT community, particularly 'L' and 'G.' The Advocate is, of course,
a magazine whose primary audience, as mentioned above, is the LGBT community. The New York Times is published in a city with an active and
influential LGBT community, and the paper–as a result–must serve their interests, too.

Media Representation Essay
The majority of cast members in movies, and television shows, from the past and modern day seem to all share one thing in common: they are
straight, white, and male. Once one becomes aware, it is not difficult to notice this everywhere. What is being noticed is the severe lack of well
written, and well represented people of color, women, and members of the LGBT+ community. Representation, according to Rick Beach, is "the ways
in which the media portrays particular groups, communities, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological perspective." This means there
is usually only good representation for majorities, and bad representation for minorities. Normally, this means stereotypes are played up about people of
color, women,...show more content...
Now, especially in 2015, it seems as if more television shows have good representation. Shows like Elementary, Call of the Midwife, Sleepy
Hollow, Orphan Black, and The 100 show women, people of color, and members or the LGBT+ communities in important roles, and positive lights
(Tang). Nellie Andreeva in the article "Pilots 2015: The Year of Ethnic Castings", talks about the "noticeable shift towards minority casting" in late
2014, and early 2015, and how casting agents are now able to say how despite people of color once being rejected for almost any role on television
they "feel like the tide has turned" and that they can now "pitch any actor for any role and [they] think that's good." However, now, with the
introduction of more female writers and producers on television, it seems as if they may be part of the reason why this is happening. Shonda
Rhimes, executive producer for popular diverse shows like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, "says she isn't
'diversifying' television, she's 'normalizing' it" (Williams). On a different level, Rebecca Sugar, writer of Steven Universe, has made her show quite
diverse as well. Mey writes, "the three main characters (besides Steven) are all voiced by women of color, and (like Steven) it is easy to interpret
[them] as people of color." James Michael–Nichols on Huffington Post also writes that the show contains very "heavy queer overtones." This means
not only is Steven Universe a good role model for children, but that it also contains just about any type of diversity with a cast of mostly women and
people of color, and characters that represent the LGBT+ community. This easily makes it one of the most diverse cartoons currently being aired on
television. Overall, while it may not seem like a trend in the media, the introduction of new television shows containing diverse

Paid Media Analysis
Paid media is a traditional advertising that promotes content and drives exposure such as banner ads, paid search marketing, sponsorships and content
syndication. It focuses in an effort to create brand awareness or new customer acquisition. However, it is usually expensive that requires you to be
creative and able to deliver your message to your consumers at the same time.
Owned media is digital properties that you have full control of the content such as corporate websites, blogs, communities, email newsletters and social
media channels. It targets its brand's existing community and current customers. But it is time consuming that you need to be able to work with your
team and build a community and value to the customer.

The article "80 Percent of Americans Can't See The Milky Way Anymore" by Michelle Z. Donahue published in National Geographic summarizes a
new study pertaining to light pollution. The media article focuses on Fabio Falchi and the team at the Light Pollution Science and Technology Institute
(ISTIL) in Italy who recently announced "a new survey that quantifies nighttime sky quality for every region in the world"(Article). The explained
methodology is done through using 35,000 ground–based observations as well as six months' worth of data from the Suomi National Polar orbiting

The researchers developed the 'world Atlas of artificial sky luminance' as a means of mapping variations in light pollution around the globe. The
baseline for the data begins with "Natural lighting levels (which) are governed by natural celestial sources, mainly the Moon, natural atmospheric
emission (airglow), the stairs and Milky Way, and zodiacal light" (Research). The research article provides a baseline equation of what defines a clean
moon–less night – "22 magnitude per square arcsecond in Johnson–Cousins V–brand. The results found that although the sky immediately above the
source of the pollution was the most intense, light pollution managed to "function with peak at intermediate angles."(research) which the article later
states is 30В° above the horizon. A surprising detail was that light pollution managed to extend beyond the horizon by a significant amount and still
hold a substantial impact on the night sky. The exact statistics used by media sites are "that about 83% of the world's population and more than 99% of
the U.S and European populations live under light–polluted skies. Due to light pollution, the Milky Way is not visible to more than one–third of
humanity"(Research). As a surprising detail pertaining to population density, Canada has roughly 80% of its land–mass with pristine skies yet 97% of
its population live in some form of light–polluted levels. All other G20 Countries are broken down in the same way. The obvious conclusion is that
light pollution is a global problem that "has enveloped our planet in a luminous fog that prevents most of Earth's population from having the opportunity
to observe our galaxy"(Research). Proposed solutions brought forth by the research article can only speculate like future

Reflective Essay, Media Analysis
When I started Composition I, I never thought that it will be so difficult. Before this class, I hardly managed to write a 200 word document; now, I
am writing documents that contain 2000 words and I have been improving. Personally, it is very important for me to improve my writing skills
because I want to be able to write a paper and have people understand it. During this semester, I have learned that a document is never completely
perfect; every document could use improvement. The most difficult to write would have to be my Synthesis Essay, Media Analysis essay, and the
Research Based Academic Argument Essay, which I will explain later. For these three essays, I had to first write it, then, I would send if to my
teacher so that she could make comments and hep me improve my essay. After making the corrections needed, I would send the document again and I
would receive more corrections. I learned that every time you reread your document, you can find grammatical or vocabulary errors that need to be

During this essay, I learned a plethora of great things. Honestly, I never had analyzed how marketing subtly persuades their audience to do what
they want without the audience even noticing. I learned how every single aspect in a video plays an important role. The colors used, the way the
characters are expressed, gender, age, and music are many aspects that we should analyze in the future while watching a video. For this essay, I
used the MLA format more accurately. In the works cited page, I forgot to put italics the book titles. I effectively made use of quoting, as well as
making correct source citations in my essay; I was more focused on the problem of obesity and omitted to analyze other aspects like the main
character, music, colors, etc. The Media Analysis essay encouraged me to analyze the videos I watch with critical

Media Effects
The Effects of Media on the Public's Opinion Mass media – have you ever taken the time to consider two articles about the same thing? Some may be
more bias against a group or idea, while others keep a strict, non bias view. The way the media portrays events may change or even corrupt people's
thoughts on certain public matters. This paper will dissect four articles on the Woodstock riots and show the relationships and differences between
them. On a Sunday night, near the closing song of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, there were a few bonfires were reported. The firefighters, feeling they
were under control, let these bonfires burn. Then Limp Bizkit came on, another hard–core band. In their song Breakstuff, the audience climbed...show

Chris Melnyczenko to help place blame on the disgruntled youth. Melnyczenko said, They're destroying everything. (Pg. 1 para. 7) Another similar
quote by an unknown person, Oh man they must of run out of drugs, (page 1 & 2) struck the author so much that he made it the title. Facts may be
different or changed up to help exaggerate the authors' or companies' view points in the articles, Is Rock 'n' Rage Replacing Rock 'n' Roll? and
Woodstock Gets Ugly. In the article, Is Rock 'n' Rage Replacing Rock 'n' Roll? the author spends the majority of his writing comparing the past two
Woodstocks to the current one, barely touching on the subject of the riot. The article only stated what happened and the fact that the blame should be
placed on the band, Limp Bizkit. The band was said to have urged the audience to break stuff. In the other article, Woodstock Gets Ugly, it is said that
placing one hard–core band after another could be a mistake and may be the cause of the riots, or other happening, to be placed on the organizers of
the event, the bands or the audience. This shows how the companies' or authors' views can be bias against certain groups or ideas by placing the
blame on a single band, but a non bias paper places the blame all around. The motivation in

This essay is about to analyse certain media text by using particular semiotic codes. The semiology study in particular is based on theory
developed by Saussure and Pierce and means study of the signs in the text. According to Saussure the 'language is a system of signs that express
ideas' (Saussure 1915/1966 cited in Berger, 2012:7). When media analysis is made it is about to show the relationship between the signs in certain

Symbols and icons are used to represent companies 'corporate identity' (Berger, 2012:11). This paper in particular will be focused on the way that

many different ways. The readers are very important, because by analysing the product they bring to it their own cultural meaning and the connotation
and the denotation in the picture and text have different interpretation according to every reader`s cultural values (Berger, 2012).
Title and the publication of the magazine have very important role in shaping customers' expectations. The title as Goddard states is 'little capsules
of meaning' (1998:80). By analysing the meaning of the title and the production, we can find out the class of the magazine. The cover which will be

Essay about Reflection on the media
"So many of the pictures we see are artificial, manufactured images. What happens when a girl or woman compares her real self with this narrow,
unreal image of "perfection"?" (SB 127). Advertisers constantly use unrealistic models, male or female, to sell their products. These techniques target
people's self esteem, and plants false images of perfection in society's mind. The media's techniques lower people's self esteem and damages their self
image.
I don't agree with the techniques the media uses. They make young girls and women feel insecure about flaws that don't exist. "The Price of

media plays a big part in my life and others.
The problems found in the media can't be solved easily. "Ads tend to convey the idea that appearance is allВimportant. They teach us to be
selfВconscious about how we look" (SB 128) To grow up being taught to be selfВconscious is tough. People should be able to go about their lives
without constantly being concerned about how they look. A simple solution to any problem about self image through the media is to address the fact
that everyone is beautiful in their own way. Promote loving yourself the way you are instead of influencing others to change for others. Have the
media come together and agree that it is perfectly acceptable to teach others and influence them to be happy with who they are. All the problems
addressed in the media cant't and won't be solved easily but it takes the first step of people to at least try.
The media's techniques lower people's self esteem and damages their self image. All the lies and false images have impacted our society negatively in
many ways. From increasing numbers of females with eating disorders , to our society being accustomed to being selfВconscious, the media needs to
change dramatically. If the media were to use

Reflective Essay On The Media
The draft is coming along very well, in my opinion. I am really enjoying writing this piece because I like that I am acting as a journalist in it. I now
understand something that many in our society do not. Therefore, exposing the truth behind our reliance on technology is something cathartic. I want
others to read what I have written because I want them to understand the same things I now do about the corporations that silently own our data, and
subsequently us. Furthermore, the biggest hurdle so far is trying to write over two–thousand words on my topic. It requires me to dig deep in order to
overcome it, and to find as many examples as possible. I do not want to write meaningless things just to meet the word count, so I take this obstacle as
a challenge. It is one that I know I defeat with a little more research and self–reflection on my opinion on the issue. The thing that keeps me going is
that little voice in the back of my mind that I am letting others know about a topic that is not covered as much in the mainstream media. This is
important to uncover the truth, and then expose those who are trying to keep those facts a secret from the general public. Also, I believe that the only
thing you can do to help is to critique my paper during our conference. This will help me to see if I am going in the right direction with my piece.
2: Write a small case for or against social media. Is it helping in the spread of well–informed ideas or hurting? How does it play a role in social
movements?
2: Social media is detrimental to our society, and especially to those within the community. In fact, this longing for likes has led to us valuing instant
gratification above anything. Gone are the days when one could work diligently for something. Now, we focus too much on our social standing on
these websites, rather than doing something worthwhile. We want to be loved by all, and measure our self–worth on how many "likes" something
gains on Facebook or Instagram. We judge our friendships and relationships with others solely based on how long one's streak is, meaning how many
days someone consecutively sent you a picture or video on Snapchat. What would happen if the internet was suddenly offline? Although this is an

Dangers And Long-Term Effects Of Tanning
Media Analysis 'Media' is the plural of the word 'medium', which often refers to different ways of communicating with other people; if the target is
a large number of people, then it is called 'mass media'. There are many types of media, such as TV, radio, films, newspaper, Internet etc. The main
purpose of media is to entertain; however they can also be used to persuade, inform, explain and advice. Media can be very powerful; therefore
people are influenced and affected by them. The two articles we have looked at for analysis have a common theme – both talks about the dangers and

The two texts have been written with different intentions and they both have specific target audiences. The first text, 'Sun Vampires' from The Big
Issue, has been written to inform the readers of the dangers and long–term effects of tanning. Other purposes include: to ridicule the 'tanorexics', to
advice people about the proper method of tanning and to warn those who are beginning to go on the sunbeds. The main target audience of this article
is the younger generations of the society who are more likely to get addicted to tanning on sunbeds. Nevertheless to some extent, the authorial intent is
to entertain and titillate leisurely readers who are looking for something to amuse the mind. In order to achieve the purpose and communicate the ideas
to the readership, the writer uses vernacular language such as 'fork out', 'one hell of a habit' and 'let's face it', and modern names, e.g. Peter Andre and
Bros – these techniques appeal greatly to the young people and therefore convey the message more effectively. The writer also grabs the attention of
casual readers by using a light–hearted tone– as a result of this, the reader wouldn't be too shocked or frightened, thus willing to buy another copy of
the magazine in the future. The second text, 'Face the fact – the sun is a real danger', from Derby Evening Telegraph (DET), have similar purposes to
the 'Sun Vampires': to

What is 'public relations'? Public relations is the relationships established with the media to create favourable reports about the business and its

increase public recognition of the business and prepare public opinion to accept the business brand, its product range and a well–planned public

What Makes The World At Large
From its beginnings, media has always been distributed through networks. Though the networks of today differ greatly from those of before, the basic
concept remains the same. There are many definitions of what a network is, and there are numerous types of networks. Media is connected to, and
makes use of, more than just one of these types of networks. With the use of today's expansive and complicated technology, more of these networks
are being made accessible to media companies. This essay will be looking at what networks are, the essentially symbiotic relationship between them
and media, and will analyse the effects of this relationship on the world at large.
What is a network. Examples – biological, identity, governmental, electrical...show more content...
It is made up of different networks, from the nervous system to the circulatory system. As argued by Terranova, these networks essentially bend the
fabric of space–time in that they directly affect the connections between the two bodies and the time it takes for whatever is being communicated to
get from one end to the other. Furthermore they "actively mould what they connect by creating new topological configurations and thus effectively
contributing to the constitution of geopolitical entities such as cities and regions, or nations and empires."(Terranova, 2004) Networks outside the
natural scientific spheres are what, to most observers, seem to have a greater hold over everyday life today, and the way this power is working with
media is making it more powerful.
Examples of networked media changing the world – television (audio/visual) and the Internet (two way) Despite the growth of the Internet around the
world, television is still probably the largest and most influential media network. This extends across the world, as stated in The Three Ecologies,
"Many people in the Third World will have televisions long before they have proper irrigation."(Guattari, 1989) While radio may have existed before
it, television played a larger role in the spread of capitalism and the development of the global village. Television also contributed more to the growth
of the power of media networks, all this due to the effectiveness of imagery over simply

The power of the advertisement comes from the woman, not from the watch. She is portrayed as being happy, relaxed, and carefree. It is interesting
that the woman isn't shown wearing the watch. Rather than promote the watch itself, the woman's appearance is emphasized. The idea that "men act
and women appear" is directly emphasized in this advertisement (Berger, 1977). Her rosy cheeks and wide smile attribute to the idea of a carefree
lifestyle. In relation to the history of advertising, this advertisement falls under the typographic culture. There is little emphasis on the text, rather, on
the image of the product being advertised (Postman, 1985). There is hardly any text to explain the product; rather the woman does the explaining. Her
facial expression is the focal selling point of the advertisement. The overall message of the advertisement is to somewhat difficult to decode. There is
some ambiguity in figuring out the underlying message, however. The main purpose of the advertisement is to sell a woman's watch. The underlying
interpretation is that by buying this expensive watch, one will have time for more enjoyable activities and lead a stress–free life. When scanning

or controversial. However, after glancing back at it, the key point of interest were the words, "Snow Angels: 2:48

Media and Society Does society influence media or does media influence society? In a modern world, dependent on continuous communication this
is a very important question. If the world were not dependent on communication over large distances, schooling on a mass basis would not be

An average reader loves a good scandal, especially something to do with anyone in the public eye regularly, for instance: royalty, popstars,

further to gather stories. An increase in the "paparazzi" has led to a great deal of pressure being put on the rich and famous, with every detail of
their private life being examined, all for the sake of a story that will satisfy society. On the other hand, it cannot be doubted that media influences
people's attitudes and outlooks by conveying a variety of information which is acquired from newspapers, books, television, films, recorded music,
magazines, showing how wide and dense the structure of today's media is. 'Recreational' media such as newspapers and television have great bearing
on society. Not because the media control popular opinion, but because this media is the source of information on which the public feel qualified to

Media Literacy
Media literacy is defined as is the ability to Access, Analyze, Evaluate, Create, and Act using all forms of communication. There are five questions you
should ask when analyzing media. You should look at the purpose of the content, the media source, the framing, stereotypes and the media ecosystem.
Mass media can show current content that seems real, though, as viewers it is our duty to distinguish, and differentiate between "images of reality, and
structures of reality". Media typically targets the young viewers, who believe everything they see and read. The magazine article that I have chosen to
use with this paper is about Hurricane Harvey. It is posted by Newsweek. It...show more content...
They also tend to post their own views in some articles. I personally enjoy reading many of the articles posted by Newsweek, except for articles
pertaining to politics. I typically overlook those articles from any publisher.
The third object you should ask yourself when analyzing media is about framing the media content. Framing the media means you determine how
the choice of words might affect how the audience receive the information. In this article, I feel as if this article is the perfect example. If it were
written differently it would have a different outcome. In this article, a few Texas police officers are interviewed about the rescue missions to save
those victims affected in flooded areas. They are treated as the experts because they know the mission. This is their job. The organization they work
for the Texas police department. The sheriff deputies are quoted earliest in the story. They speak about the rescue mission. The deputies are quoted
most often in this article. One deputy is quoted as saying Hurricane Harvey made a "dramatic" difference in his responsibilities that he is used to
daily. He also says that hurricane Harvey is the worst flooding he has seen in 40 years in Texas. The reader would be able to better understand just
how bad the flooding might be by those choice of words.
Next, we have stereotypes. What stereotypes are presented in this article? According to the dictionary, astereotype is

God at all. After the accident Graham stopped being a priest and stopped praying as well. This is why I know that it was the loss of his wife in
particular that caused Graham to stop living out his Christian worldview. Lastly, I will now discuss the emotional, mental, and spiritual reactions I
personally had about the movie. I felt very saddened over the loss of Graham's wife because I could not even begin to know how awful it would be to
lose a spouse. I also found it very sad to watch the children deal with the loss of their mother. The moment at the dinner

Media Analysis Feminism

  • 1. Media Analysis Feminism Media Analysis My analysis of major themes and how the media participate in the construction of attitudes about gender and sexual orientation is predicated upon 16 articles drawn from three major news sources: Newsweek, The New York Times, and The Advocate. The articles were published in the months of January, February, and March. The selection of the articles was not random; I specifically chose articles whose titles and introductions were of particular interest. The three news sources, particularly the Times and The Advocate, published many articles related toLGBT issues–typically greater than a dozen for each weekly search–from which I selected only two per week. In sifting through the 16 articles, I identified three important...show more content... As in the case of all of the articles I examined for this analytical essay, the authors avoided insensitive language and euphemisms, which might have allowed them to construct their arguments in a less–than–candid way. My sense is that, based on the cohort of Newsweek articles, the magazine's authors and editors do care about marriage equality and social justice, but they are influenced by the dominant culture in perhaps believing that an issue is not really legitimate until it has been raised by heterosexual males. Gavin Newsom, especially, is given a lot of national coverage about marriage equality, despite his not being an LGBT person. Newsweek does a poor job of consulting members of the LGBT community about issues that directly affect them. Maybe the magazine's writers just are not comfortable enough to interject the thoughts, opinions, and arguments of LGBT people directly into their articles, thus [possibly] unintentionally reinforcing norms of heterosexual male power. The Advocate and The New York Times, in contrast, place very heavy emphasis on integrating the voices of members of the LGBT community, particularly 'L' and 'G.' The Advocate is, of course, a magazine whose primary audience, as mentioned above, is the LGBT community. The New York Times is published in a city with an active and influential LGBT community, and the paper–as a result–must serve their interests, too. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Media Representation Essay The majority of cast members in movies, and television shows, from the past and modern day seem to all share one thing in common: they are straight, white, and male. Once one becomes aware, it is not difficult to notice this everywhere. What is being noticed is the severe lack of well written, and well represented people of color, women, and members of the LGBT+ community. Representation, according to Rick Beach, is "the ways in which the media portrays particular groups, communities, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological perspective." This means there is usually only good representation for majorities, and bad representation for minorities. Normally, this means stereotypes are played up about people of color, women,...show more content... Now, especially in 2015, it seems as if more television shows have good representation. Shows like Elementary, Call of the Midwife, Sleepy Hollow, Orphan Black, and The 100 show women, people of color, and members or the LGBT+ communities in important roles, and positive lights (Tang). Nellie Andreeva in the article "Pilots 2015: The Year of Ethnic Castings", talks about the "noticeable shift towards minority casting" in late 2014, and early 2015, and how casting agents are now able to say how despite people of color once being rejected for almost any role on television they "feel like the tide has turned" and that they can now "pitch any actor for any role and [they] think that's good." However, now, with the introduction of more female writers and producers on television, it seems as if they may be part of the reason why this is happening. Shonda Rhimes, executive producer for popular diverse shows like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, "says she isn't 'diversifying' television, she's 'normalizing' it" (Williams). On a different level, Rebecca Sugar, writer of Steven Universe, has made her show quite diverse as well. Mey writes, "the three main characters (besides Steven) are all voiced by women of color, and (like Steven) it is easy to interpret [them] as people of color." James Michael–Nichols on Huffington Post also writes that the show contains very "heavy queer overtones." This means not only is Steven Universe a good role model for children, but that it also contains just about any type of diversity with a cast of mostly women and people of color, and characters that represent the LGBT+ community. This easily makes it one of the most diverse cartoons currently being aired on television. Overall, while it may not seem like a trend in the media, the introduction of new television shows containing diverse Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Paid Media Analysis Paid media is a traditional advertising that promotes content and drives exposure such as banner ads, paid search marketing, sponsorships and content syndication. It focuses in an effort to create brand awareness or new customer acquisition. However, it is usually expensive that requires you to be creative and able to deliver your message to your consumers at the same time. Owned media is digital properties that you have full control of the content such as corporate websites, blogs, communities, email newsletters and social media channels. It targets its brand's existing community and current customers. But it is time consuming that you need to be able to work with your team and build a community and value to the customer. • 5. Media Article Analysis Step 2. Media Article. The article "80 Percent of Americans Can't See The Milky Way Anymore" by Michelle Z. Donahue published in National Geographic summarizes a new study pertaining to light pollution. The media article focuses on Fabio Falchi and the team at the Light Pollution Science and Technology Institute (ISTIL) in Italy who recently announced "a new survey that quantifies nighttime sky quality for every region in the world"(Article). The explained methodology is done through using 35,000 ground–based observations as well as six months' worth of data from the Suomi National Polar orbiting Partnership Satellite. Through these investigations the team created an Atlas of the night sky. The conclusions described by the media article...show more content... The researchers developed the 'world Atlas of artificial sky luminance' as a means of mapping variations in light pollution around the globe. The baseline for the data begins with "Natural lighting levels (which) are governed by natural celestial sources, mainly the Moon, natural atmospheric emission (airglow), the stairs and Milky Way, and zodiacal light" (Research). The research article provides a baseline equation of what defines a clean moon–less night – "22 magnitude per square arcsecond in Johnson–Cousins V–brand. The results found that although the sky immediately above the source of the pollution was the most intense, light pollution managed to "function with peak at intermediate angles."(research) which the article later states is 30В° above the horizon. A surprising detail was that light pollution managed to extend beyond the horizon by a significant amount and still hold a substantial impact on the night sky. The exact statistics used by media sites are "that about 83% of the world's population and more than 99% of the U.S and European populations live under light–polluted skies. Due to light pollution, the Milky Way is not visible to more than one–third of humanity"(Research). As a surprising detail pertaining to population density, Canada has roughly 80% of its land–mass with pristine skies yet 97% of its population live in some form of light–polluted levels. All other G20 Countries are broken down in the same way. The obvious conclusion is that light pollution is a global problem that "has enveloped our planet in a luminous fog that prevents most of Earth's population from having the opportunity to observe our galaxy"(Research). Proposed solutions brought forth by the research article can only speculate like future Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Reflective Essay, Media Analysis When I started Composition I, I never thought that it will be so difficult. Before this class, I hardly managed to write a 200 word document; now, I am writing documents that contain 2000 words and I have been improving. Personally, it is very important for me to improve my writing skills because I want to be able to write a paper and have people understand it. During this semester, I have learned that a document is never completely perfect; every document could use improvement. The most difficult to write would have to be my Synthesis Essay, Media Analysis essay, and the Research Based Academic Argument Essay, which I will explain later. For these three essays, I had to first write it, then, I would send if to my teacher so that she could make comments and hep me improve my essay. After making the corrections needed, I would send the document again and I would receive more corrections. I learned that every time you reread your document, you can find grammatical or vocabulary errors that need to be changed. Also, I learned the importance of others...show more content... During this essay, I learned a plethora of great things. Honestly, I never had analyzed how marketing subtly persuades their audience to do what they want without the audience even noticing. I learned how every single aspect in a video plays an important role. The colors used, the way the characters are expressed, gender, age, and music are many aspects that we should analyze in the future while watching a video. For this essay, I used the MLA format more accurately. In the works cited page, I forgot to put italics the book titles. I effectively made use of quoting, as well as making correct source citations in my essay; I was more focused on the problem of obesity and omitted to analyze other aspects like the main character, music, colors, etc. The Media Analysis essay encouraged me to analyze the videos I watch with critical Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay on Media Effects Media Effects The Effects of Media on the Public's Opinion Mass media – have you ever taken the time to consider two articles about the same thing? Some may be more bias against a group or idea, while others keep a strict, non bias view. The way the media portrays events may change or even corrupt people's thoughts on certain public matters. This paper will dissect four articles on the Woodstock riots and show the relationships and differences between them. On a Sunday night, near the closing song of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, there were a few bonfires were reported. The firefighters, feeling they were under control, let these bonfires burn. Then Limp Bizkit came on, another hard–core band. In their song Breakstuff, the audience climbed...show more content... (PG 2 para. 3) his statement helped direct the blame at high prices. In the article They Must Have Run Out of Drugs, the author used a quote by Chris Melnyczenko to help place blame on the disgruntled youth. Melnyczenko said, They're destroying everything. (Pg. 1 para. 7) Another similar quote by an unknown person, Oh man they must of run out of drugs, (page 1 & 2) struck the author so much that he made it the title. Facts may be different or changed up to help exaggerate the authors' or companies' view points in the articles, Is Rock 'n' Rage Replacing Rock 'n' Roll? and Woodstock Gets Ugly. In the article, Is Rock 'n' Rage Replacing Rock 'n' Roll? the author spends the majority of his writing comparing the past two Woodstocks to the current one, barely touching on the subject of the riot. The article only stated what happened and the fact that the blame should be placed on the band, Limp Bizkit. The band was said to have urged the audience to break stuff. In the other article, Woodstock Gets Ugly, it is said that placing one hard–core band after another could be a mistake and may be the cause of the riots, or other happening, to be placed on the organizers of the event, the bands or the audience. This shows how the companies' or authors' views can be bias against certain groups or ideas by placing the blame on a single band, but a non bias paper places the blame all around. • 10. Essay about Reflection on the media "So many of the pictures we see are artificial, manufactured images. What happens when a girl or woman compares her real self with this narrow, unreal image of "perfection"?" (SB 127). Advertisers constantly use unrealistic models, male or female, to sell their products. These techniques target people's self esteem, and plants false images of perfection in society's mind. The media's techniques lower people's self esteem and damages their self image. I don't agree with the techniques the media uses. People should be able to go about their lives without constantly being concerned about how they look. A simple solution to any problem about self image through the media is to address the fact that everyone is beautiful in their own way. Promote loving yourself the way you are instead of influencing others to change for others. Have the media come together and agree that it is perfectly acceptable to teach others and influence them to be happy with who they are. All the problems addressed in the media cant't and won't be solved easily but it takes the first step of people to at least try. • 11. Reflective Essay On The Media The draft is coming along very well, in my opinion. I am really enjoying writing this piece because I like that I am acting as a journalist in it. I now understand something that many in our society do not. Therefore, exposing the truth behind our reliance on technology is something cathartic. I want others to read what I have written because I want them to understand the same things I now do about the corporations that silently own our data, and subsequently us. Furthermore, the biggest hurdle so far is trying to write over two–thousand words on my topic. It requires me to dig deep in order to overcome it, and to find as many examples as possible. I do not want to write meaningless things just to meet the word count, so I take this obstacle as a challenge. It is one that I know I defeat with a little more research and self–reflection on my opinion on the issue. The thing that keeps me going is that little voice in the back of my mind that I am letting others know about a topic that is not covered as much in the mainstream media. This is important to uncover the truth, and then expose those who are trying to keep those facts a secret from the general public. Also, I believe that the only thing you can do to help is to critique my paper during our conference. This will help me to see if I am going in the right direction with my piece. 2: Write a small case for or against social media. Is it helping in the spread of well–informed ideas or hurting? How does it play a role in social movements? 2: Social media is detrimental to our society, and especially to those within the community. In fact, this longing for likes has led to us valuing instant gratification above anything. Gone are the days when one could work diligently for something. Now, we focus too much on our social standing on these websites, rather than doing something worthwhile. We want to be loved by all, and measure our self–worth on how many "likes" something gains on Facebook or Instagram. We judge our friendships and relationships with others solely based on how long one's streak is, meaning how many days someone consecutively sent you a picture or video on Snapchat. What would happen if the internet was suddenly offline? Although this is an Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Dangers And Long-Term Effects Of Tanning Media Analysis 'Media' is the plural of the word 'medium', which often refers to different ways of communicating with other people; if the target is a large number of people, then it is called 'mass media'. There are many types of media, such as TV, radio, films, newspaper, Internet etc. The main purpose of media is to entertain; however they can also be used to persuade, inform, explain and advice. Media can be very powerful; therefore people are influenced and affected by them. The two texts have been written with different intentions and they both have specific target audiences. The first text, 'Sun Vampires' from The Big Issue, has been written to inform the readers of the dangers and long–term effects of tanning. Other purposes include: to ridicule the 'tanorexics', to advice people about the proper method of tanning and to warn those who are beginning to go on the sunbeds. The main target audience of this article is the younger generations of the society who are more likely to get addicted to tanning on sunbeds. Nevertheless to some extent, the authorial intent is to entertain and titillate leisurely readers who are looking for something to amuse the mind. In order to achieve the purpose and communicate the ideas to the readership, the writer uses vernacular language such as 'fork out', 'one hell of a habit' and 'let's face it', and modern names, e.g. Peter Andre and Bros – these techniques appeal greatly to the young people and therefore convey the message more effectively. The writer also grabs the attention of casual readers by using a light–hearted tone– as a result of this, the reader wouldn't be too shocked or frightened, thus willing to buy another copy of the magazine in the future. The second text, 'Face the fact – the sun is a real danger', from Derby Evening Telegraph (DET), have similar purposes to the 'Sun Vampires': to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 14. What Makes The World At Large From its beginnings, media has always been distributed through networks. Though the networks of today differ greatly from those of before, the basic concept remains the same. There are many definitions of what a network is, and there are numerous types of networks. Media is connected to, and makes use of, more than just one of these types of networks. With the use of today's expansive and complicated technology, more of these networks are being made accessible to media companies. This essay will be looking at what networks are, the essentially symbiotic relationship between them and media, and will analyse the effects of this relationship on the world at large. What is a network. Examples – biological, identity, governmental, electrical...show more content... It is made up of different networks, from the nervous system to the circulatory system. As argued by Terranova, these networks essentially bend the fabric of space–time in that they directly affect the connections between the two bodies and the time it takes for whatever is being communicated to get from one end to the other. Furthermore they "actively mould what they connect by creating new topological configurations and thus effectively contributing to the constitution of geopolitical entities such as cities and regions, or nations and empires."(Terranova, 2004) Networks outside the natural scientific spheres are what, to most observers, seem to have a greater hold over everyday life today, and the way this power is working with media is making it more powerful. Examples of networked media changing the world – television (audio/visual) and the Internet (two way) Despite the growth of the Internet around the world, television is still probably the largest and most influential media network. This extends across the world, as stated in The Three Ecologies, "Many people in the Third World will have televisions long before they have proper irrigation."(Guattari, 1989) While radio may have existed before it, television played a larger role in the spread of capitalism and the development of the global village. She is portrayed as being happy, relaxed, and carefree. It is interesting that the woman isn't shown wearing the watch. Rather than promote the watch itself, the woman's appearance is emphasized. The idea that "men act and women appear" is directly emphasized in this advertisement (Berger, 1977). Her rosy cheeks and wide smile attribute to the idea of a carefree lifestyle. In relation to the history of advertising, this advertisement falls under the typographic culture. There is little emphasis on the text, rather, on the image of the product being advertised (Postman, 1985). There is hardly any text to explain the product; rather the woman does the explaining. Her facial expression is the focal selling point of the advertisement. The overall message of the advertisement is to somewhat difficult to decode. There is some ambiguity in figuring out the underlying message, however. The main purpose of the advertisement is to sell a woman's watch. The underlying interpretation is that by buying this expensive watch, one will have time for more enjoyable activities and lead a stress–free life. When scanning through magazines to find a suitable advertisement, this particular one didn't stand out to me. It was relatively simple to decipher, not extremely flashy or controversial. In a modern world, dependent on continuous communication this is a very important question. If the world were not dependent on communication over large distances, schooling on a mass basis would not be possible or necessary. Most knowledge in traditional cultures was local knowledge, (Geertz 1983) traditions that were passed on through a local community, a very slow and long drawn out process. An average reader loves a good scandal, especially something to do with anyone in the public eye regularly, for instance: royalty, popstars, footballers and film stars. What society wants to read about is their private life and just how they live, and this puts pressure on the media to travel further to gather stories. An increase in the "paparazzi" has led to a great deal of pressure being put on the rich and famous, with every detail of their private life being examined, all for the sake of a story that will satisfy society. On the other hand, it cannot be doubted that media influences people's attitudes and outlooks by conveying a variety of information which is acquired from newspapers, books, television, films, recorded music, magazines, showing how wide and dense the structure of today's media is. 'Recreational' media such as newspapers and television have great bearing on society. Not because the media control popular opinion, but because this media is the source of information on which the public feel qualified to pass moral judgement and decisions. Media Analysis On Media Literacy Molly Whirley Mrs. Abby Lackey Comm 1010 09/12/2017 Media Literacy Media literacy is defined as is the ability to Access, Analyze, Evaluate, Create, and Act using all forms of communication. There are five questions you should ask when analyzing media. You should look at the purpose of the content, the media source, the framing, stereotypes and the media ecosystem. Mass media can show current content that seems real, though, as viewers it is our duty to distinguish, and differentiate between "images of reality, and structures of reality". Media typically targets the young viewers, who believe everything they see and read. The magazine article that I have chosen to use with this paper is about Hurricane Harvey. I personally enjoy reading many of the articles posted by Newsweek, except for articles pertaining to politics. I typically overlook those articles from any publisher. The third object you should ask yourself when analyzing media is about framing the media content. Framing the media means you determine how the choice of words might affect how the audience receive the information. In this article, I feel as if this article is the perfect example. If it were written differently it would have a different outcome. In this article, a few Texas police officers are interviewed about the rescue missions to save those victims affected in flooded areas. They are treated as the experts because they know the mission. This is their job. The organization they work for the Texas police department. The sheriff deputies are quoted earliest in the story. They speak about the rescue mission. The deputies are quoted most often in this article. One deputy is quoted as saying Hurricane Harvey made a "dramatic" difference in his responsibilities that he is used to daily. He also says that hurricane Harvey is the worst flooding he has seen in 40 years in Texas. The reader would be able to better understand just how bad the flooding might be by those choice of words. I will also discuss the obstacles that the main characters faced that deterred the character or characters from living out their worldview. After this experience Graham continues to pray in response to the alien spraying the poison gas in his sons face as well as that the inhaler and shot help him pull through. At the end of the movie it shows that Graham goes back to being a priest and starts living out his Christian worldview again. With that being said, I will now discuss the obstacle in the main character, Graham's, life that caused him to avoid staying true to his Christian worldview. This obstacle was the loss of his wife. The death of Graham's wife was not only hard for him because he lost her but because of how traumatic the accident was. This caused Graham to give up on his Christian faith and not believe in God at all. After the accident Graham stopped being a priest and stopped praying as well. This is why I know that it was the loss of his wife in particular that caused Graham to stop living out his Christian worldview. Lastly, I will now discuss the emotional, mental, and spiritual reactions I personally had about the movie.
