Unemployment In Canada Essay
Canada shed jobs in January as the unemployment rate in oil–rich Alberta hit its highest level in almost 20 years. Canada lost a net 5,700 jobs in the
first month of 2016, and the national unemployment rate increased to 7.2% from 7.1%. Unemployment is one of the major concerns of
macroeconomics. It means that a person who is 16 years old or above that unemployed, but is available for work, and has made specific efforts to find
a job during the previous four weeks.
Unemployment is divided into three types which are frictional unemployment, structural unemployment and cyclical unemployment. Firstly, frictional
unemployment is the portion of unemployment due to the normal working of labor market, such as skill matching problems. Secondly, structural
unemployment is the portion of unemployment that is due to changes in structure of economy likes technological advances will cause higher
unemployment. Last, cyclical unemployment will only occurs during the period of recessions and depressions.
Low rate of economy is one of the effects of unemployment. As...show more content...
First requirement is that economy must strongly enough to create the new jobs for the unemployed workers, as they need to pay the extra wages for
each additional worker who they hired. Thus, to give the organization to have the capital to hire new workers, central bank can act as a character by
applying expansionary monetary policy. Central bank can implement this policy by increasing the money supply through open market operation
(OMO). When purchasing the bond, the money supply (MS) is increasing, the interest rate (r) will fall. Lower interest rate will allow the households to
borrow more cheaply to buy what they want, that means investments (I) will increase. These stimulate enough demands to put the economy back on
track, aggregate demand (AD) increase, unemployment

Unemployment In Australia Essay
Unemployment: As can be seen in Fig 3 below, the unemployment rate in Australia has recently dropped below 5.8%, which is the lowest it has been
for over 20 months. This is despite the economy struggling over the previous 12 months due to a fall in investment in the mining industry. This has led
to the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) reducing interest rates on two occasions in the past 12 months to encourage the non–mining sectors of the
economy to fill this void and invest in resources, but some businesses are still reluctant to spend money. NAB economist Tapas Strickland said he
expected strong jobs growth to continue into 2016, stating " The forward indicators, such as jobs ads, suggest employment growth of 2% a year, and
when you do the calculations, that implies 20,000 (jobs added) per month". (Guardian, 2015)....show more content...
This growth rate was primarily driven by high consumer spending supported by both government spending and rising employment levels. According
to a report by the Australian Bureau of statistics, consumer spending contributed to two thirds of GDP growth in the fourth quarter. This came
despite a fall in income levels as Australian residents used their savings for spending purposes, and was also helped by a booming real estate sector
which was the largest contributor to the GDP growth in the fourth quarter. (Mehta, 2016). As can be seen in Fig.4 below, consumer spending in
australia increased to 231332 million in the last qtr of 2015 from 229576 million in the third qtr of 2015. There are numerous legal procedures to be

Unemployment Benefits Essay
Title: Unemployment Benefits Only Good for a Limited Amount of Time Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that extending unemployment
benefits strains an already overused and failing government program. Central Idea: Today, I would like to tell you about the problem of extending
unemployment benefits, as well as offer some possible solutions that our lawmakers should adopt instead of another extension. Introduction Millions
of Americans have lost their jobs and have joined the growing ranks of the unemployed recently as the recent recession gripped the U.S. In fact,
nearly one out of ten Americans are now unemployed and seeking a new job. I'm sure that most of you know someone who has been affected by the

Unemployment has become a major problem which affects our life, health, economy and community. So countries should build more companies and
factories in order to provide more opportunities and positions to respond to the need of the increased population. Moreover, there should be
unemployment insurance to help unemployed individuals in their financial problems till they find a job. It is important also to utilize the vocational
education along with other skills courses' in order to prompt the education and skills of the workers to meet the labour market need. It creates
negative affects to unemployed as they are jobless and suffer from worse prospects to find new job and those who are employed feel less secure to

Unemployment : A Socio Economic Challenge Essay
Introduction and Background Unemployment is defined as a situation that occurs when a person is seeking employment but is unable to find work
(Altbeker & Storme, 2013). Unemployment is a socio–economic challenge with economic costs that reduces economic wellbeing, reduces output and
wears down human capital (Lie, 2007). Such a cost makes unemployment a high priority in South Africa (Bridgstock, 2009). The South African
economy has been experiencing rising unemployment over many years. In 2011, the unemployment rate was at 24.2% and in 2013 it had increased to
25.2%, affecting the socio–economic status of communities and households in South Africa (Statistics South Africa, 2014). Employability is referred
to as the ability of an individual to get employed in a job that is appropriate to their educational standards. Employability has numerous definitions but
captures three components which are the ability to gain employment early without struggling for months to be desired by an employer, the ability to
maintain employment and make transitions between roles and jobs, lastly the ability to be independent in the labour market without assistance and still
gain employment. Employability is the possession of knowledge, skills, personal attributes and commercial understanding that allows individuals to be
able to contribute to the goals of the organisation and be highly productive immediately when hired. An attribute is defined as a person's characteristic
and quality. An

Unemployment Rate Among Black People
Unemployment varies among, class, gender, and rate. In the article, we look at the unemployment rate among black people. Indiana is one of the
five states where unemployment among black people is below national average. The state is looking for solutions such as placing a focus on
education, so that way it can provide support for easing into careers, and collaborate with local businesses to provide training for basic job skills.
There are also groups established such as the Indianapolis Urban League, and they help people summit resumes and provide career readiness training
for families. Ultimately, the unemployment rate has its roots in the problem of poverty. Those who start their lives in poverty, statically they will never

Unemployment Definition of Unemployment
The unemployment rate is the percentage of the US labor force that is unemployed. It is calculated by dividing the number of unemployed individuals
by the sum of the number of people unemployed and employed. An individual is counted as unemployed if they are over the age of 16 and actively
looking for a job, but cannot find one. Students, who choose not to work, and retirees, are not counted in the unemployment rate.
In March 2001:
Description
Total civilian population 211,171,000(Excluding those under 16, members of the military, andpersons in institutions)
– Not in Labor force 69,304,000 (Retired, students, individuals choosing not to work)= Labor force141,868,000...show more content...
The growth in the labor force depends upon the growth of the working age population and increases in the percentage of that group willing to work.
Projections are that the size of the group will continue to grow slightly more than one percent a year and that the percentage working will not increase
significantly. Under those conditions, the sustainable monthly growth in jobs is about 155,000. The last three months of 2000 have shown growth in
the labor force that is less than that sustainable growth rate.
Newspapers and magazines are writing about the slowing growth in the U.S. economy. References are pointing to the slowing growth in spending
which is resulting in cutbacks in production and in some cases employment. The result of that slowing growth is this month's increase in the
unemployment rate and decrease in employment.
In May of 1999, the Federal Reserve began a policy of slowing the rate of growth in the money supply and creating increases in short–term interest
rates. That policy lasted through November of 2000. The goal was to slow the rate of growth in spending in the economy to be more in line with the
growth in capacity. That policy has surely had an affect and evidence of that are beginning to appear in a slower growth in real gross domestic
products (GDP) in the last quarter of 2000, a rise in unemployment from October through February, and the slowing increase in the number of jobs.

There has been a constant fall in unemployment amongst black people. Society and their stereotypes about black people have a lot to do with it.
Discrimination is also a reason. Millions of African Americans live in communities that lack access to good jobs and good schools and suffer from
high crime rates. African American adults are about twice as likely to be unemployed as whites, black students delay their white peers in educational
completion and achievement, and African American communities tend to have higher than average crime rates. These issues have been persistent
problems. I chose to write on this issue because I am a black female that will be seeking employment and I am concerned about the wellbeing of my

Education is very important and is a big factor in why the unemployment rate is so high amongst black people. Having an education can improve
employment opportunities and lament the dropout rate in high schools. A lack of education is one of the primary problems within this issue and I
don't think some understand that if they possess better skills, more education and training, the likelihood of them getting employed will be at a much
higher rate. In most states around the country it is said that younger black people are applying for jobs that cannot read past a fifth grade level. That
goes back to how education is the key to having a greater chance at being employed. But having an inadequate education could be a reason as well.
There are schools around the country that do not have the resources needed to provide kids with the proper education to succeed, such as high quality
teachers and technology. Tuition has become much more expensive for secondary education and institutions are literally preying on students
financially. Many of our communities also lack a strategy for ensuring that kids are being educated for the jobs that will be there when they get out of
school. High black unemployment is a structural problem that has resulted from centuries of less access to education and higher–paying jobs. Sixty
years after the Supreme Court officially desegregated American schools; they remain largely segregated along racial and economic lines. Students from

Recommendation: My recommendation is to provide funding to expand the work placement program in the state of Wisconsin. The program will be
aimed at providing resources for those that are marginalized in the job search by offering services such as professional development and work search
assistance (Job Center). The program will also work to better match employees to their optimal job by identifying and matching their skill sets. This
program will continue to be state run and regulated (Job Center). Expansion of the program will also mean more community outreach, especially to
more rural areas that may be short on resources such as broadband connection and information technology. Major urban areas that have a large amount
of structurally unemployed individuals also need attention in providing a connection between employee and employer. Some of the funding for the
program's expansion can come from cuts to unemployment benefits that are likely too high to encourage individuals to seek new employment. To make
this idea more appealing to you colleague, Senator Fitzgerald, you can suggest that some of the marginalized and discouraged

Essay on Causes of Unemployment
The unemployment rate slowly started getting worse and it may have hit all time lows. With unemployment rates soaring the causes of this are
from aging, teenagers, and outsourcing even though some refute with saying it is self inflicted. One of the things that cause unemployment to
keep increasing is the age of people. Seeing as there is almost no family not affected by this great recession, there must have been a cause. "You are
aging as you are not employed, and nobody is looking to hire somebody who is old," (Aaronson, pg. 6). When older people are laid off they keep aging
and there are young kids coming out of college looking for the same job. Every single year more and more kids are graduating from college with

just yet and they are trying to compete for the same jobs as adults that have experience in the field and also have a degree from college already.
"Youth unemployment may have hit bottom and could increase in coming months and years," (Miller, 4th paragraph). The reason that the youth
unemployment could be going up in the future is because the old adult percentage of people working is going down and they are starting to hire
more teens and young adults. This is helpful to help hire more of the younger population but, this does not solve overall unemployment. The reason
that there is a high unemployment rate is because some of the work is leaving the country. This is the act that is called outsourcing. "China is
expanding," (Long terms, pg. 10). With China expanding it gives the U.S. more of a chance that they give their work to China or a different country.
The reason that we give our work away to other countries is because other countries such as China can complete the work for almost half of the cost
and sometimes even cheaper than that. "Overall economy is shrinking," (Aaronson, pg. 3). This is what happens when outsourcing is happening. As
long as outsourcing is happening our U.S. economy only has one thing to do and that is to shrink. The reason that it is shrinking is because businesses
large and small are

change from growth to decline. He explains that when the current recession (Dec. 2007–July 2009) began, that the women labor force was not altered
but that it kept increasing. The female labor force increased by a million throughout the time of the recession. But the months after the recession

to the author, does this help make up for the shrinking labor force? According to the author, even though labor productivity has increased, it is
unlikely that the economy can grow without long term growth in private employment. A big loss of private employment due to the recession still
has yet to regain, so it is difficult to think about the long term growth of employment. It has improved somewhat near the end of 2009, but the author
explains that the labor market still has a long way to go. It has about 25 percent of loss to makeup to get back at pre recession peak. 5. In your opinion,
is the author critical of programs like Obama Care and Dodd–Frank? In my opinion, the author is critical of programs like Obama Care and
Dodd–Frank. The author explains how the uncertainty of the future costs of Obama Care and Dodd– Frank and other regulations and taxes is leading
factor in the lack of hiring. The author is critical of these programs, based solely on the fact that we are unsure of the costs, and that near tax
implications will occur to cover these costs and that will eventually lead to less hiring, according to the author. Summary: From 2000–2009 this era is

California Unemployment Essay
Educating oneself about the economy is a rigorous task seeing as it has several different aspects to it. Unemployment and the related topics in the
chapter sparked an interest within me. Fortunately, I was able to find an article that covered this topic in a state I've come to love– California. The
article, "California adds 54,200 jobs in May; unemployment rate ticks up to 6.4%", provides visual representation of the data stated and provides
quotes and opinions from people among the Californian population. This produces additional support for the article. The fact that the situation is
occurring in California, along with visual representations, gave reason for my decision in choosing this article. The state of California added thousands

Employment is expressed with the mentioning of the addition of jobs California has provided for its people. For example, the demand for
construction workers will result in new jobs for individuals, whether its part time or full time job. This is counted as employment because these
people will become employed. These new employees are helping to benefit the economy of California by potentially influencing current unemployed
people to follow suit. The new addition of jobs and the newly found hope of those who were hired influence discouraged workers to go out and search
for a job, if successful, increasing the number of people in the states labor force. If hired, the individuals would contribute to certain aspects of the
economy because they would now be counted into the formula for labor force, or the unemployment rate. These aspects are taken as benefits to the
Californian economy although there was an increase in the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate is self–explanatory for the most part; it is the
percentage of the labor force that is unemployed1. California did experience an increase in this rate from 6.3% to 6.4%2, but it did not discourage the
population. As stated before, more individuals were able to join the labor force and expand the amount of members in the

Literature Review on Unemployment
Introduction
Unemployment is recognised as one of the most challenging social problems currently facing Australia. In the last two decades and more recently with
the global recession high levels of unemployment have become an established feature of the South Australian social and economic landscape, with
young people aged 15 to 24 years among those hardest hit by unemployment.
In the past quarter the unemployment rate in South Australia has remained steady at 5.6% (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2009) but this figure is
volatile and may increase next month. The youth unemployment rate, however, in South Australia remains at 21.9% with the Western and Northern
suburbs having significantly higher...show more content...
The absence of employment, therefore, can mean that many people do not have vital human needs met such as an opportunity to exercise control, to
use and develop skills and have contact with others.
The research literature shows a strong association between unemployment and ill health. Some illness is caused by unemployment whilst other health
problems are exacerbated by unemployment ( Smith, 1987; Mathers & Schofield,1998). An Australian summary of the health and unemployment
literature by Mathers and Schofield (1998) identified that unemployment has detrimental effects on mental health, physical health and health related
behaviours.
Mental Health
The evidence that unemployment has negative effects on mental health is strong. Mental health effects on young unemployed people include low self
esteem and confidence
( Gurney, 1980; Prause and Dooley, 1997), increased incidence of depression ( Patton and Noller, 1990; Winefield et al, 1993; West & Sweeting,
1996), stress related symptoms ( Hammarstrom, 1994) and higher levels of anxiety ( Morrell et al, 1994; West & Sweeting,1996). In their study,
Morrell et al (1998) find a strong association between unemployment in young 15 to 25 year olds and youth suicide.
Physical Health
Research has shown the links between unemployment and higher morbidity and mortality rates( Mathers and Schofield) where health outcomes are
poorer and premature deaths are

Causes Of Unemployment Essay
Unemployment is one the major economic problems which are affecting most of the countries in the world especially the developing countries.
Unemployment is a phenomenon where a person is actively searching for employment, but they are unable to find it. There are two immediate factors
causing unemployment, which include voluntary and involuntary unemployment. Voluntary unemployment majorly arises as a result of an individual
leaving the current job to search for another work. This unemployment may result when an individual is no longer satisfied with the working
conditions, salary or the current position isn't matching the skills. Involuntary unemployment majorly arises when an individual is laid off and is

This issue results in the graduating students being stranded to find a job since, even if there are companies and business opportunities being created, it
will be difficult to match the massive demand for jobs. Government policies can also contribute to unemployment. Privatization of the companies is
one of the major factors that can lead to joblessness in a country. When the country decides to privatize a company, it majorly leads to the retrenchment
of the workers unto which results in involuntary unemployment. The Government may come to this decision to as a result of poor performance of the
company and privatization majorly improves the company's performance. Policies such as the ones that aims at preventing foreign investments also
leads to joblessness since, it inhibits establishment of companies and businesses that would create employment for the citizens. Structural change is
also another primary causative agent of joblessness in a country. This unemployment occurs as a result of changes in the labor patterns, natural
disasters and the changes in the resource availability. One of the significant cases is when the available resources or raw materials get depleted. This
results in the individual who was employed losing their jobs leaving them unable to fit into other roles. Natural disasters also results in joblessness
since, in the event of such occurrences it leads to businesses being destroyed and this will likely lead to many people

The Classical and Keynesian theories of unemployment offer explanations to describe why unemployment rises in an economy. They are both different
school of thoughts and have different views when it comes to unemployment. The Classical school was created before Keynes and their theories were
seen as the staple theories to follow when it came to economic theory.
All Classical explanations of unemployment assume that the labour market clears and the theory of unemployment implies that the labour market
performance is being obstructed in some way. "The major characteristic of the Classical approach is that agents continuously optimize and markets
continuously clear; hence there can be no involuntary unemployment." (Lipsey and Chrystal 2011, p.586) The approach argues that unemployment is
the product of voluntary decisions made by everyday people who are choosing to do what they do, including spending some time out of
unemployment. "The Classical model in its purest form assumes that the labour market clears via real–wage adjustment, and that the demand for labour
depends only on the properties of the production function." (Hillier 1991, p.21) In this theory, it is presumed that the markets act as defined by the
idealized supply and demand model: the labour market is seen as though it were a single, stagnant market, illustrated by perfect competition, spot
transactions and institutions for double–auction bidding.

For many years, employers, sociologists, economists, and other various professions have argued the effects of technological advances replacing
current employment in the workforce. If the unemployment rate were to decrease, it would bring upon a mass of societal complications including

unemployment would create an overall psychological crisis. If all people, both women, and men were forced to unemployment, there would be an
outbreak of chaos that could lead to yet another revolution. People are happier when they feel they hold a significant purpose in society. Without that
purpose, what are humans here for? Furthermore, a depletion of jobs would create a significant gap in societal "classes". Stephen Hawking, a famous
physicist, and author suggests "Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine–produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up

of unemployment could result in the social breakdown when they reach unmanageable levels. Joblessness remains the fundamental cause of the social
evils commonly associated with high unemployment levels. These social problems cannot be predicted when they will occur, but they certainly will
occur when the unemployment becomes uncontrollable. The youth unemployment can be defined as a time bomb waiting to explode. These imminent

against giving an individual unemployment benefits to help save them money on their unemployment insurance rates. The insurance rates are based
upon the amount of benefits the unemployed receive. People will find it surprising that their unemployment benefits are being challenged. Employers
will try to deny a claim but if one is successful, the cost of the company will raise. Unemployment benefits are not only for the people who have lost
their jobs due to company downsizing but to people who have resigned or who were discharged for a reason beyond their control. The benefits are
given to people who are unemployed with the intension of seeking new employment. The benefits usually come in small amounts to cover basic needs.
You may receive unemployment benefit extensions for an additional thirty–four to fifty–three weeks during high unemployment. While receiving

Unemployment In Canada Essay

  • 1. Unemployment In Canada Essay Canada shed jobs in January as the unemployment rate in oil–rich Alberta hit its highest level in almost 20 years. Canada lost a net 5,700 jobs in the first month of 2016, and the national unemployment rate increased to 7.2% from 7.1%. Unemployment is one of the major concerns of macroeconomics. It means that a person who is 16 years old or above that unemployed, but is available for work, and has made specific efforts to find a job during the previous four weeks. Unemployment is divided into three types which are frictional unemployment, structural unemployment and cyclical unemployment. Firstly, frictional unemployment is the portion of unemployment due to the normal working of labor market, such as skill matching problems. Secondly, structural unemployment is the portion of unemployment that is due to changes in structure of economy likes technological advances will cause higher unemployment. Last, cyclical unemployment will only occurs during the period of recessions and depressions. Low rate of economy is one of the effects of unemployment. As...show more content... First requirement is that economy must strongly enough to create the new jobs for the unemployed workers, as they need to pay the extra wages for each additional worker who they hired. Thus, to give the organization to have the capital to hire new workers, central bank can act as a character by applying expansionary monetary policy. Central bank can implement this policy by increasing the money supply through open market operation (OMO). When purchasing the bond, the money supply (MS) is increasing, the interest rate (r) will fall. Lower interest rate will allow the households to borrow more cheaply to buy what they want, that means investments (I) will increase. These stimulate enough demands to put the economy back on track, aggregate demand (AD) increase, unemployment Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Unemployment In Australia Essay Unemployment: As can be seen in Fig 3 below, the unemployment rate in Australia has recently dropped below 5.8%, which is the lowest it has been for over 20 months. This is despite the economy struggling over the previous 12 months due to a fall in investment in the mining industry. This has led to the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) reducing interest rates on two occasions in the past 12 months to encourage the non–mining sectors of the economy to fill this void and invest in resources, but some businesses are still reluctant to spend money. NAB economist Tapas Strickland said he expected strong jobs growth to continue into 2016, stating " The forward indicators, such as jobs ads, suggest employment growth of 2% a year, and when you do the calculations, that implies 20,000 (jobs added) per month". (Guardian, 2015)....show more content... This growth rate was primarily driven by high consumer spending supported by both government spending and rising employment levels. According to a report by the Australian Bureau of statistics, consumer spending contributed to two thirds of GDP growth in the fourth quarter. This came despite a fall in income levels as Australian residents used their savings for spending purposes, and was also helped by a booming real estate sector which was the largest contributor to the GDP growth in the fourth quarter. (Mehta, 2016). As can be seen in Fig.4 below, consumer spending in australia increased to 231332 million in the last qtr of 2015 from 229576 million in the third qtr of 2015. There are numerous legal procedures to be followed when attempting to set up a new business in any foreign country. It should firstly be decided if the business will be run offshore or by a domestic entity. • 3. Unemployment Benefits Essay Title: Unemployment Benefits Only Good for a Limited Amount of Time Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that extending unemployment benefits strains an already overused and failing government program. Central Idea: Today, I would like to tell you about the problem of extending unemployment benefits, as well as offer some possible solutions that our lawmakers should adopt instead of another extension. Introduction Millions of Americans have lost their jobs and have joined the growing ranks of the unemployed recently as the recent recession gripped the U.S. In fact, nearly one out of ten Americans are now unemployed and seeking a new job. I'm sure that most of you know someone who has been affected by the recession either by...show more content... a.A recent study actually shows that very few people started working during the two to three weeks prior to the exhaustion of their unemployment benefits, but almost 30 percent started work just a week later when their benefits were about to run out (Mulligan). b.Basically, as long as they are getting paid to not work, many people will put off accepting a job. B.Extending unemployment benefits also encourages misuse unemployment benefits. 1.An article by Marianne Hill, "Unemployment Insurance: a Broken System," tells that: "when unemployment insurance was established as a nationwide program in 1935, it was hailed as a means of enabling workers to protect their standard of living between jobs". 2.The system was originally set up to help people who suddenly lose their job, but there is now wide misuse of the system which is only encouraged when the time period someone is allowed to collect benefits is extended time and again. 3.Types of misuse and fraud include claiming unemployment benefits while working another job that pays cash only which isn't reported, failing to actively seek employmen while collecting unemployment, and fraudulently using stolen social security numbers to claim unemployment. 4.Each year more than 16 million dollars worth of unemployment fraud is identified by Labor Department investigation––and that is likely just Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 5. Unemployment : A Socio Economic Challenge Essay Introduction and Background Unemployment is defined as a situation that occurs when a person is seeking employment but is unable to find work (Altbeker & Storme, 2013). Unemployment is a socio–economic challenge with economic costs that reduces economic wellbeing, reduces output and wears down human capital (Lie, 2007). Such a cost makes unemployment a high priority in South Africa (Bridgstock, 2009). The South African economy has been experiencing rising unemployment over many years. In 2011, the unemployment rate was at 24.2% and in 2013 it had increased to 25.2%, affecting the socio–economic status of communities and households in South Africa (Statistics South Africa, 2014). Employability is referred to as the ability of an individual to get employed in a job that is appropriate to their educational standards. Employability has numerous definitions but captures three components which are the ability to gain employment early without struggling for months to be desired by an employer, the ability to maintain employment and make transitions between roles and jobs, lastly the ability to be independent in the labour market without assistance and still gain employment. Employability is the possession of knowledge, skills, personal attributes and commercial understanding that allows individuals to be able to contribute to the goals of the organisation and be highly productive immediately when hired. An attribute is defined as a person's characteristic and quality. An Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Unemployment Rate Among Black People Unemployment varies among, class, gender, and rate. In the article, we look at the unemployment rate among black people. Indiana is one of the five states where unemployment among black people is below national average. The state is looking for solutions such as placing a focus on education, so that way it can provide support for easing into careers, and collaborate with local businesses to provide training for basic job skills. There are also groups established such as the Indianapolis Urban League, and they help people summit resumes and provide career readiness training for families. Ultimately, the unemployment rate has its roots in the problem of poverty. Those who start their lives in poverty, statically they will never escape it. They Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Unemployment Essay Unemployment Definition of Unemployment The unemployment rate is the percentage of the US labor force that is unemployed. It is calculated by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by the sum of the number of people unemployed and employed. An individual is counted as unemployed if they are over the age of 16 and actively looking for a job, but cannot find one. Students, who choose not to work, and retirees, are not counted in the unemployment rate. In March 2001: Description Total civilian population 211,171,000(Excluding those under 16, members of the military, andpersons in institutions) – Not in Labor force 69,304,000 (Retired, students, individuals choosing not to work)= Labor force141,868,000...show more content... The growth in the labor force depends upon the growth of the working age population and increases in the percentage of that group willing to work. Projections are that the size of the group will continue to grow slightly more than one percent a year and that the percentage working will not increase significantly. Under those conditions, the sustainable monthly growth in jobs is about 155,000. The last three months of 2000 have shown growth in the labor force that is less than that sustainable growth rate. Newspapers and magazines are writing about the slowing growth in the U.S. economy. References are pointing to the slowing growth in spending which is resulting in cutbacks in production and in some cases employment. The result of that slowing growth is this month's increase in the unemployment rate and decrease in employment. In May of 1999, the Federal Reserve began a policy of slowing the rate of growth in the money supply and creating increases in short–term interest rates. That policy lasted through November of 2000. The goal was to slow the rate of growth in spending in the economy to be more in line with the growth in capacity. That policy has surely had an affect and evidence of that are beginning to appear in a slower growth in real gross domestic products (GDP) in the last quarter of 2000, a rise in unemployment from October through February, and the slowing increase in the number of jobs. • 9. There has been a constant fall in unemployment amongst black people. Society and their stereotypes about black people have a lot to do with it. Discrimination is also a reason. Millions of African Americans live in communities that lack access to good jobs and good schools and suffer from high crime rates. African American adults are about twice as likely to be unemployed as whites, black students delay their white peers in educational completion and achievement, and African American communities tend to have higher than average crime rates. These issues have been persistent problems. I chose to write on this issue because I am a black female that will be seeking employment and I am concerned about the wellbeing of my future. This issue...show more content... Education is very important and is a big factor in why the unemployment rate is so high amongst black people. Having an education can improve employment opportunities and lament the dropout rate in high schools. A lack of education is one of the primary problems within this issue and I don't think some understand that if they possess better skills, more education and training, the likelihood of them getting employed will be at a much higher rate. In most states around the country it is said that younger black people are applying for jobs that cannot read past a fifth grade level. That goes back to how education is the key to having a greater chance at being employed. But having an inadequate education could be a reason as well. There are schools around the country that do not have the resources needed to provide kids with the proper education to succeed, such as high quality teachers and technology. Tuition has become much more expensive for secondary education and institutions are literally preying on students financially. Many of our communities also lack a strategy for ensuring that kids are being educated for the jobs that will be there when they get out of school. High black unemployment is a structural problem that has resulted from centuries of less access to education and higher–paying jobs. Sixty years after the Supreme Court officially desegregated American schools; they remain largely segregated along racial and economic lines. Students from Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Unemployment Essay Options: Creating and enhancing a work placement program in every state will allow discouraged and marginalized workers a resource for finding employment that matches their skill set. This will allow the employee to be situated in a position where they can optimize their skill level, thus optimizing production, and giving the employee bargaining power, which can be used to receive benefits and a wage level that best suits their skill level (Bunzel). Additionally, if the work placement program enhances workforce participation, then there will be greater competition for employment, which should lead employees to find jobs that they are most suited for, and thus producing better job security, more efficient output levels, and higher...show more content... Currently, the site has a lot of resources for users, however, if someone doesn't have access to broadband, they may be unable to access these resources. Therefore, there needs to be more outreach to marginalized workers. Recommendation: My recommendation is to provide funding to expand the work placement program in the state of Wisconsin. The program will be aimed at providing resources for those that are marginalized in the job search by offering services such as professional development and work search assistance (Job Center). The program will also work to better match employees to their optimal job by identifying and matching their skill sets. This program will continue to be state run and regulated (Job Center). Expansion of the program will also mean more community outreach, especially to more rural areas that may be short on resources such as broadband connection and information technology. Major urban areas that have a large amount of structurally unemployed individuals also need attention in providing a connection between employee and employer. Some of the funding for the program's expansion can come from cuts to unemployment benefits that are likely too high to encourage individuals to seek new employment. To make this idea more appealing to you colleague, Senator Fitzgerald, you can suggest that some of the marginalized and discouraged Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Essay on Causes of Unemployment The unemployment rate slowly started getting worse and it may have hit all time lows. With unemployment rates soaring the causes of this are from aging, teenagers, and outsourcing even though some refute with saying it is self inflicted. One of the things that cause unemployment to keep increasing is the age of people. Seeing as there is almost no family not affected by this great recession, there must have been a cause. "You are aging as you are not employed, and nobody is looking to hire somebody who is old," (Aaronson, pg. 6). When older people are laid off they keep aging and there are young kids coming out of college looking for the same job. Every single year more and more kids are graduating from college with degrees and the...show more content... Since, they are in school; it is very hard to have a job with the amount of credit hours that kids will be taking. These kids also don't have a degree just yet and they are trying to compete for the same jobs as adults that have experience in the field and also have a degree from college already. "Youth unemployment may have hit bottom and could increase in coming months and years," (Miller, 4th paragraph). The reason that the youth unemployment could be going up in the future is because the old adult percentage of people working is going down and they are starting to hire more teens and young adults. This is helpful to help hire more of the younger population but, this does not solve overall unemployment. The reason that there is a high unemployment rate is because some of the work is leaving the country. This is the act that is called outsourcing. "China is expanding," (Long terms, pg. 10). With China expanding it gives the U.S. more of a chance that they give their work to China or a different country. The reason that we give our work away to other countries is because other countries such as China can complete the work for almost half of the cost and sometimes even cheaper than that. "Overall economy is shrinking," (Aaronson, pg. 3). This is what happens when outsourcing is happening. As long as outsourcing is happening our U.S. economy only has one thing to do and that is to shrink. The reason that it is shrinking is because businesses large and small are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Unemployment What trend does the author discuss in the first few paragraphs? In the first few paragraphs the author examines the women labor force and the constant change from growth to decline. He explains that when the current recession (Dec. 2007–July 2009) began, that the women labor force was not altered but that it kept increasing. The female labor force increased by a million throughout the time of the recession. But the months after the recession ended, the growth of women labor force stopped and a reversal occurred. The labor force was lower and was constant throughout 2010, and 2011 but was still much higher compared to before the recession. In 2012, the female labor force grew rapidly by about a million and since mid 2013, it has not risen...show more content... It is a lost decade, because the labor force shrunk between the years 2000–2009. 4. Labor productivity has grown over the last fifteen years. According to the author, does this help make up for the shrinking labor force? According to the author, even though labor productivity has increased, it is unlikely that the economy can grow without long term growth in private employment. A big loss of private employment due to the recession still has yet to regain, so it is difficult to think about the long term growth of employment. It has improved somewhat near the end of 2009, but the author explains that the labor market still has a long way to go. It has about 25 percent of loss to makeup to get back at pre recession peak. 5. In your opinion, is the author critical of programs like Obama Care and Dodd–Frank? In my opinion, the author is critical of programs like Obama Care and Dodd–Frank. The author explains how the uncertainty of the future costs of Obama Care and Dodd– Frank and other regulations and taxes is leading factor in the lack of hiring. The author is critical of these programs, based solely on the fact that we are unsure of the costs, and that near tax implications will occur to cover these costs and that will eventually lead to less hiring, according to the author. Summary: From 2000–2009 this era is called the lost decade due to the shrinking of the labor force. In between these years occured the recession, which started about the end of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. California Unemployment Essay Educating oneself about the economy is a rigorous task seeing as it has several different aspects to it. Unemployment and the related topics in the chapter sparked an interest within me. Fortunately, I was able to find an article that covered this topic in a state I've come to love– California. The article, "California adds 54,200 jobs in May; unemployment rate ticks up to 6.4%", provides visual representation of the data stated and provides quotes and opinions from people among the Californian population. This produces additional support for the article. The fact that the situation is occurring in California, along with visual representations, gave reason for my decision in choosing this article. The state of California added thousands ...show more content... Employment is expressed with the mentioning of the addition of jobs California has provided for its people. For example, the demand for construction workers will result in new jobs for individuals, whether its part time or full time job. This is counted as employment because these people will become employed. These new employees are helping to benefit the economy of California by potentially influencing current unemployed people to follow suit. The new addition of jobs and the newly found hope of those who were hired influence discouraged workers to go out and search for a job, if successful, increasing the number of people in the states labor force. If hired, the individuals would contribute to certain aspects of the economy because they would now be counted into the formula for labor force, or the unemployment rate. These aspects are taken as benefits to the Californian economy although there was an increase in the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate is self–explanatory for the most part; it is the percentage of the labor force that is unemployed1. California did experience an increase in this rate from 6.3% to 6.4%2, but it did not discourage the population. As stated before, more individuals were able to join the labor force and expand the amount of members in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Essay on Literature Review on Unemployment Literature Review on Unemployment Introduction Unemployment is recognised as one of the most challenging social problems currently facing Australia. In the last two decades and more recently with the global recession high levels of unemployment have become an established feature of the South Australian social and economic landscape, with young people aged 15 to 24 years among those hardest hit by unemployment. In the past quarter the unemployment rate in South Australia has remained steady at 5.6% (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2009) but this figure is volatile and may increase next month. The absence of employment, therefore, can mean that many people do not have vital human needs met such as an opportunity to exercise control, to use and develop skills and have contact with others. The research literature shows a strong association between unemployment and ill health. Some illness is caused by unemployment whilst other health problems are exacerbated by unemployment ( Smith, 1987; Mathers & Schofield,1998). An Australian summary of the health and unemployment literature by Mathers and Schofield (1998) identified that unemployment has detrimental effects on mental health, physical health and health related behaviours. Mental Health The evidence that unemployment has negative effects on mental health is strong. Mental health effects on young unemployed people include low self esteem and confidence ( Gurney, 1980; Prause and Dooley, 1997), increased incidence of depression ( Patton and Noller, 1990; Winefield et al, 1993; West & Sweeting, 1996), stress related symptoms ( Hammarstrom, 1994) and higher levels of anxiety ( Morrell et al, 1994; West & Sweeting,1996). In their study, Morrell et al (1998) find a strong association between unemployment in young 15 to 25 year olds and youth suicide.

Unemployment is a phenomenon where a person is actively searching for employment, but they are unable to find it. There are two immediate factors causing unemployment, which include voluntary and involuntary unemployment. Voluntary unemployment majorly arises as a result of an individual leaving the current job to search for another work. This unemployment may result when an individual is no longer satisfied with the working conditions, salary or the current position isn't matching the skills. Government policies can also contribute to unemployment. Privatization of the companies is one of the major factors that can lead to joblessness in a country. When the country decides to privatize a company, it majorly leads to the retrenchment of the workers unto which results in involuntary unemployment. The Government may come to this decision to as a result of poor performance of the company and privatization majorly improves the company's performance. Policies such as the ones that aims at preventing foreign investments also leads to joblessness since, it inhibits establishment of companies and businesses that would create employment for the citizens. Structural change is also another primary causative agent of joblessness in a country. This unemployment occurs as a result of changes in the labor patterns, natural disasters and the changes in the resource availability. One of the significant cases is when the available resources or raw materials get depleted. This results in the individual who was employed losing their jobs leaving them unable to fit into other roles. Natural disasters also results in joblessness since, in the event of such occurrences it leads to businesses being destroyed and this will likely lead to many people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. The Classical and Keynesian theories of unemployment offer explanations to describe why unemployment rises in an economy. They are both different school of thoughts and have different views when it comes to unemployment. The Classical school was created before Keynes and their theories were seen as the staple theories to follow when it came to economic theory. All Classical explanations of unemployment assume that the labour market clears and the theory of unemployment implies that the labour market performance is being obstructed in some way. "The major characteristic of the Classical approach is that agents continuously optimize and markets continuously clear; hence there can be no involuntary unemployment." (Lipsey and Chrystal 2011, p.586) The approach argues that unemployment is the product of voluntary decisions made by everyday people who are choosing to do what they do, including spending some time out of unemployment. "The Classical model in its purest form assumes that the labour market clears via real–wage adjustment, and that the demand for labour depends only on the properties of the production function." (Hillier 1991, p.21) In this theory, it is presumed that the markets act as defined by the idealized supply and demand model: the labour market is seen as though it were a single, stagnant market, illustrated by perfect competition, spot transactions and institutions for double–auction bidding. If the unemployment rate were to decrease, it would bring upon a mass of societal complications including sociological issues, a gap between societal classes, and inferior choices that come with excess leisure time. A loss of work due to technological advances create a mass of sociological issues to society. The effect was so severe that a term was coined to describe the fallout: regional depression." In comparison to the women being kicked out of their new roles, they were also forced into a "regional depression." As a result, they began protesting their rights. Unavoidably, the increase of unemployment would create an overall psychological crisis. If all people, both women, and men were forced to unemployment, there would be an outbreak of chaos that could lead to yet another revolution. People are happier when they feel they hold a significant purpose in society. Without that purpose, what are humans here for? Furthermore, a depletion of jobs would create a significant gap in societal "classes". Stephen Hawking, a famous physicist, and author suggests "Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine–produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution,". Queen Elizabeth I also protests new "inventions" replacing human work by admitting "It would assuredly bring to them ruin by depriving them of employment, thus making them beggars." A significant aspect of robots replacing humans is extreme inequality. Those who are replaced, such as cashiers, accountants, travel agents, and various types of operators, are now shoved down to the lowest class in society. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net

All of these trends have significant implications for Orange County's education and workforce development systems. The Orange County Development Board and Orange County Business Council's 16th annual workforce indicators report seeks to prepare the region's workforce stakeholders – from CEOs to college administrators to entry–level workers – to face these issues and preserve the competitive advantages that have been – and are –– the foundation of Orange County's economy. How should local policymakers, businesses, and educational institutions respond to the changes and trends outlined in this report? First, they need to recognize where Orange County is potentially vulnerable. While the skills gap, for example, is a nationwide issue, it may particularly affect Orange County because of its relatively poor ability to retain young workers and key industries in fields disproportionately affected by this trend.
