When we started looking at the driving experiences of Utah’s public
employees, a few things stood out that we thought we should share with
you. Did you know that in the last 5 years you and your co-workers have
experienced over 3,400 auto claims? From July 2013 through June 2014
there were 865 crashes. In July 2014 employees experienced an all-time
monthly high of 130 auto claims. That means that you and your
coworkers experience almost 6 accidents per workday, or one accident
every hour and 20 minutes.
Do you know that it costs around $1000 to repair vehicles involved in
even the smallest auto accidents? What does that mean for you? Here’s
the big picture. Over the last 5 years State Risk Management has paid
out almost $7,000,000 in auto repairs caused by vehicle crashes. Each of
these claims was paid with taxpayer dollars.
Consider further that the $7,000,000 total did not include money spent
on medical bills, time off, workers’ compensation costs, or the emotional
consequences of an accident or injury.
Here’s an even more serious concern. Across the state of Utah, one
person is killed by a car crash every 37 hours.
All of us need to be more careful to reduce accidents and, more
importantly, to avoid the serious risks that face us whenever we get
behind the wheel.
Background:
This excerpt is from a Defensive
Driver Training Course that I
created, with Subject Matter
Experts, for the State of Utah in
2015. It was decided that a
conversational lesson format
would help illustrate the key
points and increase overall
retention rate, reducing future
accidents. We needed to
present statistics that the
learner could understand and
relate to while adding a “wow”
factor.

5. Concept to
Creation: Testing
the Untestable
Most skills can’t be practiced until they
are put to use. Standard tests do little
to actually gauge skill use and
effectiveness. This section of the
course created for the State of Utah
maps out 16 different stories that the
learner can choose from and apply the
concepts they have learned so far from
the Active Shooter Training Developed
for the State of Utah. Each Decision
was carefully mapped out and
designed to provide knowledge testing
and application.
