Safe Kids Upstate Internship Overview
1. Internship Overview

Emmy Williams
Clemson University
2. Safe Kids Upstate
Safe Kids Upstate is one of five divisions within the Bradshaw Institute for Community Child
Health & Advocacy, led by Children’s Hospital of Greenville Health System.
Mission: Prevent unintentional injuries in the Upstate. SKU learns the injury trends so we can
educate the family on how to protect their child and empower them to act.
Vision: Keeping our kids safe in the Upstate.
Values: Together we create a culture of safety with integrity, respect, trust and openness.
3. Social Media
● When I first began at Safe Kids, I recognized an
immediate need that I could assist with in the form of
Safe Kids social media.
● With brand recognition being such an important
factor in today’s society, I felt like I could help Safe
Kid’s social media presence be stronger.
● I updated Safe Kids Twitter and Instagram accounts
and made sure to share and retweet our partner’s
social media as well to encourage partnerships
within the community.
5. Google Drive Organization
● The next area where I saw that I could help Safe Kids was
organizing their Shared Drive.
● This drive was a folder that was shared among the staff
members that had numerous folders inside that contained even
more folders.
● I was able to merge the information in the Shared Drive onto
Google Drive and organize it based on topic and if it fell under
Greenville, Pickens, or Oconee County.
● Merging the information onto Google Drive also allowed
co-workers to simultaneously work on projects and not have to
email updated versions of projects to every staff member.
7. Safe Kids App
● Another aspect of Safe Kids where I thought I could improve
upon was developing an app.
● It listed various services that Safe Kids offered such as:
○ Why Safe Kids is needed in the Upstate area
○ Safety tips based on age
○ Child passenger safety based on age
○ How to book a car seat inspection appointment
○ Car seat Inspection locations
○ Links to car seat recalls and email notifications anytime
there is a recall on a car seat
○ A list of coalition partners and how people can get involved
○ A direct link to our twitter feed
17. Safety Tip Brochures
● One aspect of Safe Kids Upstate is Child Passenger Safety.
● Child Passenger Safety technicians are trained in properly fitting a child in a
car seat, however, some safety questions are asked by parents that CPS
technicians need Safe Kids’ help answering.
● I saw this as an issue I could directly solve. I coordinated with my boss and
other professionals at my workplace to create brochures that are divided by
age level and address car seat information at length and listed all our
inspection sites.
● The brochures also list general safety tips such as Burns/Scalds Prevention,
Bike Safety, Pedestrian Safety, Medication Safety, Water Safety, Sleep
Safety, Choking and Strangulation Safety and also safety tips for children
with special needs as well as Holiday Safety.
● The brochures are being placed in every inspection site as well as local
businesses in Greenville County and are being used as educational tips for
parents as well as advertising for Safe Kids.
19. Car Seat Information
● I also created flyers that helped CPS technicians and families
determine which car seat would be best suited for them based on
height and weight of the child and price of the car seat.
● I also helped create an online booking website for car seat
inspections and created a tutorial for inspections stations so that
they can manage admin pages.
● I created an inventory list for inspection stations as well so that they
could keep track of inventory, materials needed, and also the date
that the inventory was ordered.
21. Powerpoints
● I helped create Powerpoints for Safe Kids focusing on Water
Safety, Home Safety, Child Passenger Safety, and Pedestrian Safety
that could be shown at educational events or shown at schools
around the Upstate.
23. Surveys
● Google Surveys were one of the ways that I felt like I could impact
Safe Kids the most.
● Using these surveys, Safe Kids could easily gauge participation in
events, customer satisfaction, feedback, event requests, and
interest in opening a car seat inspection station.
● I also translated surveys into Spanish where there was a high
Spanish speaking population.
26. Random Acts of Kindness
● The Bradshaw Institute for Community Child Health & Advocacy
has several different divisions, including Safe Kids Upstate.
● One division is School Based Health. I shadowed a staff member
from School Based Health that went into the middle schools of
Greenville County to promote health and wellness.
● I helped hand out hearts for Random Act of Kindness month that
had encouraging messages on them for students.
28. Nurturing Developing Minds Conference
● The Bradshaw Institute for Community Child Health & Advocacy
helped host a Nurturing Developing Minds Conference that had
leading Pediatricians presenting on topics such as:
○ The Future of Community Based Prevention in Early Childhood
○ Comprehensive Wellness for Transition Aged Youth
○ Early Intervention Services for Infants and Toddlers
○ Advocacy for Children with Disabilities
○ The Influence of Digital Media on Developing Children
○ Selective Mutism
○ Treatment of Children with ADHD
○ Emerging Opportunities for Child Advocates
● I helped behind the scenes to assist speakers and helped with the
logistics of planning the conference.
30. Safe Kids at The Drive
● The Bradshaw Institute of Community Child Health & Advocacy and
the Greenville Drive Baseball Team partnered together to host a
“Driving Safety Home” day.
● Students were selected from the various schools that participated
in the Safe Kids Safe Schools Program to participate in a parade on
the baseball field and be recognized during the game.
● I helped set up booths to give out informational pamphlets and
interactive games on topics such as Water Safety, Home Safety,
Fire Safety, Pedestrian Safety, Sports Safety, and Medication Safety.
32. Get Out and Play Day at the Zoo
● Safe Kids Upstate participated in the Greenville Zoo’s “Get Out and
Play Day”.
● Safe Kids Upstate’s booth consisted of information on sports safety,
child passenger safety, medication safety, and water safety.
● We focused a lot on water safety and had an interactive activity to
demonstrate the importance of wearing a life jacket.
● Data shows that most children do not think they need to wear a life
jacket if the boat is not moving. However, a boat can sink in as little
as 10 seconds, so we asked children to try and unbuckle a life
jacket, put it on, and then rebuckle it in 10 seconds.
● This was to teach children that they need to wear their life jacket in
all circumstances.
