2. The Pond
• The pond is an artificial water tank designed for fish farming.
It naturally keeps the water in the landscape. Part of the pond
is a tank, natural bottom, dam and technical equipment
necessary to control the water level. People can easily drain
the pond when they need to.In the Czech Republic, fish
farming has a long tradition, dating back to the 12th century,
when in 1115 the oldest documented pond was founded in
Bohemia. In the Czech Republic, fish farming was always
supported by the Vítkovec family, later by the Rosenbergs and
the Schwarzenbergs.
3. • Fish farming experienced the biggest boom after the
discovery of a three-stage method of fish farming in 15th
century. The new method has produced excellent results. At
that time, the Rosenberg family took a significant part in
fishpond building. At this time, the most famous Czech fishers
such as Josef Štěpánek Netolický, Jakub Krčín of Jelčany
appeared on the scene.
4. Josef Štěpánek Netolický
• He founded or expanded ponds in Eastern Bohemia and in
Třeboň, where he worked in the Rožmberks. His most famous
works include the Horusický Pond, the Opatovický Pond, the
Velký Tisý Pond and the Kaňov Pond. In order to supply the
ponds with fresh water, he has built the Golden Sewer, which
has worked to this day.
5. • He also worked as a builder, designed houses and built Třeboň
fortifications. The appearance of the fortifications from 1525-
26 is still visible today. The main initiator of fortification work
was Jindřich VII. of Rosenberg. Josef Štěpánek Netolický used
his experience with water structures here because the water
was part of the fortification.
6. Jakub Krčín
• He hadn't completely finished his studies in water
management at Charles University in Prague. In 1561 he
entered the service of the Rosenbergs, thanks to the meeting
Eva von Rosenberg. In 1569 he became regent of the
Rosenberg estate. In these positions, he contributed to the
economic prosperity of the Rosenberg estate. At first he did
not get along with Petr Vok, so the Rosenberg ruler sent him
to Prague, where he participated in the competition for the
construction of an aqueduct at Prague Castle. He won this
competition in the competition of Italian builders and the
remains of his aqueduct are still visible at Prague Castle.
7. • In the construction of ponds in Třeboňsko, he followed up
Josef Štěpánek Netolický. He build a lot of ponds and he
also expanded some others. In 1571 he built the pond
Nevděk (today's Svět), because of which he had demolished
part of Třeboň. Since 1584, he had been building the largest
Rožmberk pond for six years, located directly on the
Lužnice River. In order to protect it, a new river was
created, along with its construction, to transfer the flood
flows of the Lužnice River to Nežárka.
