HARNESS DATA-DRIVEN INSTRUCTION Connellsville Area School District CASE STUDY YOUNG STUDENTS STAY ON TASK AND MOTIVATED TO LEARN CHALLENGE Becky Dix is a school librarian at Springfield Township Elementary School in Normalville, PA. Although not formally titled, she is also affectionately known as the school’s Technology Integration Coach. Springfield Township Elementary is part of the Connellsville Area School District, which is home to eight elementary schools, a junior high school, senior high school and career and technical center. With a few thousand students throughout the district, Becky was challenged with finding a way to help engage, motivate and assess their students. With limited funding and multiple ways to use it, Becky had to find a solution that met the needs of the students, teachers and administration. SOLUTION Becky knew how difficult it could be to engage the younger students while creating a fun, active learning environment. After first using whiteboard technology, she was interested in the many educational technology options available to her school. Upon investigation, the Connellsville Area School District administration decided on Turning Technologies’ ResponseCard NXT and TurningPoint polling software. After implementing the NXT clickers in grades 2 – 6, the younger students are now engaged throughout the day and are focusing more on instruction. Immediate feedback from the ResponseCard NXT clickers and TurningPoint software allows the teachers to conduct formative knowledge checks throughout class. If a student is having difficulty understanding the subject matter, the teacher is now aware and can provide additional assistance to the student. This helps create data-driven decision making and can shape curriculum for an entire class, building or district. CONCLUSION After nearly two years of use, the teachers absolutely love it. The decision to purchase ResponseCard NXT clickers has provided teachers with the future opportunity to assess their students with self-paced testing. TurningPoint polling software allows teachers to create tests and answer keys which can then be administered. Students then enter answers to test questions via ResponseCard NXT clickers. To maximize return on investment, Becky plans to take advantage of this opportunity in the near future. She is also taking an interest in learning more about the products from Turning Technologies to train the faculty on day-to-day use of TurningPoint and ResponseCard clickers.
