Design
 Plan the structure of the test to include a proper sampling of the content which acts as the blueprint for the test.
 Test length is critical to the reliability of the test. True/False questions usually require a minimum of 30 seconds, and multiple choice require a minute.
 Have another teacher review your test for clarity of directions and questions.
Content
 Provide clear and concise directions at the
beginning of the assessment.
 Begin with a few simple questions to ease student test anxiety and build confidence.
 Tests should include homogenous content.
 Write some application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation questions.
 Insert a “think time”.PPT slide with just the question prior to the TurningPoint polling slide.
 Place the most difficult question toward the end of the exam.
 Assessments should not be tricky. They should be designed to assess competency.
 Do not use test content that you have not recently taught.
 Tests that are not properly aligned with the course intended learning outcomes and what was taught in class.
 Do not include only questions that assess knowledge of facts.
 Tests should not be are too short, or they will provide an inadequate sample of content.
 Assessments immediately following a vacation.
 Grammatical errors.
 Extraneous ideas and skills.
