3. TDR mandate
• The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical
Diseases (TDR) is a global programme of scientific collaboration that
helps facilitate, support and influence efforts to combat the diseases
of poverty e.g. TB, malaria and neglected tropical diseases
• TDR is co-sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank and WHO
• In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, we contribute to the TDR-Joint
Coordinating Board (JCB); support research grants (Impact Grants
Scheme, migration health, IHR and security preparedness); host the
TDR-Regional Training Centre (RTC) at the Pasteur Institute, Tunis,
Tunisia; and support capacity-building activities

4. TDR-JCB Composition
The TDR-JCB has 24 members:
• 12 financial contributors (MoU: para 2.2.1): government representatives,
selected by contributors to TDR resources
• 6 representatives of WHO regions (MoU: para 2.2.2): selected by WHO
regional committees from countries directly affected by the diseases dealt
with by TDR or those providing technical or scientific support to the TDR
• 6 representatives of other cooperating parties (MoU: para 2.2.3): designated
by the JCB itself from among the remaining cooperating parties
• 4 co-sponsors (MoU: para 2.2.4): representatives of the four United Nations
agencies that comprise the standing committee (UNICEF, UNDP, the World
Bank, WHO)

7. Vacancy for TDR-JCB Membership (20232026)
• Members of the JCB serve for a period of 4 years and may be
reappointed
• From the Region, Egypt (under paragraph 2.2.2 of the MoU: governments
selected by WHO regional committees) is currently a member of the
Board. The term of office of Egypt will expire on 31 December 2022
• The Regional Office invited Member States to apply to vacancies that
exist under paragraph 2.2.2. Subsequently, Egypt and Morocco applied
for selection for JCB membership for the period 20232026

8. Selection process
Member States are invited to vote for the selection of:
• Egypt (three previous rounds of membership, the last during
20192022);
• Morocco (one previous round of membership, the last during
19871989)
for membership of the TDR-JCB for 20232026.
