Case Study about the implementation of the Periotheus powerplant management at the VERBUND AG

1. Successful expansion of Periotheus
To celebrate the successful development cooperation with VERBUND AG and the completed
implementation of Periotheus as a production data management system, we will show the
challenges in implementing the software and how they were overcome.
The Challenge
In 2014 VERBUND made the decision to replace the existing main dispatcher information
system. The requirements for this new software solution were extremely complex. A series
of existing systems had to be replaced and several existing external systems had to be
integrated.
A key function which should be covered by the new software solution was the ability to
save production data, such as planned and actual values, flow data from power stations
or hydrological information on power station groups or individual machines. In addition
a significant reduction in the system‘s maintenance requirements was expected from the
improved recording and increased transparency.
In order to avoid redundancies and make data usage as transparent as possible, the data
flows were to be fundamentally restructured as part of the project. Simplified data access
was also expected from the conversion. VERBUND also expected a reduction in the number
of applications used from the implementation of a new production data management system.
VisoTech‘s Solution
On account of the longstanding good cooperation with VERBUND AG, VisoTech was an
auspicious partner for the implementation of the project.
Again the base was VisoTech‘s product suite, Periotheus, which at the time was already
being used as a schedule management system at VERBUND. Thanks to its flexibility and the
extensive possibilities for connecting third party systems, Periotheus was also predestined to
be the starting point for this project.
In order to accommodate the special requirements for a production data management sys-
tem, an expansion of the Periotheus Suite was both specified and subsequently implemented
within the framework of a developement cooperation.

The Result
Periotheus contributed to the successful restructuring and optimisation of the production
data management system at VERBUND AG.
As a result of the development cooperation between VERBUND and VisoTech, a new
function was added to the Periotheus Suite - power station management. Based on this
standardised solution VEBUND could cover all of the extensive requirements of the produc-
tion data management system, which succeeded in replacing several existing systems and
applications and integrating Periotheus into the existing system environment. Along with
this, VisoTech achieved the desired simplification of interfaces and data access, as well as
a significant reduction in maintenance requirements.
Due to the redesigned data flows and the increased usability of the software solution,
VERBUND managed to further optimise internal processes and workflows.
Using the Periotheus power station management, the system displayed the management
of production data from the power stations in a clear structure and in all their complexity
with their wide range of influencing factors. The joint specification of the power station
management, as well as the subsequent gradual implementation and integration, was
successfully carried out within the planned time frame and in compliance with the planned
costs.
