Virginia Lao has successfully completed an 80hr+ internship over 14 weeks with the
Marketing Department at Volunteering Queensland during October 2014 -
January 2015.
Volunteering Queensland Inc is the state peak body for volunteering in Queensland, Australia.
The organisation has 20 paid staff and 100 volunteer staff and refers over 10,000 potential
volunteers to over 1,500 nonprofit organisations a year. The organisation also provides
education and training workshops, hosts a number of exciting events, innovative projects and
undertakes volunteering research.
Within her role she has undertaken the following:
- EVENTS MANAGEMENT: Helped with our Annual General Meeting including
managing guest list, preparing name tags, run sheets, organising speaker
presentations, materials for event set-up, managing registration desk, attendee
support and pack down.
- EVENTS PROPOSALS: Developed events proposal for a full week of activities to
celebrate volunteers during National Volunteer Week, to be held 11-17 May 2015, this
included key launch event the state-wide Volunteer Awards with regional and
metropolitan ceremonies.
- MARKETING BRAINSTORMING: Researched, collected data online and provided
new ideas. Proposed many creative ideas to encourage young people to be involved
in National Youth Week and volunteering. Contributed to brainstorming for new social
media approaches and organisation strategy, as well as ideas for National Student
Volunteer Week.
- WEBSITE: Crafted well-written content for news blogs for the Volunteering
Queensland website. Used Joomla content management system to post blogs, event
listings and update website content. Blogs included Brisbane City Council Grants.
Event listings included Volunteer Manager Network Meetings. Created Volunteering
Facts webpage.
- SOCIAL MEDIA: Developed many social media messages for Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram. Used Hootsuite as a platform to schedule social media postings. Posts
covered promoting different volunteer projects listed on Linkki (environmental work,
arts, animal support, tutoring, Christmas opportunities) and the International
Volunteer Managers Day #IVMDay14 social media campaign.
- GRAPHIC DESIGN: Learnt Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and InDesign). Used
Photoshop to crop, resize and edit photos, to create website banners and buttons,
prepare images ready for website upload. Used InDesign to design posters and a
series of volunteering resources sheets that fitted in well with branding and style.
- VIDEO PRODUCTION: Used DSLR camera to film interviews at the Futuring
Community Engagement Workshop. Used Adobe Premiere to edit film footage for
Innovate Symposium 2015.
- CREATIVE COMMONS: Learnt about sourcing creative commons content online.
This included using the Noun Project to source icons, and Flickr to source photos.
- ADMINISTRATION/CLERICAL DUTIES: Provided various administration support as
required including preparing a project process chart for Virtually Done.

Virginia is a friendly and hardworking person. She approaches her work with great
enthusiastic and is excellent at brainstorming creative ideas for events and marketing. She
possesses the ability to work well independently and in a team to produce work that exceeds
