Poshan Abhiyaan is a programme started by Indian government to eradicate malnutrition. It is started in 2018 on 8th of March on the occasion of International Womens Day.

3. INTRODUCTION
Poshan Abhiyaan is a multi ministrial convergence mission
with the vision to ensure attainment of malnutrition free India
by 2022.
It was launched by Prime Minister on the occasion of
International Women’s Day on 8 March 2018.
September month to be celebrated as ‘Rashtriya Poshan
Maah’.

4. DEFINITION
A programme to improve the nutritional status for
children,pregnant & lactating mothers.
Purpose of celebrating ‘Poshan Maah’’ is to take
message of nutrition to every nook and corner of
India and to focus on complementary food.
The ministry of women and child development was
implementing it in 315 districts in first year.

5. AIMS
TO IMPROVE NUTRITIONAL OUTCOMES FOR
CHILDREN ,PREGNANT WOMEN AND LACTATING
MOTHERS.

6. Objective and Target
OBJECTIVES
• Prevent and reduce stunting in
children (0-6years)
• Prevent and reduce under –
nutrition ( under weight prevalence)
in children ( 0-6years)
• Reduce the prevalence of anemia
among young children ( 6- 59
months )
• Reduce the prevalence of anemia
among women and adolescent girls
in the age group of 15-49 years
• Reduce low birth weight (LBW)

7. Nutritional Issues in India
India is simultaneously battling several nutrition issues
under nutrition on the one hand rising prevalence of
overweight and obesity on the other.
India is home to 31% of all stunted children and half of all
wasted children across the globe.
India’s under-five wasting prevalence of 20.8% is also
greater then the developing country average of 8.9%.
As of 2015, the national prevalence of under-five
overweight is 2.4%.

8. Features
The proposal consists of :-
 Mapping of various schemes contribution toward addressing
malnutrition.
 Introducing a very robust convergence mechanism.
 ICT based real time monitoring system.
 Incentivizing states /UTS for meeting the targets.
 Incentivizing Anganwadi workers (AWWs) for using IT based tools.
 Eliminating registers used by AWWs.
 Introducing measurement of height of children at the Anganwadi centre
(AWWs)

9. Major impact
The targets will strive to reduce the level of stunting ,under nutrition
anemia and low birth weight babies.
It will create synergy, ensure better monitoring , issue alerts for
timely action.
Encourage status /UTs to perform ,guide and supervise the line
Ministries.
The national nutritional scheme targets to reduce stunting,under
anemia (among young children women and adolescent girls) and
reduce low birth weight by 2%, 2%, 3% & 2% per annum
respectively.

12. Implementation Strategy
It is based on intense monitoring and convergence
action plan right up to the grass root level.
POSHAN Abhiyaan will be rolled out in three phases
from 2017-18 to 2019-20.
Mission would strive to achieve reduction in stunting
from 38.4%(NFHS-4) to 25% by 2022 (mission 25 by
2022)
