Definition: Tooth, portion of a tooth or that
portionof an implant used for support of a fixed
or removable prosthesis – GPT

It has to withstand both the forces acting on it

11. RETAINER
Definition: Component of an FPD which takes
support from the abutment tooth and provides
retention to the prosthesis – GPT

Definition: An artificial tooth on a fixed dental
prosthesis that replaces a missing natural tooth,
restores its function, and usually fills the space
previously occupied by the clinical crown – GPT
