History of fashion
3. Trickle Down Theory :The oldest theory of distribution is
the trickle-down theory described by Veblen in 1899.In this
model, a style is first offered and adopted by people at the
top strata of society and gradually becomes accepted by
those lower in the strata (Veblen; Simmel; Laver). Fashion
is considered a vehicle of conspicuous consumption and
upward mobility for those seeking to copy styles of dress.
Once the fashion is adopted by those below, the affluent
reject that look for another.
The trickle-up or bubble-up Theory :In this theory the
innovation is initiated from the street, so to speak, and
adopted from lower income groups. The innovation
eventually flows to upper-income groups; thus the
movement is from the bottom up. Mass Production and
Democratization of Clothing To provide clothing at
moderate cost for all citizens took two primary
developments, mass production and mass distribution
(Kidwell and Chrisman 1974). Mass production required
developing the technology for middle-quality clothing that
could be made available for the majority

learn at Dezyne E’cole through the art of pattern making.

16. GARMENT CONSTUCTION
Garment construction is popularly called Pattern
Engineering has a great importance in fashion industry.
Within the share of technology industries, design technology
is perhaps the fastest growing today.
In garment industry typically employs one of two methods to
create a pattern
The flat pattern method : where the entire pattern is
draped on a flat surface from measurements.
The draping method : Involves creating a muslin mock
- up pattern by pinning fabric directly on a form.
19. Broadcloth / Poplin Fabric : Broadcloth is made from interweaving threads
(simple over/under weave pattern).. Broadcloth/ Poplin is used for the classic
dress shirt – with a smoother texture and being lightweight.
Twill Fabric : Twill is created using a diagonal weave called a “wale”.
The diagonal weave makes twill wrinkle less and easier to iron. It is good
if you like softer but heavier fabric and is suitable for formal
occasions.
Oxford Fabric : Oxford is considered more casual since it is the coarsest
and is created using the basket weave. However, it still remains quite soft
and comfortable to wear when used for a dress shirt.
