1. Bengaluru: Jayanagar MLAB.N. Vijay
Kumar who is all in praises by his
constituency residents is unhappy. The
MLA has used part of his MLALADS
for constructing circulation pits but
the garbage clog in the pits has created
another complication.
"Bengaluru is not a planned city and
Jayanagar is a 50-year-old layout.
Garbage is the main issue in the city.
Circulation pits have been constructed
in 360 places in Jayanagar to eliminate
water clogging. This separates the dry
waste from wet waste and is recycled
to produce power and manure.
Dustbins are put up in every lane but
people do not make use of it. Garbage
is thrown beside the dustbin and gets
piled up on the roads. The plastic
collected on roads is washed into the
circulation pits and water clearance
is totally jammed. It requires a lot of
time and manpower to clear the pits",
said Mr. Vijay Kumar.
Vijay Kumar implemented the
circulation pits programme three years
back to make Jayanagar garbage-free.
Apart from the roads, circulation pits
are installed in Vijaya college, BES
college, NMKRV college, and public
parks.
“We need to act responsible and use
the provided facilities like dustbins
and bicycle lanes to make the city
garbage free and pollution free", said
Ahalya, student of BES College.
The BJP candidate bridges the gap
between citizens and him by setting up
a grievance cell in Jayanagar 4th “T”
block. “I do not want my constituency
members to approach me after five
years and complain. The office is open
every day and people can approach
me between 10am – 12pm”, said Mr.
Vijay Kumar.

Bengaluru: The BTM team of Aam
Aadmi Party conducted a campaign
at the BTM Water Tank bus stop
on November 22, 2014, as a protest
against the high bus fares of the BMTC
(Bangalore Metropolitan Transport
Corporation).
The city is said to have one of the
highest bus fares in the country.
This essentially leads to the question
of how relevant AAP is in today’s
scenario, especially in light of their
waning popularity following Arvind
Kejriwal’s resignation earlier this year
after only 49 days in power.
7 out of 10 people in BTM stated that
AAP has lost its initial appeal. “The
situation is not the same anymore.
People are satisfied with the present
Central Government, which wasn’t
the case during the ten year tenure
of the Congress. Taking this into
consideration, AAP will most likely
fade off” said Priyadarshan, an
engineer at Safran.
“The party is no longer relevant and
going out onto the streets to fight
corruption is just not feasible,” said
Mr. Rajneesh, a political analyst.
“The Aam Aadmi Party hasn’t been
able to take off, and functions only to
garner media publicity. They ensure
the media covers everything they
do. They try to publicize all their
programmes”, said a BJP member.
However Mr. Kartikey Khanna,
Assembly Coordinator of the BTM
Assembly, had much to say. “How
much of our campaigns do you see in
the media? AAP has seen an influx of
IT professionals or ‘techies’ from the
city as they are exposed to information
and also to the western political
system. They want to see change in
the current system and AAP stands
for this change. AAP’s strength is the
commitment of volunteers, and this
hasn't changed in 2 years. Mrs Nina
Nayak might have lost the elections
but she still continues to work and
support the party.”

Bengaluru: The laying of a 4km-long
road connecting Bannerghatta and
Kagalipura that could serve to ease
the traffic between the two areas has
been stalled as the forest department
opposed it. Much of the road is a dirt
track and motorists go to Gottikere to
take Nice Road – a detour that adds
half an hour to commute time.
The road right now, can take only two
wheelers and families have trouble
commuting. “We have approached the
panchayat several times and there is
no response from them" said Prabhu, a
resident of Bannerghatta road.
The panchayat president of Bannerghatta,
Rahman Shariff, had more to say.
"The path is part of forest land and
Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP)
officials have filed an objection in
the court against the road project.
Any road built could cause trouble
for animals living in the forest. The
public are in danger since animals
could come out and attack them.” Last
month, a cheetah attacked a motorist
who was injured in his spine and had
to be hospitalized, adds Shariff.
The PWD department says it has all
project documents ready and they
will go ahead with the construction.
“The relevant documents have been
submitted several times to forest
department and to the court. The forest
department seems amenable now but
has asked us to wait for the approval.
If the public too approach the court,
things will move at a faster pace,” said
Venkatraj, a senior engineer at PWD.

Bengaluru: Officials of the Karnataka
Power Corporation Limited (KPCL)
and Karnataka Power Transmission
Corporation Limited (KPTCL) said
that the state would not be affected
by the recent Coal India Ltd. workers’
union strike, allaying the worries of
many.
Coal India Ltd's employees declared
a five-day strike, the biggest in its
history. It was estimated to cause
a loss of almost Rs.1500 Cr each
day. Karnataka generates power
majorly from the Baldari, Raichur
and Singareni coalmines, which is
presently on strike. “The coal is usually
stocked to sustain power requirements
for 5-10 days in emergency” said
KPCL & KPTCL officials.
"IfthestrikeofCoalIndiaistocontinue
then the entire state will suffer due to
power cuts. In that case we will have
to buy from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu
or Punjab” said Narasappa, Assistant
General Manager of Corporate
Communication, KPCL.
KPTCL generates a capacity of
13260.40 MW, whereas KPCL
generates 6499 MW. "During
emergency we generate power from
alternative sources like Hydel or wind
but as the summer season is coming,
we have to put a limit on power
generation. In future Karnataka will
generate natural gas power. The Birdi
Gas power project is under process.
It will, hopefully, lessen the power
deficiency" said an official, KPTCL.
