SINGAPORE SPORTS HUB PROJECT

1) The project
Set to become the pre-eminent sports and leisure venue in the South Asia region, the
Singapore Sports Hub offers world-class facilities for sports, events, concerts, exhibitions and
international trade shows.
Dragages Singapore undertook design and construction work for the complex. Central to the
Sports Hub is the 55,000-seat new National Stadium, which features a retractable roof measuring
300 m in diameter.
Other Hub facilities includes: a 6,000-seat indoor aquatic centre and a water sports centre for
the general public; a 3,000-seat multifunction arena that will be fully scalable; an exhibition centre; a
sports museum; office space for sporting associations; 41,000 m² of commercial space.
2) What I was involved in
As a graduate civil engineer, my graduation thesis was the stadium bowl’s cooling system
design and testing.

Then, I was involved in site management for one quarter of stadium. This included:
- Planning and management of site activities:
o Sewage and drainage subcontractor tendering,
o Interviews,
o Award and contract follow up;
o Subcontractors claims and litigations

- Design amendments submissions with the consulting team;
o Due to miss conformance of site works,
o To coordinate the latest amendments requested by other services, such as MEP et
architectural request,
o To accommodate other contract conditions;
- Particularly in charge of the structural supports of the roof, which included:
o 2m diameter bored piles,
o Disconnected slab at ground level to enable services to pass on a circular road,
o 2m to 2.20m diameter columns, ~12m high;
o A 1km long post-tensioned “ring beam”, 12m square section (post tensioning
subcontracted to VSL Singapore)
o Truss blocks reinforcing and casting
o Handover to the roof team at the junction of steel plate/concrete of truss blocks.
- Other structural works follow up:
o Precast slabs,
o Cast-in-situ slabs, beams and columns.
The ring beam with 50% completion of truss blocks.
Last pour of the ring beam (6m wide)
