3. Redox
Redox is a type of chemical reaction in which the oxidation
states of atoms are changed. Redox reactions are
characterized by the actual or formal transfer of electrons
between chemical species, most often with one species
undergoing oxidation while another species undergoes
reduction
4. Oxidation (leo)
• Loss of elecrtons
• Loss of Hydrogen
• Gain of oxygen
• Increase of oxidation number
5. Reduction (Geo)
• Gain of electron
• Gain of Hydrogen
• Loss of oxygen
• Decrease of oxidation number
6. Oxidising & Reducing
agent
Oxidizing agent
An oxidizing agent is a reactant that removes electrons
from other reactants during a redox reaction.
Reducing agent
reducing agent is an element or compound that loses
an electron in a redox reaction
7. Redox indicators
Redox Indicators are
an indicators that
undergoes a definite color
change at a specific
electrode potential,and
shows a reversible color
change between oxidized
and reduced forms
8. Types of indicators
• Self indicators – Self indicator is actually a chemical
substance which can mark the end point of a titration
or any other reaction along with self-participation in
the reaction
example- Potassium permanganate
• Internal indicators - indicators are those in which
one of the reactants acts as an indicator
example- Ferroin sulphate
9. • External indicators- External indicator is added in
between the titration process by taking a drop of
titrated mixture
example- Potassium hexacyno ferrate
