MALE STERLITY IN CROP PLANTS

MALE STERLITY:
It is the faliure of plant to produe functional Anthers,pollen
,or male gametes
Mainly occurs in bisexual flowers
Sterile males are rare because they eliminated by natural
selection
TYPES OF MALE STERLITY:
1. GENETIC MALE STERLITY:
Genetic male sterlity is
rare beacuse it is controlled by ressesive allele
Genetic male saterlity is reported in various plants :chilli
,pipper ,pea ,brinjil ,etc
Mutation in nuclear genome sometimes also cause
male sterlity
2. NON –GENETIC MALE STERLITY:
• Structural barrers,Absence of enzyme that digest
cells of style ,Absence of proper maturation
• Enviornmental factors like Temprature ,Photoperoid
also responsible for male sterlity
• Sterlity due to enviornmental factors reported in
various Herbaceous and vegetable plants
1. PHENOTYPIC MALE STERLITY
- Formation of non functional pollen.
--Pollen remain trapped in anther release after pollination
time passes.
2.CYTOPLASMIC MALE STERLITY
Occurs due to mutation
in mitochondrial DNA.
3.GENETIC MALE STERLITY:
-Controlled by
ressesive allele
-Also occurs due to mutation in nuclear DNA
4.CYTOPLASMIC GENETIC MALE STELITY (CGMS)
• Occurs due to transformation of sterile gene in
nucleoplasm.
5.TRANSGENIC MALE STERLITY(TMS)
Occurs due to non-
proper transfer of gene in recombinanat dna tecnology
6.CHEMICAL INDUCED MALE STERLITY(CIMS)
The chemicals such as Maleic hydrazide, Gibberellins,
Dalapon, Mendok, Ethephon etc. disrupts the normal
pollen development inducing male sterility without
affecting female functionality are known as male
gametocides or chemical hybridizing agents.
7.ENVORNMENTAL MALE STERLITY
• Environmental factors also influence cytoplasmic-
genetic male sterility. ... The potent environmental
factors are temperature, photoperiod, light
intensity, and soil factors such as soil micronutrients
and soil pH. Temperature and photoperiod are the
major ones
USES OF MALE STERLITY
Male sterile plant uses for hybrid seed seed production
-male sterile plant directly uses as a female plant
Emasculation not require
Use of male sterile plant save Time ,Labour ,and Money

MALE STERLITY: It is the faliure of plant to produe functional Anthers,pollen ,or male gametes Mainly occurs in bisexual flowers Sterile males are rare because they eliminated by natural selection TYPES OF MALE STERLITY: 1. GENETIC MALE STERLITY: Genetic male sterlity is rare beacuse it is controlled by ressesive allele Genetic male saterlity is reported in various plants :chilli ,pipper ,pea ,brinjil ,etc Mutation in nuclear genome sometimes also cause male sterlity

NON –GENETIC MALE STERLITY: • Structural barrers,Absence of enzyme that digest cells of style ,Absence of proper maturation • Enviornmental factors like Temprature ,Photoperoid also responsible for male sterlity • Sterlity due to enviornmental factors reported in various Herbaceous and vegetable plants

PHENOTYPIC MALE STERLITY - Formation of non functional pollen. --Pollen remain trapped in anther release after pollination time passes. 2.CYTOPLASMIC MALE STERLITY Occurs due to mutation in mitochondrial DNA. 3.GENETIC MALE STERLITY: -Controlled by ressesive allele -Also occurs due to mutation in nuclear DNA
  • 5. 4.CYTOPLASMIC GENETIC MALE STELITY (CGMS) • Occurs due to transformation of sterile gene in nucleoplasm. 5.TRANSGENIC MALE STERLITY(TMS) Occurs due to non- proper transfer of gene in recombinanat dna tecnology 6.CHEMICAL INDUCED MALE STERLITY(CIMS) The chemicals such as Maleic hydrazide, Gibberellins, Dalapon, Mendok, Ethephon etc. disrupts the normal pollen development inducing male sterility without affecting female functionality are known as male gametocides or chemical hybridizing agents.
