8. Problem: Massive Waste
1. The number of shoes each person throws
away per year: 2.75 pairs
2. Number of shoes made for each person per
year: 2.88 pairs
3. The total footwear waste generated globally,
each year: 22 billion pairs
Waste has large impact on the environment
Therefore, when we design a pair of shoes,
we want to minimize the waste to be
generated in the end of life.
Massive
Waste
Problema: rifiuti enormi
9. Problem: Cost of Recycling
Massive
Waste
Hard to
Recycle
less than 5% of end-of-life shoes are being recycled, with most being disposed of in landfill sites around
the globe. One of the primary reasons is that most modern footwear products contain a complex
mixture of leather, rubber, textile, polymers and metallic materials, that makes it difficult to perform
complete separation and reclamation of material streams in an economically sustainable manner.
Recycling of shoes is challenging due to the complex mixture of materials and construction
technologies.

In one word, Cost is High!! Therefore, bring sustainability into the start of life through
consumer choices and product design and development may significantly reduce
the necessity and the cost of recycling by the end of life.
Problema: costo del riciclaggio
10. Problem: Information Silo’ed
• Digitalization has happened for sustainability in
small pockets, not on end-to-end level
• Supply chain has a lack of transparency
• Localization battles over globalization

13. Values of Connected Data
Change the reality that heavily relies on the use of
materials such as leather, rubber, and synthetic
fibers.
Allow access to comprehensive databases that
detail the environmental impact of these materials.
Make informed decisions and select more
sustainable alternatives, reducing our carbon
footprint and minimizing waste.

14. Values of Connected Data
Connected data enables real-
time tracking and monitoring of
every stage of the supply chain,
from sourcing to production,
distribution, and even end-of-life
management.
This transparency allows us to
identify inefficiencies, monitor
compliance with sustainability
standards, and ensure ethical
sourcing of materials.

15. Values of Connected Data
Connected data can also enable direct
engagement with consumers, fostering a
sense of shared responsibility and
encouraging sustainable behaviors.
By providing transparent information about the
environmental impact of our products, we
empower consumers to make informed
choices.
Furthermore, data on consumer preferences
and behavior can help us tailor our offerings to
align with sustainability goals and drive
demand for eco-friendly footwear.

26. Key Takeaways
• Sustainable materials can be identified, sourced globally, and incorporated into
footwear design and development
• Consumer involvement eases decision making.
• Integration and Connectivity: Platform should reach anyone and anywhere in the
world for sustainable materials
• A material usage dashboard helps, A LOT!
• It offers timely and comprehensive analysis of material data across various
dimensions of the enterprise's product development process, provides clarity
regarding material usage, which aids in the reduction or elimination of non-
sustainable materials, while ensuring transparency in development costs.
