4. TIME TO GET STARTED!!!!
Do you feel irritation in eyes when you get stuck in a
traffic?
Do you know why the colour of Taj mahal has
changed ?
Have you ever heard about acid rain?
5.
6. WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?
Air pollution is contamination of air by
noxious gases and minute particles of
solid and liquid matter(particulates) in
concentration that have undesirable
effect on living being.
7. WHAT ARE POLLUTANTS??
Any visible or invisible particle or gas
that is not part of original or normal
composition are called POLLUTANTS.
A pollutant can be of natural origin
or man made.
The substance can be solid particles,
liquid droplets, or gases
8. TYPES OF AIR POLLUTANTS
PRIMARY POLLUTANTS
PRIMARY
POLLUTANTS
are those that are directly
released into the air from
the pollutant source.
EXAMPLES ARE:
SULPHUR DIOXIDE
CARBON MONOXIDE
SECONDARY POLLUTANTS
SECONDARY
POLLUTANTS are not
emitted directly. Rather,
they form in the air when
primary pollutants react or
interact.
EXAMPLES ARE:
PAN
SMOG
16. SULPHUR DIOXIDE
•Produced when coal and fuel oil are
burned
•Present in power plant exhaust
•Narrows the airway, causing wheezing and
shortness of breath, especially in those with
asthma
17. NITROGEN DIOXIDE
Nitrogen dioxide, are expelled from high
Produced during thunderstorms by electric
discharge
Brown haze dome above or a plume downwind of
cities temperature combustion
Chemical formula NO2
This reddish-brown toxic gas has a characteristic
sharp, biting odour.
18. PARTICULATE MATTER
•Particles of different sizes and structures that are released into
the atmosphere
•Present in many sources including fossil fuels, dust, smoke, fog,
etc.
•Can build up in respiratory system
•Aggravates heart and lung disease; increases risk of respiratory
infection
19. GROUND LEVEL OZONE
•At upper level, ozone shields Earth from
sun’s harmful UV rays
•At ground level, ozone is harmful pollutants
•Formed from car, power and chemical plant exhaust
•Irritate respiratory system and asthma; reduces lung
function by inflaming and damaging lining of lungs
20. lead
•Lead is an elemental heavy metal found
naturally in environment.
•Sources of lead emission are motor vehicles and
industrial sources.
•It adversely affect the nervous system, kidney
function and immune system.
21.
22. WAYS TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION
• Tell your friends and family about pollution
• Make sure your parents get pollution checks on their
cars
• Travel in school bus
• Encourage your parents to carpool to work
• Switch off lights, fans, heat when not in use
