Sizing chemicals
AKD Sizing agents (Alkylketene dimer)
- Synthesized from C16/C18 fatty acids
- 100% of carbon is biobased
Rosin (Resin acids from wood)
a) Tall-oil rosin (distilled resin acids from tall-oil)
b) Gum rosin (extracted from wood sources)
- Bio-based main molecule, but side chains can be fossil-based
Both used as emulsions in P&P applications

7. Biobased Chemicals – Innovation examples
Maleated Sunflower Oil – FennoSize MO (”Sunflower ASA”)
- Can be used like conventional sizing chemical ASA
(alcenyl succinic anhydride)
- Vegetable oil based novel sizing agent (olefin replaced)
- Only maleic anhydride moiety currently fossil-based
- REACH reg. √; FDA compliant √ ; BfR / GB-9685 – Ongoing
