Every year in North America almost 12 million automobiles are scrapped and disposed of in landfills or junkyards. As new cars continue to be manufactured and sold, the disposal of old vehicles represents a growing issue and environmental threat. Fortunately, 75 percent of an end-of-life vehicle (ELV) can be recycled.
3. Automotive Shredder Residue
• Automobile recyclers are
generally able to recover up
to 85 percent of a vehicle’s
total materials just by
collecting the residual
ferrous and non-ferrous
metals that are left behind
after shredding.
• The remaining materials – a
mixture of plastics, wood,
fabric and glass – are known
as automotive shredder
residue (ASR) or auto fluff.
4. Recovery of ASR
• Each year the U.S. alone
generates about five
million tons of ASR.
• While most auto
shredder residue is
tossed into landfills, up
to 60 percent can
actually be recovered as
valuable and reusable
metals.
5. Tuffman and Eriez
• The Tuffman®-Eriez® Metal Separation System is designed to
separate and recover ferrous and non-ferrous metals from
automotive shredder residue. Through the use of a Tuffman®
Trommel Screen, the larger pieces in the ASR are separated out,
and the smaller fines travel via an incline conveyor to a drum
magnet and an Eriez® Eddy Current Separator.
• The drum magnet removes ferrous metals from the stream, and
the self-cleaning separator uses a patented heavy-duty
Kevlar/ceramic surface rotor shell and high-frequency eddy
fields for optimum separation of materials.
6. Tuffman and Eriez
• The remaining material
travels up another
Tuffman® Inclince
Conveyor to an Eriez®
ProSort II Metal Recovery
System.
• The ProSort II requires 75
percent less energy than an
air-driven sorter and has a
low operating cost, as well
as sensor-activated paddles
that deflect detected
materials.
7. The Tuffman ®-Eriez® Metal Separation System allows
operators to efficiently recover valuable materials and precious
metals from ASR or e-waste.

8. Vulcan® Systems
• Equipment is also available to dry auto shredder residue
from our Vulcan® Systems.
• Vulcan® can supply a full range of equipment to dry, sort
and move ASR, including custom-designed and
manufactured dryers.
9. Benefits
• Recovering and
recycling metals from
automotive shredder
residue not only benefits
the environment but also
helps operators to obtain
more value from their
material.
