Archaeologists study past human cultures by analyzing artifacts and other evidence left behind. They excavate sites to uncover artifacts, features, and structures. Archaeologists then classify, date, and interpret their findings to learn about past ways of life. This involves researching the archaeological evidence, identifying artifacts, and placing interpretations within broader historical and cultural contexts. The overall goal is to piece together puzzles about past societies from clues in the archaeological record.
Theme: Our past is like a puzzle that has no box and is missing most of its pieces. Archaeology helps us see the picture
Intro: Imagine you are working on a 10,000 piece puzzle but you don’t have the lid with the picture on it and most of the pieces are missing. Could you figure out what that picture was?
Our past is like this puzzle, only much bigger and way more complicated. If we are going to have a hope of understanding any part of it, we need the help of a system called the archaeological process. Today I’m going to talk to you about archaeology and how we use it to try and see the whole picture of the past.
Who thinks archaeologists (study dinosaurs, rocks, look for treasure)?
“Archaeologists study people in the past based on the things they left behind.”
we study their garbage

An artifact is anything that people have used.
Big things
Lots of little things
If we find a tree that fell in the woods 1,000 years ago and nobody touched it, is it an artifact?
If somebody took that tree and made a canoe, is it an artifact now?
Features are pieces of the puzzle that are a part of the ground.
Sometimes they are just a lot of artifacts
Other times they’re stains in the dirt.
Post holes
Construction trench
Now that you know what a feature is, what do you see in the picture of these cannons?

Why are we missing so many pieces to the puzzle?
What is left after these pants have been in the ground for 100 years
What else in this picture would last?
If this chicken is buried in the ground what will last?
What do you see in this shotgun house that will last after the house falls down?
Lots of options (nails, hinges, chimney bricks, chains, window glass)
Pilings as features

You can see that all of this is pretty complicated. Fortunately, we have the archaeological process to help us.
The first step is to figure out where the site is at.

After the site is recorded it is time to identify the artifacts.
Some of this happens in the field.
Most happens in the lab.

Where we assemble the puzzle.
We start with just a few pieces.
Then we fill in some missing pieces.
Eventually, we have a general idea of what the picture is.
But there are some things that we will never know.

What’s the point of all that work if we don’t tell anybody about it?
ALL archaeology requires a report.
We also present what we learn, talk to people about archaeology, and create museum exhibits.
How many of these steps happen outside?
- For every 1 hour outside, someone has to spend 7 hours inside

Here’s our picture again and here are the pieces we started with.
Imagine somebody walked by and took one of the few pieces you had.
Then it happened again, and again.
How much harder is it to figure out the picture when these pieces go missing?
This is the same for archaeological sites.
