Drivers of behaviors:
• Misperceptions: ‘breastmilk alone can’t
quench child’s thirst, water is needed’,
herbal teas ‘purify child’ and increase
appetite
• Lack of health worker support to
prepare for initiation and maintenance
of breastmilk supply for 6 months of EBF
• Mothers are not skilled in positioning,
attachment and manual expression of
milk, and how to address common
difficulties
Influential persons to support mothers
• Birth attendants/midwives can teach
mothers/family members the needed
skills and address common difficulties
through counseling
• Mothers in law, grandmothers
discourage mothers from giving water
and other liquids
• Religious leaders can encourage
breastfeeding according to the religious
scriptures
