Verb: to sympathise (reg)
Example: I can sympathise with all of you, quarantined in your
apartments.
Noun: sympathy
Example: Please show sympathy for them, they aren’t as lucky as you.
Adjective: sympathetic
Example: He isn’t very sympathetic, he keeps making fun of them.
To communicate
Verb: to communicate (reg)
Example: Tim communicated with the class using Google Slides :)
Noun: communication
Example: My teacher has excellent communication skills.
Adjective: communicative
Example: She’s a bit shy, and not very communicative,
she won’t tell us what’s wrong.
To bore
Verb: to bore (reg)
Example: This TV show bores me, nothing has exploded in 10 minutes!
Noun: boredom
Example: My level of boredom is very high at the moment.
Adjective: bored/boring
Example: He looks very bored right now.
My Semana Santa is quite boring.
To embarrass
Verb: to embarrass (reg)
Example: Stop embarrassing me!
Noun: embarrassment
Example: The king stole money? What an embarrassment!
Adjective: embarrassing
Example: My mother is so embarrassing, she always wears
clothes from the 1980s.
To argue
Verb: to argue (reg)
Example: I have argued with my girlfriend a lot during the quarantine.
Noun: argument
Example: My brother and sister had an argument yesterday.
Adjective: argumentative
Example: My grandparents are so argumentative. They
always have to voice their opinion.
To marry
Verb: to marry (reg) / to get married (irregular phrasal verb)
Example: She will marry Steven on the weekend.
She will get married to Steven on the weekend.
Noun: marriage
Example: My parents have a terrible marriage, they might get divorced.
Adjective: married
Example: Michelle is not married, she is single.
Exercise Time
You are going to write 6 sentences using the new vocabulary. I will list which form
(noun, verb or adjective) you will use. I am going to correct these myself so make
them interesting! I also want a mixture of present simple, past simple, present
perfect (etc).
Use the following word forms;
Marriage / Sympathise / Communication / Bored / Embarrassing / Argumentative
Don’t copy the examples! I wrote them myself so it will be very obvious!
Phrasal Verbs
● To look up to someone
● To hold back
● To hang out
● To make up
● To ask someone out
● To grow apart
● To put someone down
● To let someone down

● To stick up for
To look up to someone
Example: Phillip looked up to Ronaldo until he moved to Juventus
To hold back
Example: Hold your dog back, it looks dangerous!
Peter was held back for talking in class.
To hang out
Example: You can’t hang out with your friends until midnight!
To make up
Example: Sally and Jill made up after their big argument.
To ask someone out
Example: Fred asked Alicia out, but she said no because
he smells like cheese.
To grow apart
Example: The two best friends grew apart when they began
going to different high schools.
To put someone down
Example: Stop putting her down, she’s upset.
To let someone down
Example: David let his son down when he forgot to pick him
up from football practice.
To get on/ to get along
Example: Those two guys both like reading comic books,
they should get on.
To stick up for (someone)
Example: My husband is a bit annoying but at least he always
sticks up for me.
Exercise Time
You are going to do a listening quiz. There will be three possible answers, you
must listen to the audio, then write on a piece of paper A, B or C depending on
what you think. You can check the answers on the final slide, however you cannot
continue without listening to all my beautiful audios, so no cheating!!

Expressions
● To be at a loss for words
● Unable to stand somebody (or something)
● To despise somebody (or something)
● To give somebody a hard time
● To identify with somebody

● To be fed up (with someone or something)
● To break the ice
To be at a loss for words
Examples: The processions are cancelled! I am at a loss for words!
I was at a loss for words when Jenny said she was
pregnant.
Unable to stand somebody (or something)
Examples: I can’t stand Sophie, she never cleans the apartment!
I couldn’t stand my brother when he was younger.
To despise somebody (or something)
Examples: I despise politics. The politicians never solve problems.
I despised pop music during high school.
To give somebody a hard time
Examples: I give my students a hard time if they talk too much.
I used to give my mother a hard time when I was a
teenager.
To identify with somebody
Examples: I identify with Jessica, because we both have the same problem.
I have identified with lots of characters from books.
To not see eye to eye
Examples: I don’t see eye to eye with Jason, his opinions are crazy!
I haven’t seen eye to eye with any of my supervisors.
We argue constantly
To be fed up (with somebody or something)
Examples: I am fed up with this quarantine!
Are you fed up with Tim talking like I am?
To break the ice
Examples: Let’s play an ice breaking game.
Telling a joke is a good ice breaker.
Exercise Time
You are going to watch 5 short videos (one is an example). You must use one
expression you have just learnt to describe what is happening in the video. These
sentences will be sent to me for correction so make them good!! As you probably
don’t know the names of the characters in the videos, you will have to describe
them using clothes, hair colour (etc).

  • 4. To sympathise Verb: to sympathise (reg) Example: I can sympathise with all of you, quarantined in your apartments. Noun: sympathy Example: Please show sympathy for them, they aren’t as lucky as you. Adjective: sympathetic Example: He isn’t very sympathetic, he keeps making fun of them.
  • 5. To communicate Verb: to communicate (reg) Example: Tim communicated with the class using Google Slides :) Noun: communication Example: My teacher has excellent communication skills. Adjective: communicative Example: She’s a bit shy, and not very communicative, she won’t tell us what’s wrong.
  • 6. To bore Verb: to bore (reg) Example: This TV show bores me, nothing has exploded in 10 minutes! Noun: boredom Example: My level of boredom is very high at the moment. Adjective: bored/boring Example: He looks very bored right now. My Semana Santa is quite boring.
  • 7. To embarrass Verb: to embarrass (reg) Example: Stop embarrassing me! Noun: embarrassment Example: The king stole money? What an embarrassment! Adjective: embarrassing Example: My mother is so embarrassing, she always wears clothes from the 1980s.
  • 8. To argue Verb: to argue (reg) Example: I have argued with my girlfriend a lot during the quarantine. Noun: argument Example: My brother and sister had an argument yesterday. Adjective: argumentative Example: My grandparents are so argumentative. They always have to voice their opinion.
  • 9. To marry Verb: to marry (reg) / to get married (irregular phrasal verb) Example: She will marry Steven on the weekend. She will get married to Steven on the weekend. Noun: marriage Example: My parents have a terrible marriage, they might get divorced. Adjective: married Example: Michelle is not married, she is single.
  • 10. Exercise Time You are going to write 6 sentences using the new vocabulary. I will list which form (noun, verb or adjective) you will use. I am going to correct these myself so make them interesting! I also want a mixture of present simple, past simple, present perfect (etc). Use the following word forms; Marriage / Sympathise / Communication / Bored / Embarrassing / Argumentative Don’t copy the examples! I wrote them myself so it will be very obvious!

  • 13. To hold back Example: Hold your dog back, it looks dangerous! Peter was held back for talking in class.
  • 14. To hang out Example: You can’t hang out with your friends until midnight!
  • 15. To make up Example: Sally and Jill made up after their big argument.
  • 16. To ask someone out Example: Fred asked Alicia out, but she said no because he smells like cheese.
  • 17. To grow apart Example: The two best friends grew apart when they began going to different high schools.
  • 18. To put someone down Example: Stop putting her down, she’s upset.
  • 19. To let someone down Example: David let his son down when he forgot to pick him up from football practice.
  • 20. To get on/ to get along Example: Those two guys both like reading comic books, they should get on.
  • 21. To stick up for (someone) Example: My husband is a bit annoying but at least he always sticks up for me.
  • 22. Exercise Time You are going to do a listening quiz. There will be three possible answers, you must listen to the audio, then write on a piece of paper A, B or C depending on what you think. You can check the answers on the final slide, however you cannot continue without listening to all my beautiful audios, so no cheating!!

  • 32. To be at a loss for words Examples: The processions are cancelled! I am at a loss for words! I was at a loss for words when Jenny said she was pregnant.
  • 33. Unable to stand somebody (or something) Examples: I can’t stand Sophie, she never cleans the apartment! I couldn’t stand my brother when he was younger.
  • 34. To despise somebody (or something) Examples: I despise politics. The politicians never solve problems. I despised pop music during high school.
  • 35. To give somebody a hard time Examples: I give my students a hard time if they talk too much. I used to give my mother a hard time when I was a teenager.
  • 36. To identify with somebody Examples: I identify with Jessica, because we both have the same problem. I have identified with lots of characters from books.
  • 37. To not see eye to eye Examples: I don’t see eye to eye with Jason, his opinions are crazy! I haven’t seen eye to eye with any of my supervisors. We argue constantly
  • 38. To be fed up (with somebody or something) Examples: I am fed up with this quarantine! Are you fed up with Tim talking like I am?
  • 39. To break the ice Examples: Let’s play an ice breaking game. Telling a joke is a good ice breaker.
  • 40. Exercise Time You are going to watch 5 short videos (one is an example). You must use one expression you have just learnt to describe what is happening in the video. These sentences will be sent to me for correction so make them good!! As you probably don’t know the names of the characters in the videos, you will have to describe them using clothes, hair colour (etc).
