SPECIALTY DRILLING:
INJECTION WELL CONSTRUCTION
Layne is an industry leader in all facets of USEPA-regulated underground
injection control (UIC) well construction. Layne's design-build capabilities
streamline permitting and construction while delivering added value.
Combining its considerable engineering, permitting and drilling expertise, Layne constructs
UIC wells for clients nationwide. Water utilities, power companies and industries have
embraced injection technology as an environmentally safe and cost-effective disposal
solution for liquid wastes. UIC technology also holds potential for providing geothermal heat
to hospitals, universities and other institutions.
TURNKEY DRILLING SERVICE
Through Layne's comprehensive design-build process, clients benefit from a seamless
construction program that reduces costs and satisfies all regulatory requirements. Since
design and logistics are integral to permitting, the earlier Layne is engaged, the more value it
can deliver. Layne carries out every step of the planning and construction program,
including:
+ Engineering + Design + USEPA permitting + Consulting + Drilling
+ Well grouting + Well stimulation + Geophysical logging + Testing
UIC WELL CONSTRUCTION
From Florida to California, Layne is experienced in Class I through Class VI injection well
construction, including affiliated monitor wells (single, dual and/or triple zone), as well as
exploratory wells and aquifer storage and recovery wells. Layne teams work in lockstep with
the client and regulators to streamline the process.
GEOPHYSICAL LOGGING
Layne has elevated traditional borehole geophysical logging to a new level by combining
standard techniques with the latest technological advancements and creative thinking to
develop capabilities unmatched in the industry. Methods include acoustic, imaging, nuclear
and electric measurements.
MECHANICAL INTEGRITY TESTING, MAINTENANCE & REHABILITATION
Layne provides expert mechanical integrity testing services: packer, pressure test,
radioactive tracer surveys, temperature logging and downhole video surveys. Layne also
provides follow-up services as needed for optimal, long-term well operations.
SOLUTIONS FOR
+ Water & wastewater utilities + Power companies + Chemical producers + Mining

EXAMPLES OF OUR SUCCESS
CLASS I TEST INJECTION WELL – WATER TREATMENT PLANT
Texas, U.S.A
Layne drilled the first of five Class I industrial injection wells as part of a future reverse
osmosis treatment facility for the San Antonio Water System. Brackish raw water to
supply the new plant will come from eight production wells that Layne will also construct.
Brine resulting from the RO process will be discharged into the Class I wells. As with all
Class I drilling programs, test well activities included packer testing to determine the
underground source of drinking water and multiple core samples for confinement and
injection zone confirmation.
DEEP INJECTION WELL – IMPERIAL IRRIGATION DISTRICT
California, U.S.A.
The Imperial Irrigation District chose Layne and Class I injection wells (primary and
backup) as the solution to environmental concerns over the discharge of spent cooling-
tower water from its El Centro Generating Station. Completed to depths of approximately
2,740 feet, the wells were successfully tested at injection rates in excess of 1,000 gallons
per minute, well above the anticipated maximum of 850gpm. Layne's complete project
oversight, including classification of materials, daily reporting and final sealed
certification from an independent engineer to USEPA Region 9, resulted in a turnkey
program ready for plant piping.
GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATORY WELL – FORT BLISS HOSPITAL
Texas, U.S.A.
HDR Constructors, Inc., on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, hired Layne to
drill a geothermal exploratory well to investigate the feasibility of heating a new hospital
complex using an environmentally friendly alternative energy source. The geology onsite
varied drastically from that anticipated by the geothermal geology consultants. Layne
drilled using a blowoff preventer to control potential gas encounters and successfully
kept over 3,700 feet of 12.5-inch mudded borehole open and conditioned through
swelling clays and installed casing successfully on the first attempt.
DEEP INJECTION WELL – POLK POWER STATION
Florida, U.S.A.
After drilling a Class V exploratory well to obtain hydrologic and geologic information,
Layne completed the well to Class I industrial standards for the disposal of
nonhazardous gray wastewater and cooling tower blowdown water. The well was
originally designed to a depth of 5,800 feet, but Layne was asked to extend the drilling to
8,000 feet to obtain additional formation data. Layne completed the well with an 18-inch
seamless carbon steel casing and a 10.75-inch liner of fiberglass-reinforced tubing. To
meet Class VI standards for potential sequestration of carbon dioxide, the final casing
and liner were grouted with special CO2-resistant cement. Layne then drilled a second
Class I well at the site and two dual-zone monitor wells.
