A Costly Interruption: The Sermon On the Mount, pt. 2 - Blessed
Your faith has made you well
1. Your faithhas made you well…!– 15th
January 2017
Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And
the woman was healed at that moment.”(Matthew 9:22).
The firstrecordedinstance of Jesussaying,“Yourfaithhasmade you well” asstatedabove isfoundin
Matthew 9:22 where Jesushealsthe womanwiththe issue of blood. The KJV translatesJesus’wordsas
“Thy faithhathmade thee whole,”andthe NIV says,“Your faithhas healedyou.”The same incidentis
alsorecordedin Mark 5:34, where Jesussays, “Daughter, yourfaithhasmade you well;go in peace,
and be healedof your disease.” Inthe gospelswe canreadthat Jesusalsosays, “Yourfaith has made
you well.” Jesussaidthis tothe ten lepers thatwe can readfrom Luke 17:19 and a blindbeggarfrom
Luke 18:42. OthertimesJesuslinksfaithandhealingwithoutusing the exactwords, “Yourfaithhas
made you well,” suchas in Matthew 8:13, “Then Jesus saidto the centurion, “Go!Let it be done just as
you believedit would.” Andhis servant washealed at that moment.” and Matthew 15:28, “ThenJesus
saidto her, “Woman, youhavegreat faith!Your request is granted.” Andher daughterwas healed at
that moment.”
The healingthatthese people experiencedisexpressed,inGreek, byaform of the word sozo, which
means“topreserve,rescue,save from death,or keepalive.” Sometimes,sozo referstospiritual
salvation,whichisalsolinkedtoa person’s faith.Forexample,whenthe penitentprostitute washed
Jesus’feetwithhertears,He toldhermuch the same thing: Foundin Luke 7:50, “Jesussaidto the
woman, “Yourfaith has saved you; go in peace.”Some otherexamples,seeinMark10:52 andLuke
17:19. WhenJesusspoke of the faithof the womanwiththe issue of bloodin Matthew 9, Hishealing
was verylikelymore thanphysical;itwasa spiritual healingaswell, asshe istoldto “go inpeace”as we
readfrom Mark 5:34, “He saidto her, “Daughter, your faithhas healedyou. Goin peace and be freed
from your suffering.”
WhenJesussaidto certainpeople, “Yourfaithhasmade you well,” He wassayingthat theirfaith(their
confidence inHim) hadbeenthe meansof their healingand restoration. The powerof Christwaswhat
effectedthe cure,butHispowerwasappliedinconnectionwiththeirfaith.Justasthe faithof some
enabledthemtoreceive healing, sohealingwassometimes obstructed byalackof faith as we can see in
Matthew 13:58,“And he didnot do manymiracles there because of their lack offaith.” AsChristians
we alsoneedto knowthatin the same way, salvationcomestoa sinnerthroughfaith.Everyone whois
savedmustbelieve,butitisthe powerof Christthat saves,notthe powerof faith.Faithisonlythe
instrument,notthe poweritself.
We needtoknowthat the “value of one’sfaith”doesnotcome from simply expressingit, butfromthe
objectinwhichitrests.Evenas Christianswe come acrossmanywhoclaimabout their“faith”. We can
learnof a healingof ablindmannamedBartimaeusstatedin Mark 10 :47, “Whenhe heard that it was
Jesus ofNazareth, he beganto shout,“Jesus,Sonof David, have mercy onme!”. Bartimaeushadheard
of Jesusandhad faiththatJesus‘CAN’heal him. We learnfromMark 10:52, “Go,” saidJesus, “your
faithhas healedyou.” Immediatelyhe receivedhissightandfollowedJesusalongthe road.”We can
learnfromJesus’teachingas we findin Mark 11:22, “Have faithin God,” Jesusanswered.23 “TrulyI
tell you,if anyonesays to thismountain,‘Go,throw yourselfintothe sea,’and does notdoubt intheir
heart but believes that what they say will happen,it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you,
whatever you ask for inprayer, believe that you have received it, andit will be yours.”
2. Throughthe Gospelswe canrecognize thatJesusdidnotindiscriminatelyheal all the peopleall of the
time. We can learn inthe miracle of a disabledmanatthe pool of Bethesdaasstatedin John 5:1–11. We
can read that there were multitudesgatheredtobe healed, yetJesuschose onlyone mantoheal. This
presentsan interestingcase.Jesusaskedthe manif he wantedtobe made well…“WhenJesussaw him
lyingthere andlearned that he had been in this conditionfora long time,he askedhim, “Doyou want
to get well?” 7
“Sir,” theinvalidreplied,“Ihave no one to help me intothe pool when the water is
stirred. WhileI am tryingto get in,someone else goes downahead ofme.” (John5:6-7).
The disabledman’s answerwassteepedinsuperstition: He saidthatthere wasno one to carry himto
the pool, and he wasn’tfastenoughto getintothe waterat the righttime.Thisman washealedby
God’sgrace. On thisinstance hadno faithinJesus;he didn’tevenknow itwasJesuswhohadhealedhim
until lateras we read John5:8–13: Then Jesus saidto him, “Get up!Pick up your mat andwalk.” 9
At
once the man was cured; he picked up hismat and walked. The dayon which thistook place was a
Sabbath, 10
andso the Jewishleaders saidto the man whohad been healed,“It is the Sabbath;the law
forbidsyouto carry your mat.”11
Buthe replied,“The man who mademe well said to me, ‘Pickup your
mat andwalk. ”.
Anotherexampleof someonewhowashealedbefore faithisthe manbornblindin John9. He didnot
ask to be healed, butfrommanyothers,he waschosento be healed—anotherexample of God’sgrace.
In the case of the man born blindandinthe case of the manat the pool,Jesusdealtwiththeirphysical
problemsseparatelyfromdealingwiththeirspiritualneed—the maninJohn9 latercomesto a full
realizationof whoJesusisandexercisesfaithinHim.Jesus’healingof these menwasnotabouttheir
faithas much as itwas aboutHis will.We can learnthisfrom John9: 35-38, Jesus heard that they had
thrown himout, andwhen he foundhim,he said,“Do youbelieve in the Son ofMan?”36 “Whoishe,
sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I maybelieve in him.”37Jesus said,“Youhave now seen him;in
fact, he is the one speakingwith you.”38Then the man said,“Lord,I believe,” and he worshipedhim.”
Everyone whomJesuswilledtobe healedwashealed.SometimesHe healedthosewhoexpressedtheir
faithinHim,and He made a pointof emphasizingthe conditionof theirheart: “Yourfaithhas made you
well.” Othertimes,inHisgreatmercy,He healedthose whohadnofaithandlaterdrew themto
Himself.
