1. The Miracle of Healing– 17th
February2016
“…thatyoumay know and understandthat the Father is inme, and I in the Father.” (John10:38).
Whenever Jesus entered, into villages, or cities, people came and they laid the sick in the
streets, and besought him that they might touch his garment: and as many as touched him
were healed. The Gospel teaches us about many miracles that Jesus did during His ministry.
They have provided us plenty of miraculous evidence to believe in Jesus. But all of Jesus
miracles were not reported in the gospels. We can learn from John 20:30, “Jesus performed
many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book”. What
we read today was written, so that people will come to know and believe the truth written
through the personal experiences as reported by His disciples. “But these are written that you
may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life
in his name” (John 20:31).
When we read the miracles of Jesus, we can clearly understand that the miracles in the Bible
took place where people believed in Him and His Word. We can learn in Mark 6:5, “He could
not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them”. We can
learn of an incident where Jesus said that some whom He was visiting had no faith. “He was
amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village”(Mark
6:6). Jesus pointed out that the works He did should help produce faith. We can learn in John
10:38, “But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may
know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” He said even if you don’t
believe in me, they could experience firsthand and then believe the works: so that they may
know with certainty, and steadfastly believe, that He and the Father are one and the same.
As Christians our eyes should not mainly be on the miracles but on Him as the Lord and Saviour.
Jesus miracles were for people to know who He really was. Then and even now, most people
want only the result of the miracles forgetting the main underlying reason…The miracles were
for people to believe who He was and that by same develop faith in God. Jesus answered, “Very
truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because
you ate the loaves and had your fill: (John 6:26). When people came to him they were healed
but they did not consider the reason our Lord worked miracles, signs, wonders, and works. It
was to show His Identity…who he was and the power that He has and that He had the authority
even to forgive our sins:“But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to
forgive sins”(Mark 2:10).
Jesus healed many sicknesses proving His deity and through this people were amazed. They
began to follow Him and believe in him and eventually seek salvation, because sin being man’s
bigger problem. His healings were also to demonstrate that the Kingdom of God had come to
save humanity from eternal damnation, because of His Love for humanity. Jesus sometimes
worked miracles to stir up the people so that they would be forced to deal with His deity and
have faith in him. Among His people He wanted to inculcate their faith in Him. As Christians we
must know that our Faith in Jesus Christ plays a key role for anyone seeking a miracle. We can
2. learn from Matthew 15:28 “Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request
is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment”.
Jesus miracles were also to fulfill Prophecy. We can learn from Matthew 8:17,”This was to fulfill
what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:“He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases’.
There is a relationship between predictive prophecy and the Messiah. It was said that Jesus
made, the deaf would hear, the blind would see, and the lame would leap like a deer. But His
main objective was the salvation of mankind…that otherwise would be eternally damned. We
can read of an instance when Jesus came to Nazareth, and, as his custom was, he went into the
synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim
freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to
proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19).
Miracles are part of Christ’s saving work and are proofs of His deity. The miracles have salvation
written all over them. "Faith", "save", and "mercy" are words that appear in most of the
miracles. They were simply snapshots of a future glory that God has promised all of us. When a
miracle takes place the recipients has a brief glimpse into a future world ruled totally by God
where there is no sickness, death, or oppression by the evil one...and this is for eternity!
“…that you may know and understand that the Father is in me,
and I in the Father.” (John 10:38).
