    1. 1. Bible Study The Rev. Dr. Floyd H. Flake Wednesday, May 23, 2012 “BY FAITH”Hebrews 11:1-2(NLT) 1
    2. 2. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) “(1)Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.(2) Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation.” 2
    3. 3. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) In the Biblical calendar, the 7th Sunday after Easter is classified as PENTECOST. The reference to Pentecost comes from the Gospel of Luke, and reaches its fruition in the book of Acts; when the disciples are in one place together and on one accord as the Holy Spirit descends upon them. 3
    4. 4. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) The focal point for Christians is centered on: First - the acknowledgment of the resurrection of Jesus Christ; secondly - His ascension into Heaven, and thirdly - the fulfillment of the promise that He would send the Holy Spirit. The quickening of the Holy Spirit led them and leads us into an understanding of the faith that we share as a part of the Body of Christ. 4
    5. 5. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) Faith is an indelible characteristic that every Christian must have. Faith cannot be obliterated, or erased from the heart, mind, or soul of a true born again believer of JESUS CHRIST. HEBREWS 11 gives us various accounts of testimonies and triumphs of people who were victorious because of their faith in God. 5
    6. 6. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT)2. IT WAS BY FAITH THAT ABEL BROUGHT A MORE ACCEPTABLE OFFERING TO GOD THAN HIS BROTHER CAIN.3. IT WAS BY FAITH THAT NOAH BUILT THE ARK.4. IT WAS BY FAITH THAT ENOCH WAS TAKEN UP INTO THE HEAVENS WITHOUT DYING. 6
    7. 7. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) The relevant question that I have for you today is: Where is your faith? The faith life is not always easy. You will face many challenges, but your chances of overcoming them will be greater if you have faith in GOD. The author, Beth Jones, says it this way, “Faith enables you to face anything, overcome all things, and receive everything.” 7
    8. 8. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) It has been said that faith is like oxygen, it’s what you breathe! You believe God’s Word. You know that, “With God all things are possible.” With faith there is no room for negativity, hostility, or contradiction because my Bible tells me that, “faith the size of a mustard seed can move all mountains.” 8
    9. 9. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) When the supernatural favor of God blends with the faith of a believer, God releases His power to work on your behalf. Sometimes you can’t see what wonderful blessings God has given you - because you can’t see it, you don’t believe it. Your problem is that you are in spiritual darkness trying to see the end without faith. Faith is not found in your five physical senses. 9
    10. 10. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) Faith is not a feeling. Hebrews 11:6 says, “WITHOUT FAITH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE GOD, FOR HE WHO COMES TO GOD MUST BELIEVE THAT HE IS, AND THAT HE IS THE REWARDER OF THOSE WHO DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM.” Faith is simply taking God at His Word. As you grow in the Word, you grow in faith. 10
    11. 11. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) Romans 10:17 says, “FAITH COMES BY HEARING AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD.” (KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, “FOR WE WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT.” (KJV) Sometimes when you try to live the Christian life, you will have to fight the good fight of faith! In other words, some days you might feel like you are full of faith and sitting on the top of the world. 11
    12. 12. “By Faith” Hebrews 11:1-2 (NLT) At other times it will seem as if the whole world is against you. Sometimes you will feel like the Lord has blessed you beyond belief. At other times you may feel like He has not heard your prayers. Some days you may feel like you can conquer the world. But, there are also the days when you want to throw in the towel and quit. This is the time when you open up your heart and let the Holy Spirit guide you. 12
