God does not always heal people physically, even when they pray and have faith in healing. While God hears all prayers, whether He chooses to heal physically depends solely on His will. God's power is made perfect in weakness, and His blessings sometimes come in non-physical ways. If good health were always God's will, Christians would never get sick or die. Both righteous and sinful people experience illness. Even the apostle Paul had an ailment God did not heal. True faith and understanding is accepting God's sovereignty over healing rather than expecting it to always manifest physically.

But he saidto me, “Mygrace issufficientfor you,for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2
Corinthians12:9).
A personmaysincerelyprayandtrulyhave faiththat God can heal, butif it isnot God’swill toprovide
the healingatthat time, thennohealingwill come.ItisnotalwaysGod’swill to heal a personphysically.
As Christianswe canbe certainthat God hearsall our prayers, butthe decisiontocomplyisentirely
dependentonHiswill. “Thisisthe confidencewe have in approachingGod:thatif we ask anything
accordingto hiswill,he hears us.”(1John5:14). SometimesGod’sblessingscome inotherwaysbesides
physical healing.
If it were always God’swill forpeople tobe healed, theneveryonewouldbe healedeverytime he orshe
became ill.If goodhealthwere always God’swill,thenChristiansshouldneverdie.We can’tblame
someone’smaladyonalackof faith,forwe know,biblically,thatGodsometimesusesillnessto
accomplishHiswill.Also,it’snotjustwaywardbelieverswhogetsick.Paul himself hadaphysical
ailmentthatthe Lord declinedtoheal aswe can read from 2 Corinthians12:7–9, “…orbecause ofthese
surpassinglygreatrevelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becomingconceited,I wasgiven a
thorn inmy flesh, a messenger ofSatan,to torment me. 8
Three times I pleadedwith the Lord to take it
away fromme. 9
But he saidto me, “My grace is sufficientforyou, formy power ismade perfect in
weakness.” Therefore I will boastall the more gladlyaboutmy weaknesses, so that Christ’spower
may rest on me.”
Often,Christianshave anover-simplifiedideaof healing.Theythinkthat,if theyare sick,theyhave only
to ask God to heal themand, because Godlovesthem, He will heal themstraightaway.Healingisseen
as proof of a person’sfaithandof God’s love.Thisideapersistsinsome circlesinspite of the truththat
everymotherknows:aparentdoesnot give herchildeverythinghe asksfor everytime,nomatterhow
much she loveshim. Joni EarecksonTadastruggledwiththisissue foralongtime.Asshe recountsinher

Yet Joni isstill ina wheelchairtoday.Forty-fiveyearsafterthe accidentthatleftherparalyzed,Godhas

will be great cause for praise. But ifnot, He will use it,He will use anything and everythingthat stands
in the way of His fellowshipwithyou. So let Godmold you and make you, transform you from glory to
glory. That’s the deeperhealing.” Therefore throughfaithwe are able toprayand leave itwithGod to
decide whatneedstobe done…because thatunderstandingisnotavailedtous. Intoday’scontext

WhereverChristwent,He healedthe sick, becauseof kindnessonHispart but His healingswere always
a signfrom heavenof Christ’sauthorityasMessiah. We can learnthatmany Jewsat thattime didnot
2. believethatJesuswasthe messiah aswe can readfrom John7:31,“Still, many inthe crowd believedin
him. They said,“Whenthe Messiahcomes, will he perform more signsthanthis man?” Whenwe read
the miraclesof Jesuswe can understandthat Faithwas a key requirement. We canlearn of an incident
foundin Matthew 13:58, “Andhe did not domany miraclesthere because oftheir lack of faith.”Jesus
didnot heal all those whowere around.Foran example atthe pool of Bethsaida(John5),Jesushealed
only ONEpersonfroma huge multitude of people there(John5).We can alsonote that the apostles
were alsogiventhe specificpowertoheal the sick, andfor thirty-sevenyearstheywenteverywhere
healingthose whoheardtheirmessage.Again,theirmiracles,including healing,were confirmationof
the truth of the gospel the apostlesproclaimed.
The twelve apostlesdidnotheal everyone, either.Often, therewere Christiansleftunwellinspite of the
apostolicpower. We canread where Paul saysto Timothy, “Stopdrinkingonly water, and use a little
wine because ofyour stomachand your frequent illnesses.” (1Timothy5:23). We are not promoting
wine butincontextof thispresentationwe caninquire astowhy thendidn’tPaul justlayhandson
Timothyandheal him? Because itwas notGod’s will toheal Timothythatway. The healingministrywas
not foranyone’spersonal convenience;rather,itwas meantto be a signfromGod—tothe Jewsof the
OldCovenantprimarily—andfortheirunderstandingwhoJesuswasand the validityof the apostles’
message of salvation throughChrist.
We are not livinginthe apostolicdaystoday.Of course,Godcan anddoesheal todaywhenHe wantsto

doesGod want?DoesHe desire toheal the individual, ordoesHe have anotherplantoshow His glory

all sicknessanddeathwill be eradicated: “Hewill wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no

21:4). But until then,there isagreaterhealing…The cleansingof sinfulhearts,throughfaithinJesus
