How do should educators respond to the continual developments in generative AI and ChatGPT in education? What does this mean for assessment and future strategy? This presentation considers the impact that artificial intelligence stands to make on education and the type of assessments that can be produced. It also gives some ideas as to how to best address this.

4. To Think About…
• What can students do with
(generative) artificial
intelligence tools, such as
ChatGPT?
• When is it acceptable for
students to use these tools?
• How should the educational
community respond to the
use of AI?
13. • Not “intelligent” in the human sense
• Trained on large quantities of data
• Can mimic structures and patterns

“I worked with 3 other people on delivering a
presentation about a topic quite frankly we
couldn't care less about. One of us has the
ChatGPT 4 subscription, so together we just
prompted it to:
‘generate a presentation plan for [topic] in the
framework of [subject's name] for a [master's
class name]. Make sure to divide the presentation
in 4 parts and make each part evenly split’.”

“We went into the presentation, and all we did was
literally read the 4 academic statements that
ChatGPT generated. The professor and the audience
just followed through with the bullet points
generated, and we were very much praised for
how thoughtful the plan was, how deep and
relevant the content is, and how concise and time-
conscious we were.”
“We didn't learn a damn thing.”
16. What Can Students Use Generative AI To Produce?
Essays
Presentation Slides
Scripts
(Fake) Research Data
Creative Writing
Computer Programs
Reflections
Marketing Plans
and much more…
17. What Else Can Students Use Generative AI To Produce?
Revision Notes
Job Applications
Personalised Feedback
18. When Is ChatGPT More Limited?
Recent results
Using correct sources
Mathematics
But these limitations can be overcome…
26. FAIR AI Use in Assessment
Foundational
Can work
without AI and
can demonstrate
core skills
Appreciative
Able to evaluate
the quality of
information
produced
Illuminative
Uses AI to learn,
suggest ideas,
clarify, and
improve
Replaceable
Directs AI to
complete
assessments,
and can evaluate
the output
27. Ensure that AI support is
in place for everyone:
• Students
• Faculty
• Other staff
• Wider society
