FROM THE EDITOR:
AS A WOMAN, MY ANSWER IS TALK
As a woman, I can say that I do talk about my problems. The tiny
problems like how my hair isn’t cooperating with the rest of me, to
the bigger problems which need serious emotional support. Most
men do not realise how important it is to talk. Whether it is about
how they fixed the broken door handle in the bathroom or whether it
is about how they just don’t feel right. Good or bad, everyone
deserves to be heard.
During the interviews I conducted with a few members of MATES, it
became apparent to me that each person I spoke to was grateful that
they contacted MATES and made that first step in attending MATES
meetings. These interviews also helped me understand the
difficulties which people (not just men) face on a daily basis and how
it affects them and the people they are surrounded by.
The reason some people choose not to talk about their feelings and
emotions may be because they don’t feel safe in trusting others with
their information; because they don’t feel comfortable talking to
others about such personal matters or because they simply don’t
have anyone to talk to. This is where MATES comes in! Men have the
opportunity to say anything they want without fear of being judged
or being treated differently after they disclose their stories. As stated
by Sue Hull, ‘it is sometimes easier to speak openly with a stranger
than it is to confide in your closest family or friends.’ This could be
because when you talk to a stranger, they aren’t emotionally involved
and will be less likely to be judgemental of you.
When you or your family comes home from work, talk with one
another. Discuss your day, ask your family about theirs and have a
conversation. Talk to your friends. Because even if you’re not facing a
tough time, someone else might be. Hug them. Embrace life. Be
happy! If you do choose MATES, we won’t treat you any different.
Instead, we will allow you to get it all out and go back to your happy
self.
