Psalm 145: Standing in Awe of God
1.
2. Where do you look for awe? What is your
source of awe?
3. True worship is fueled by an awe of God
found in His greatness and goodness in the
gospel.
4. I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.
5. One generation shall commend your works
to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will
meditate.
6 They shall speak of the might of your
awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
6. They shall pour forth the fame of
your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
8 The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast
love.
9 The LORD is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has
made.
7. All your works shall give thanks to you,
O LORD,
and all your saints shall bless you!
11 They shall speak of the glory of your
kingdom
and tell of your power,
12 to make known to the children of man
your mighty deeds,
8. and the glorious splendor of your
kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all
generations.
[The LORD is faithful in all his words
and kind in all his works.]
9. The LORD upholds all who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due
season.
16 You open your hand;
you satisfy the desire of every living
thing.
10. The LORD is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear
him;
he also hears their cry and saves them.
The LORD preserves all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.
11. My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD,
and let all flesh bless his holy name
forever and ever (Psalm 145).
12. I. Awe is Found in God’s Unsearchable
Greatness 1-7
13. • We make light of Sin
• We make light of Christian Obligation
• Our worship will always fall short.
14. II. Awe is found in God’s Enduring Goodness
(vv. 4-9).
15. “It is the Biblical duty of every generation of
Christians to see to it that the next generation
hears about the mighty acts of God. God does
not drop a new Bible from heaven on every
generation. He intends that the older generation
will teach the newer generation to read and think
and trust and obey and rejoice. It’s true that God
16. draws near personally to every new generation of
believers, but he does so through the Biblical
truth that they learn from the preceding
generations” (John Piper, “One Generation shall
Praise Your Works to Another”).
17. For we ourselves were once foolish,
disobedient, led astray, slaves to various
passions and pleasures, passing our days in
malice and envy, hated by others and hating
one another. But when the goodness and
loving kindness of God our Savior appeared
18. He saved us, not because of works done by
us in righteousness, but according to his
own mercy, by the washing of regeneration
and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he
poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ
our Savior.
(Titus 3:3-6).
19. III. Awe is Found in God’s Great Kingship vv.
10-13
20. IV. Awe is found in God’s Satisfying Goodness
(vv. 14-20).
22. “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and
saves the crushed in spirit” (Ps. 34:18).
“But you, O LORD, are a shield about me,
my glory, and the lifter of my head” (Ps.
3:3).
23. • He provides help to the weak (vv. 14)
• He provides nourishment for the hungry
(vv. 15-16).
• He provides His ear (vv. 18-19)
• He provides protection (v. 20).
