Isaiah 40:25-31 The Greatness of God25 To whom then will you compare me,that I should be like him? says theHoly One.26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name,by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in powernot one is missing.27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel,―My way is hidden from the LORD,and my right is disregarded by myGod‖?28 Have you not known? Have you notheard? The LORD is the everlasting God,the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary;his understanding is unsearchable.29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might heincreases strength.30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted;31 but they who wait for the LORDshall renew their strength;they shall mount up with wings likeeagles;they shall run and not be weary;they shall walk and not faint.
Lamentations 3:22-33 Great Is YourFaithfulness22 The steadfast love of the LORDnever ceases;his mercies never come to an end;23 they are new every morning;great is your faithfulness.24 ―The LORD is my portion,‖ says mysoul,―therefore I will hope in him.‖25 The LORD is good to those whowait for him,to the soul who seeks him.26 It is good that one should waitquietlyfor the salvation of the LORD.27 It is good for a man that he bearthe yoke in his youth.28 Let him sit alone in silencewhen it is laid on him;29 let him put his mouth in the dust—there may yet be hope;30 let him give his cheek to the one whostrikes, and let him be filled with insults.31 For the Lord will notcast off forever,32 but, though he cause grief, he willhave compassionaccording to the abundance of hissteadfast love;33 for he does not afflict from his heartor grieve the children of me
1 Peter 2:11-20 Submission toAuthority11 Beloved, I urge you as sojournersand exiles to abstain from the passionsof the flesh, which wage war againstyour soul. 12 Keep your conduct amongthe Gentiles honorable, so that whenthey speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds andglorify God on the day of visitation.Submission to Authority13 Be subject for the Lords sake toevery human institution, whether it be tothe emperor as supreme, 14 or togovernors as sent by him to punishthose who do evil and to praise thosewho do good. 15 For this is the will ofGod, that by doing good you should putto silence the ignorance of foolishpeople.16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-upfor evil, but living as servants of God.17 Honor everyone. Love thebrotherhood. Fear God. Honor theemperor.18 Servants, be subject to your masterswith all respect, not only to the goodand gentle but also to the unjust. 19 Forthis is a gracious thing, when, mindfulof God, one endures sorrows whilesuffering unjustly. 20 For what credit isit if, when you sin and are beaten for it,you endure? But if when you do goodand suffer for it you endure, this is agracious thing in the sight of God.
1 John 3:1-3 Children of God3 See what kind of love the Father hasgiven to us, that we should be calledchildren of God; and so we are. Thereason why the world does not know usis that it did not know him.2Beloved, we are Gods childrennow, and what we will be has not yetappeared; but we know that when heappears we shall be like him, becausewe shall see him as he is. 3 Andeveryone who thus hopes in himpurifies himself as he is pure.
John 16:16-22Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy16 ―A little while, and you will see meno longer; and again a little while, andyou will see me.‖ 17 So some of hisdisciples said to one another, ―What isthis that he says to us,‗A little while, and you will not see me, and again alittle while, and you will see me‘;and,‗because I am going to theFather‘?‖ 18 So they were saying,―What does he mean by ‗a little while‘?We do not know what he is talkingabout.‖ 19 Jesus knew that they wantedto ask him, so he said to them, ―Is thiswhat you are asking yourselves, what Imeant by saying, ‗A little while and youwill not see me, and again a little whileand you will see me‘? 20 Truly, truly, Isay to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will besorrowful, but your sorrow will turninto joy. 21 When a woman is givingbirth, she has sorrow because her hourhas come, but when she has deliveredthe baby, she no longer remembers theanguish, for joy that a human being hasbeen born into the world. 22 So alsoyou have sorrow now, but I will see youagain, and your hearts will rejoice, andno one will take your joy from you.
Psalm 147:1-11He Heals the Brokenhearted147 Praise the LORD!For it is good to sing praises to ourGod;for it is pleasant, and a song of praiseis fitting.2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem;he gathers the outcasts of Israel.3 He heals the brokenheartedand binds up their wounds.4 He determines the number of thestars;he gives to all of them their names.5 Great is our Lord, and abundant inpower;his understanding is beyondmeasure.6 The LORD lifts up the humble;he casts the wicked to the ground.7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving;make melody to our God on the lyre!8 He covers the heavens with clouds;he prepares rain for the earth;he makes grass grow on the hills.9 He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry.10 His delight is not in the strength ofthe horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,11 but the LORD takes pleasure inthose who fear him,in those who hope in his steadfastlove.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Jubilate)Isaiah 40:25–31 or Lamentations 3:22–331 Peter 2:11–20 or 1 John 3:1–3John 16:16–22Those Who Wait on the Lord Shall RejoiceThe people of God are pilgrims and sojourners in this world, looking ahead to a destinationyet to come (1 Peter 2:11–20). Though we are now children of God, the fullness of whatwe shall be has not yet been revealed (1 John 3:1–3). We are those who wait on the Lord.―The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him‖ (Lam. 3:25). Jesustells us that the wait is just a little while. ―A little while, and you will see me no longer; andagain a little while, and you will see me‖ (John 16:16). Though you must experiencesorrow for a time, though you must live as strangers in a world that is at enmity withChrist, yet your sorrow will be turned to joy when He returns. ―But they who wait for theLord shall renew their strength‖ (Is. 40:31). The little while of weeping shall be replacedwith an eternity of rejoicing in the presence of Christ the crucified and risen Savior. ―Andno one will take your joy from you‖ (John 16:22).
