Authentic task
Physical education
Physical wellness and recreation (grade 9)
This authentic task will take one week
In this unit, you will:
 Research information from various sources for different types of outdoor
recreational activity
 Assess your physical wellness
 Set goals for improvement of physical fitness
 Plan and implement a physical fitness programme
 Do warm –up activities and cool- down activities
For learners to assess their own physical wellness learners must have sufficient
knowledge in all aspects of physical fitness programme and testing procedures. The
following information is of vital importance to learners in order to perform
tests/activities that will address specific components of health /motor related fitness to
improve the different parts and functions of the body. Skills relating to these
components are important for exercise programme, games, sports and outdoor
recreational activities. The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of and
participate in activities that promote movement and physical development.
Activity 1
 In groups of 6 learners they visit the local library or other resources centres
 They will compile a list of adventurous recreational outdoor activities that are
suitable to the South African climatic and natural geographical conditions.
 Briefly describe each activity
Guidelines for learners:
 Your account must include
 Name of activity, place and time- seasonal or throughout the year
 Description of the activity
 Fitness level required for the activity

Activity 2
 Learners will work in pairs to the illustrations of physical fitness.
 They will select one example from each of the set of techniques (select a
different technique from the one you have chosen for self- evaluation).
 Practice each skill/technique with the assistance of your partner. (Use the
illustration and execution guidelines to assist you to improve your
performance.
 Evaluate your partner’s performance while your partner evaluates your
performance.
 Use the 10 point scale according to the execution guideline to evaluate your
performance.

Activity 3
They will do a project in groups of 6 based on the work that already done.
Project: Planning and presenting a recreational programme for an outdoor
activity.
Plan a recreational programme for themselves
 Use the following guidelines to prepare the questionnaire to identify needs,
problems and interests for recreation.
 The objective of the questionnaire should be to find out which recreational
activity you would like to participate in but have not done so as yet and
also to find out the reasons for not starting the activity.
Your questionnaire must determine: {guidelines}
 The activity you are presently involved in
 The benefits of the present activity

 The possible future recreational activity and programme which will satisfy
your needs and interests.
 Set goals for your recreational programme, e.g. socializing/ team building/
strengthening racial interaction/ improving fitness level and environmental
education. And then they will present it to your class.

Activity 4
Guidelines
Learners will work individual to design a sequence of movements using all three
techniques using all three techniques (rotation/elevation and balance)
Then they will combine the sequence with dance movements and music.
Practice their sequence on your own and then work in your group.
Each group will present its sequence to the class.
A peer group will assess your performance with the help of the following
7point rating scale.
7 outstanding achievement
6 meritorious achievement
5 substantial achievement
4 adequate achievement
2 elementary achievement
1 not achieved
(10 marks)

To conclude the lesson:
Activity 5
I will ask the learners to create their own cool down.
Learners will do cool down activities and ask some of questions based on the
previous activities it is extremely important to cool down after a period of intense
activity. They will complete the following cooling down activities.
