3. CAT
β’ The scientific name Felis catus was
proposed by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 that
belongs to the Felidae (feline) family.
β’ They are the smallest member of the
feline family.
β’ The behavioral psychologist Edward
Thorndike cat-based learning
expereiment in the late 1800s.
4. CHARACTERISTICS
β’ The domestic cat has a smaller skull and shorter bones.
β’ It about 46 cm (18 in) in head-to-body length and 23β25 cm (9β10 in) in height, with
30 cm (12 in) long tails.
β’ Males are larger than females.
β’ Adult domestic cats weigh between 4 and 5 kg (9 and 11 lb).
β’ The cat has a highly developed nictitating membrane.
β’ In cats, morphine produces excitation of the CNS.
6. LIFESPAN
β’ In the 1980s, its about seven years,
rising to 9.4 years in 1995 and then 15
years in 2021.
β’ Some cats have been reported as
surviving into their 30s, with the oldest
known cat, Creme Puff, dying at a
verified age of 38.
β’ The average birth weight of a domestic
cat is 3 ounces.
7. EXPERIMENTAL USE
β’ The study of drugs affecting blood
pressure.
β’ Anesthetized and spinal preparations are
used for the assay of catecholamines.
β’ Contractions of the nictitating membrane
are recorded for the investigation of
ganglionic blocking action of the drugs.
β’ Cats are excellent animal model for
diseases such as leukemia, Alzheimer's
disease, heart disease, infection, and
immunodeficiency.
8. DIET AND HEALTH
β’ Cats are carnivores.
β’ Mostly animal flesh is their diet,
and they have a stomach capable
of digesting raw meat.
β’ Their is the occasional hunting
activities of the cat to support their
diet, is typically dependent on
their human owners.
9. HOUSING
β’ Caging Design and Operating Procedures
β’ Animal Care Staff
Animal care staff working with cats and be willing to interact with them to assure socialization
and tractability.
β’ Feline Social Behavior
As natural predators, cats possess keen senses and heightened fight-or-flight responses, making
them particularly susceptible to environmental stress
β’ Housing to Exclude Pathogens
β’ Environmental Enrichment
