2. Why I picked this show
and scene:
Has been my favourite show ever since it was
released 4 years ago
Season 6 is already in the filming process
This scene uses many camera angles and shots to
clearly show emotion
I believe that the Mise-en-scene, camera and editing
is a main contribute to why this scene is so emotional.
3. Mise-en-scene
Man in handcuffs — prisoner? is he guilty?
Death sentence — the gun
Soldiers — very official
Girl crying — partner of prisoner
Dark weather and rain — complements mood of scene
Forest vs Wasteland — suggests possible apocalypse
Spaceship-like structure — set in the future
Uniformed vs normal clothes show importance
Blood splatter and water splash create impact
4. Extreme Long shot of
Arkadia:
- Gives us an idea of the
setting of the piece
- Set in the future
- Shapes on the ground are
possibly dead bodies
- Tree in front of shot gives
the impression of it being
hidden in the forest
Camera:
5. Close-up of Puddle then Tilt
to Mid Shot of guards and
prisoner:
- Reflection shows power but
also mystery into who is the
prisoner
- Shows emotions and gives
an idea of the costumes
showing status
- It’s our first glimpse of the
handcuffs so we get an
initial idea of who they are
6. Low Mid shot of Octavia:
- Gives connotations of
hiding
- Trying to see
something
- We can see her
desperations in her
face to see Lincoln
- Military kind of crawl
7. Long/Over shoulder shot:
- First look at Pike in this scene
- Show’s Pike’s power over
Lincoln
- It’s like looking in the mirror
(race, bald, similar style
clothing) but one is clearly in
handcuffs
- Potentially shows what each
other want to be (one wants the
power of the other while the
other wants his people to
respect him)
- Building behind looks like a
futuristic prison
8. Two Close-Up Shots:
- Confrontation moment
between the two men
- Emphasis on the mirror
- Shows power vs
weakness
- Lincoln looks away
(disgust for Pike or
thoughts about Octavia?)
9. Wide shot:
- Shows the clear
confrontation in the
scene between the two
men (circled)
10. Close-Up to POV shot:
- We get to see her
emotion and reaction
- We then get to see what
she is reacting to from
her eyes
11. Extreme Close-up of Lincoln’s
Knees:
- Could connote surrender or
praying for forgiveness
- Shows darkness of puddle
and the rain
- You can still see his
restraints which could
connote that he accepts his
fate of death
12. Tilts up to a close up of his
face:
- Could show acceptance
of his face?
- Regret for what he did?
- Worry for his girlfriend?
- Drip on his face could be
rain or could represent
the tears he may be
holding back for his
girlfriend
13. Alternating Mid Shots of
Octavia and Lincoln:
- We see Octavia’s
emotions change
- Camera tracks around
Lincoln to emphasise that
he is on his own with no
protection
14. Mid shot track around Pike:
- Emphasises Pike’s power
- You can see the soldiers
behind him as his protection
- Ends on Lincoln’s last eye
contact and line towards his
enemy
15. Close up of Lincoln:
- Looks up as if to look
either to heaven or to look
to the sky for his girlfriend
as he knows she is
worrying for him
Mid Shot of Octavia:
- See her full emotion as
she realises that he’s
looking for her as he’s
going to die
16. Extreme Close Up of Gun:
- Camera tilts with the gun
almost like our eyeliner
would if we were there so is
a slight POV of a soldier
potentially
- Emphasises the method of
death
- Emphasised the impact of a
small weapon
17. Alternate Close Up and Mid Shots:
- You can now see the gun near Lincoln’s head
(composition of the shot) (circled)
- We can see Octavia before Lincoln’s last
words as she sees the gun now
- She’s being held back from doing anything
- “May we meet again” is a recurring saying in
the show so is symbolistic of death and love
- This acts as an almost ‘last contact’ before his
death but is a message to Octavia
- We then see the last shot of Pike before
Lincoln’s death with the focus of the shot on
Pike rather than the gun
- Therefore the filmmakers could want us to see
how he seems to have no emotion despite
having to kill someone
18. Octavia’s Wide POV and
then her Close-Up reaction:
- We can now see exactly
what she had to witness
- We can see the blood
splatter as he is shot
(circled)
- We then get her reaction
to what we just saw
through her eyes
- We can even see the
shock of Kane (man
behind her) even though
the camera focus is not on
him
19. Close-Up of Lincoln collapsing:
- We can see where the bullet
entered/exited his head
- He is still looking to the sky
which could connote his
ascent to heaven or his
remaining contact with
Octavia
- Blood splatter is an extra
detail but adds to the realism
of the scene, especially as it
leaves the camera focus and
into the background
20. Bird’s Eye View / High
Angle Shot:
- We can see all of the
detail of the gun, the
blood and the puddle
- The reflection in the
puddle is back and is
a contrast to when he
was standing in the
reflection as he is now
at his weakest
- Adds to the detail of
the slow motion
21. Low Angle Shot:
- Splashes create an
impact as we see both
the puddle splash and
the blood splash out
from the bullet hole as
he impacts the ground
- Makes Pike look
superior in the
background
- Makes the audience
feel inferior and weak
like Lincoln as we are
down low
22. Bird’s Eye View / High Angle
Shot:
- We can still see Pike with the
gun
- Lincoln completely collapsed
and blood mixing with the
puddle
- He’s still handcuffed (always
a prisoner)
- Still looking at the sky (same
connotations as explained
earlier)
23. Mid shot of Octavia:
- We can clearly see
her emotional impact
- She immediately
changes from sad to
angry/wanting
revenge
- We can still see her
being held back which
could also connote her
holding back her
anger and emotions
as well as her physical
being
24. POV and Close-Ups:
- We get to see Octavia’s final
POV and we can’t see
Lincoln
- Development of anger
towards Pike
- We get a Close-Up of who
her anger is targeted
towards
- Pike looks like he has no
remorse for what he has just
done
25. Final Bird’s Eye View/High
Angle Shot:
- We see Lincoln one last
time with more blood
spreading into the puddle
- The gun is still turned
towards him (circled)
- Handcuffs are a key focus
in this shot which connotes
that him and his people will
never be free
- Camera zooms out before
going to black which
signifies the end of the
scene and the end of
Lincoln’s life
26. Editing:
Clever in the way that we switched between the events of the
scene and Octavia’s POV
Fan’s of the 100’s emotions match Octavia’s in her development
Cutting between Octavia and Lincoln establishes a connection
between the two so we feel more sorry for Octavia when Lincoln
dies
Gun motif throughout
Lyrics in the music line up with the action e.g. Lincoln kneels on
the lyrics “Stand down”
