The Viking Vision program establishes a positive learning environment through modeling, reinforcing, and rewarding good behaviors. It focuses on lessons teaching students to be respectful, responsible, and safe. Teachers model positive behaviors, reinforce them with commercials and posters, and reward students with privileges and prizes to help students feel safe at school.

If you have one full time community manager for social media on your campus, you're lucky! For most, creating content for Twitter and Facebook is usually an add on to a staff member’s already full plate. And as we all work hard to create engaging content and be responsive, we sometimes have to take on weekend work to tackle that irate Saturday afternoon post. Because if you ignore it until Monday morning, it is too late or perhaps will, by then, turn into a volatile situation! For most, the model of stretching current staff to manage social media won't work for the long haul. Absent funding for more positions, what do you do? Enter the secret sauce. Students. The key is to harness their eagerness and stories so you wind up with authentic content and real time interactions. But, how? Times have changed and our PE programs must keep pace. For years the main focus of Physical Education was on teaching team sports and concentrating on athletic performance. Lack of relevant curriculum has left PE programs to be viewed as expendable because they have been considered a glorified recess. The technology influences of the 21st century have left us with high tech couch potatoes. Children today are developing adult illness at an alarming rate. School PE programs can be effective in increasing the health and wellness of students through physical activity and education. The New PE promotes an individualized, developmentally appropriate, meaningful curriculum that integrates academic subjects into activities to give students the knowledge needed for a lifetime of wellness.

"The vast majority of our students enter our schools in kindergarten with high motivation to learn but as they progress up through the grades, motivation and engagement tends to fade. Due to the many challenges facing our schools, educators often resort to a variety of incentives to try to motivate students to learn and behave to help create the optimal learning environment. This session will challenge participants to rethink the use of incentives and encourage them to look at ways to create the conditions for students to motivate themselves. The following will be discussed: the long term issues that can be caused by incentives/rewards ideas to create the conditions for long term (more intrinsic) motivation how short term punishments can create further behaviour problems with students how behaviour is often a result of an unmet need or lagging skill Participants will be challenged reflect upon their current views of student motivation and come away with ideas and strategies to move toward more intrinsic motivation in their classrooms and schools."
