ADSL is:
■ Asymmetric, because data transmission is faster
downstream to the subscriber than upstream from the
subscriber,
■ Digital, because even voice and video are digitized before
they are transmitted as modulated analogue representations of
digital data,
■ Subscriber Line, because data is carried over a single
twisted pair copper ‘loop’ to the subscribers premises.

ADSL Performance
■ The greater the line length, the greater the attenuation.
■ Crosstalk from other wires in the same bundle, for instance
other T1 lines, depending on their relative position;
■ RF interference from AM radio, amateur radio bands, and
Interference from other sources.
ADSL cannot be
transmitted on a line with
load coils or Digital
Loop Carriers(DLCs).

DMT modulation
■ DMT splits the frequency band used into multiple sub-carriers
(bins).
■ Capture from DMT tool - Signal susceptible to noise

How much bandwidth is enough?
■ By 2015 it will be 50Mbps and 2020 it will be 100Mbps1
■ VDSL2 had the potential to reach 100 Mbps. But noise among
the lines in a cable reduced performance.
■ VDSL2 Vectoring is noise-canceling technology.

■ It works a lot like noise-canceling headphones. It cuts out all
of the noise, or interference, among the VDSL2 lines in a bundle.
■ Alcatel-Lucent ISAM (Intelligent Services Access Manager)
Series are capable of vectoring and pair-bonding.

Future Proofing Broadband Network Infrastructure1
For an architectural framework for broadband service delivery,
regardless of what the access option is—copper, fiber, or wireless.
The key elements are always the same:
-Network termination ((residential gateway (RG), ONT,
-base transceiver station (BTS)) at the customer side
- First node for last mile drop (access node, aggregation switch)
-First IP edge ((Broadband Remote Access Server (B-RAS),
-Broadcast Network Gateway (BNG))
